Outstanding segment by Campbell on scenery. Took a lot of the mystery out of the process. Great for beginners to the ease of doing scenery.

The TCS throttle is no different then running JMRI Engine Driver off of an Android Phone/Tablet. Everything he showed can be done in that app too, since the TCS throttle is using that program as its base. Granted nothing beats having a real physical button to push when running trains, but your phone in your pocket is also a throttle (as long as the layout is running a JMRI server on the WiFi or using a Digitrax LNWI).

A few N scale scenery suggestions: 1. Tan colored paint will work well for some parts of the country ( "out west maybe), but not all. Check local soils. Browns are better for some areas - say the midwest. Least we forget the red clays of the south and other areas. 2. Unfortunately, working with N scale ballast is much more demanding. Tapping the tops of the rails, regrettably, does not work well. You may find that careful sculpting, almost on an individual tie basis, is desirable. Use a "scale eye" to carefully sculpt. Also, monitor the track as it dries. Applying the glue in the manner shown will have very bad effects in the smaller scales. Try smaller drops. Add ballast as it dries to recover effects from glueing. 3. Static grass falls nearly everywhere you don't want it to go in the small scales. You may find it necessary to mask anywhere you don't want it to go: track, roads, structures, etc.
@trainencounters586
@trainencounters586 3 жыл бұрын
Also, Its not required to use ModgePodge as the adhesive for your static grass. Elmers Glue, specifically Elmers School Glue: as it forms less of a "skin" during drying, works well also. Use either adhesive if you want a thick "lawn" of grass. For a more sparse look, try using Aquanet unscented hair spray. Also, use Aquanet as a final spray to "seal" the area upon your final application of grass. You may want to try multiple passes over a smaller area as well, depending on the look you want, sealing with hair spray after each pass. If its your first time, try things out on a scrap piece of foam first using different techniques. Moreover, this is a nice video and is a great introduction to scenery. Thank you for all your efforts.

Great tutorial Mr. Rice on basic scenery techniques. Have 1 question though. What size static grass would you use for N scale track and surrounding areas ? 6mm seems a little big or do you mix size for smaller scales ? Thanks and keep the tutorials coming.

For the cork roadbed I would use silicone sealant since the wood glue dries hard and transmits noise. The silicone remains pliable and acts like a sound insulator.

Great tutorial, explained to be easily understood, I’m getting back in after about 40+ yrs. I have a question pertaining to the plywood, how thick do you recommend? Working with daughter and granddaughter we plan to build a modular layout, four 2’ x 4’ sections. This will make it easier to get out of basement when time to pass it to them. Thanks, Bill Corrinne

See I always hate how I do just cork road bed but cutting and grading the foam it sits on Is something I’ve tried and did pretty rough at. I’ve even got to the point with my yards just using plywood as an overall roadbed but it feels like I’m not doing it how I know I should

Great video, thank you. I don't know much about the styrofoam that you use, however in the UK most foams are not fire retardant and can give off noxious and toxic fumes in event of a fire. So I tend to seal the foam with a commercial mix of plaster and PVA glue (a version of Artex that contains small pieces of grit to add texture). This provides a fire retardant seal over the foam and can also be used to create extra "lumps & bumps" in the ground to make it more realistic. I then use a various mixes of brown and yellow paint to create a base soil or rock look. What do you do in the USA to protect your layout from any fire risks?
@wheelslip
@wheelslip 3 жыл бұрын
Keep the lighters away. Honestly I have never given it a thought. I don't suppose it would be that much of a risk as if I'm not running the train there is no power around it.

That was a great scenery segment. I did have a question, how did the foam Not be affected by the spray paint? What was used, or was it just light over spray?

Im not directly spraying onto the foam just hitting the track but that very light amount I have never had an issue with the foam.

How do you properly weather concrete railroad ties?

I would try uing the same method with pan pastels. The hard part with concrete ties is weathering the rail. Pretty much has to be done by hand.

Great video but why do you have to use cork if you cut the foam for the track. Thank you newbie.
@wheelslip
@wheelslip 3 жыл бұрын
If you look at the real track you can see there is a roadbed under the ties and then it spreads out to the raised sub roadbed. I only use the cork on my mainline. The sidings and branch lines are directly on the foam.
