I am a fairly competent piano player but I've never taken the time to sort this bit by bit. The embarrassing thing is that I taught elementary band for decades and did this type of teaching daily. Your methodical instruction had me playing this in less than an hour. Thank you so much!

Hay Steve, Thanks for your viedos!......Extremly helpful to someone like me. Im taking up piano again at 65, and loving it!....with your help…. I took piano lessons when I was 8 years old, but the Catholic nuns hit me with a ruler (“on the fingers”) when I made a mistake!....they meant well back then so I told my mom I wanted to play drums….lessons and years later I played in high school band and a wedding band from 1970 to 1985….I supported my family with the money and the car knew its way home back then…..I thank my angels watching over me. …….So at this point I have great people like yourself putting teaching out there that mean so much…..Please keep up the good work and thank you! You’re the Balls man!…….. Mark McDonough, Dunstable, MA

This is what is called in music a "suite" (see CSN&Y "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, and The Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations"), and Billy himself has said that he was inspired to write this by hearing the "Medley" on the B-side of the Beatles' Abbey Road album.

I don’t know why, but this style of tutorial REALLY works for me. I haven’t played for 30 yrs and I’m getting back into it with piano man. I found somebody else doing this style of teaching. So I’m using hers and yours to learn piano man. When I’m reasonably competent on that, I’m going to wear out this vid on Italian restaurant. Possibly the best song ever written and performed. Your teaching style makes me think I can play this. Thank you for the effort you’ve put into this. As arnie says, I’ll be back 🤘

Subbed! Haven't played piano since 2004 or 2005, still at Beginner Level; but I used to play tunes by ear, but not chords. I haven't touched a piano key for several years (except when I clean my keyboard, a Yamaha Portable Grand DGX-300). I get the desire to play every so often, but I just don't. And yes, I did love to learn playing side by side with the MIDI songs. I'll probably get back into it sometime in the future. Anyways, good day to you, Sir!

billyjoel7 Cheers Steve. Incidentally there's a special online treat available for BJ geeks like us. If you do a YT search for "Billy Joel - Scenes From An Italian Restaurant Piano Track" you'll find a user called campbellboy14 who has uploaded Billy's piano track from the album version in isolation. It's kinda grainy in sound quality, but you can clearly hear all the magnificent details and stunning voicings Billy played on the record. The voicings of the Cmaj7 Fmaj7 Bbmaj7 bit are particularly delicious under the fingers! It's a great way to study this piece more closely if you're interested. Just another thought too : It's also possible to play the opening "bottle o red" melody in 6ths with the right hand. It takes a bit of practice, but it's doable. As you mention, Billy never moves his left hand up for that line in any performances. I think that's coz he plays it all in the right hand. I suspect the left hand move was written into the sheet music at some point coz I've seen other players do it that way. But it feels great in the right hand once you get the hang of it. I hope you find this interesting. You did a great job with your tutorial. A 3 hour marathon! Awesome. Thanks for posting. Greg

I think with everything that's going on in the world (france) in particular this would be particularly relevant.
