Might have been mentioned already, but a lot of the weird team names do have meanings behind them. Examples include: The Red Sox/White Sox were named by sports writers based on their uniforms. The 76ers were named for the year the Declaration of Independence was signed (in Philadelphia) The 49ers were named for the year the California Gold Rush began The Blue Jackets were named for a nickname of an army division from Ohio during the Us Civil War The Flames (which dates back to when they were in Atlanta) were named for the Great Atlanta Fire back at the end of the US civil War

The reason it was New York Giants for football and baseball is because it is traditional in Europe to have a “club” operate across multiple sports. For example, when someone says Bayern Munich, you assume the soccer team but they also have a basketball and handball team of the same name. They also have supported chess, bowling and table tennis.

My hot take for the Leafs this season is that with Matthews being the new captain, and with his rep for being a Selke candidate, the new coach leans heavily on Matthews in critical defensive moments, and Matthews crumbles beneath the weight. I have a feeling Matthews has a less than spectacular season coming up.
@liltiger32 ай бұрын
Leafs fans love blue collar teams because historically those have been our most successful ones. Despite the franchises age there is a dearth of real “generationally” talented players. Montreal has a murderers row of HOFers, Boston has a history of elite Norris calibre defensemen like Orr, Borque, Chara. Edmonton had Gretzky, Kurri, Messier, McDavid, Draisaitl. Pittsburgh Lemieux, Jagr, Crosby, Malkin. Buffalo has had the French Connection, Vancouver the Sedins, Islanders the likes of Trottier and Bossy. You get the gist. The Leafs best or most skilled players were either pre-1967 where things like highlights and people who watched are just lacking, and since then they had guys who were great, but were either just a step below the truly elite (Salming, Sittler, Sundin, Cujo) or who’s primes weren’t long enough to be considered among the best (Gilmour). Not to mention this franchise has loved shooting itself in the foot historically and screwing themselves out of truly elite talent, like failing to recognize Bobby Orr who was in their own backyard, or trading away draft picks who became HOFers like Lindros/Niedermayer or Luongo. Anyway, when this team went “deep” in the playoffs (Semifinals and no further) those teams were dragged there by blue collar, lunch pail guys. Gilmour, Clark, Roberts, Tucker, etc. All highly skilled, but they also played physically. This era of Leafs is uncharted territory for this fan base. Matthews, Marner, and Nylander are the most skilled forwards this franchise has ever had, and by the end of their careers should they stay will be atop the leaderboards of scoring stats. All three could be HOF just by breaking the 1000 point threshold. Tavares potentially too for that matter. And yet they’ve tasted zero real success. No playoff success, no real regular season success (No Presidents Trophy or Divisional crown). They make the playoffs, play like they’re scared or they lack heart, and then they lose. The losing hurts a ton, but because the way they play is the antithesis to how this franchise has played when they were successful, it makes people dislike this core a lot more. The perceived overpayments also don’t help.

The vast majority of people that were saying “Oh, Stützle wants out” were not Sens fans lol. Most of it was coming from other markets/fan bases just to get jabs at the team/fans. And Stützle went with Lemieux since he represents Seider (another German) as well as other European NHL players. Apparently Seider already has some endorsement deals in Germany, so Stützle probably wants a piece of that.

the problem with the leafs, despite what everyone keeps telling you about 'running it back', is that there is too much player turnover. every 2 years they have a different goalie, completely different defence, half the forwards are gonezo. nobody knows, or likes or plays for each other on the team. most perennially successful teams change like 3 guys every off season...but toronto's top 3 forwards are so good they continue to carry them anyway. it's also been super embarrassing seeing supposed leafs fans more concerned with keeping robertson, a guy who can barely tie his own skates, instead of mitch marner who's been the best player on the team half the years he's been here. do you actually want to win? wakey wakey.
