If I had to recommend just one thing to do, it would be to drive to Milford Sound and go out on a boat to the open ocean. It is a worldclass drive and going through the sound on a boat is a otherworldy experience, and I recommend anyone who goes to New Zealand experiences this.

@@ScenicRelaxationFilms that's good!❤ at this point & time my favourite places are my faves because of family & memories e.g. Tokoroa, where I was born, my ancestral river where my father was raised at the end of Wi Duncan Rd in Dannevirke where he took us eeling & fishing, he could tickle trout, Kawhia where we'd go horse-riding, Waimarama beach, Mahia. Its a special place & I was fortunate to have been born there. I get emotional thinking of home & family, my ancestors who were so connected to the land & sea & the part nature played in my upbringing, we were so blessed. I'm from the North Island, my father was a bushman & did a lot of hunting & would have seen so much of our country. I worked in the lower South Island for a little while, it's so beautiful down there, I felt close to God in those beautiful surroundings..by the looks of things you've seen way more of my country than I have & you've allowed the world to see its beauty, I love that you love it! @@mercuraz I have to agree. The North is already beautiful enough from the rolling hills in the Waikato to the volcanic beaches and lone mountains of Egmont and Ruapehu. The black sand beaches of the west coast and the golden sands of the east- then you cross Cook Strait ideally on a late afternoon ferry and have a quiet, cold beer on the deck as you watch the sun slowly set. You arrive in Picton for a fresh-caught fish and chips dinner your adventures in the South Island have just begun. Marlborough, Tasman, Nelson, The West Coast, Canterbury and Christchurch, Wanaka and Otago, Fiordland and the deep south. I have yet to see all of the magnificent vistas my country has on offer yet part of the joy is knowing there is yet more to see.

My husband and I are semi-retired and are currently taking a couple of years out travelling around NZ in our caravan. We have just returned to the top of the South Island after travelling (and some working) the West coast, Lakes/Central Otago and the Southern coast for four months. We are now spending the coldest months in Nelson/Golden Bay before heading back down the island to explore the East coast and central South Island. Next year we are travelling around the North Island. I've seen many of these places at ground level. It is so nice now to see them from the sky.

As a New Zealander, i often complain about our lack of wild life and animals like in Africa... but always appreciate that not a single Animal will harm you in New Zealand. It has to be the safest place on earth for outdoor activities. Even the oceans and rivers are full of Fish that won't harm you.
