Lake Speed grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, the son of a popular businessman and one-term mayor of the city. Introduced to Go-Karts at a young age, Lake took his first steps in a lifetime of racing, a career that first saw him chase the dream of a World Karting Association world championship. Once he reached that impossible goal, Lake began seeking out a new challenge. He found it in NASCAR, but not before facing one of the most bizarre finishes in motorsports history at the end of the 1980 ARCA race at Daytona.

Big Lake Speed fan here in Kingsport, Tenn. Always wanted to go visit his shop when he ran his own team. Actually called his shop once to ask if they allowed people to visit. Lo and behold, none other than Lake himself answered the phone. He talked a good 30 minutes to me and told me to call when I decided to come to make sure he would be there. Never got to go and have regretted it ever since. Lake has a great Christian testimony also. One of the main reasons I started pulling for him.

I will never forget witnessing Lake break down the turn 1 wall at the Pocono 500. He is as tough as he is intelligent and has passed on all of his attributes to his son. Thanks for posting this interview, I am an old fan and enjoyed every moment. This may explain all the ancient Wynn's Oil Treatment stickers on my tool boxes 😆

I met Lake twice at the Ford headquarters in Dearborn, Mi. All the Ford drivers would have an autograph session the Thursday before the August race at Michigan International Speedway.. I digress, Lake was the nicest person and gladly chatted with fans as they got autographs and pictures. Oh and he has a really cool signature too...
