Excellent seamanship and beautiful example of ship handling in a difficult situation, well done to that skipper.

When I was a kid of about eight years old, I used to go on there with my younger brother. The green and white tower used to be just a metal structure, similar to what you would put a water tank on. We climbed on the structure one time, while the tide was coming in. The waves were doing the same as shown in this video, but, actually a little more. We were too scared to come down from the structure, until we had figured out a pattern of the waves, and made a run for it. That was around 1950-51. We lived about an hour walk from there.

Lots of comments here by people who do not know the first thing about seamanship. That was excellent work by the skipper. Because of the very strong crosswind he had to crab across well to windward dosing the speed to get the right angle of approach. When he realised first time round that the wind would carry him too close to the leeward harbour wall he reacted in plenty of time to go round and do it again. A lesser sailor might have tried to brave it out. The tugs were placed as a safety measure to keep him off the leeward wall if needs be. They would have been ineffectual farther out.

I think the 1st approach was a try-out to check who the ship behaves in the current/wind combination

Watching the Tugs do their work at the end was almost worth listening to that awful music along the way. The Skipper of the ship did a great job getting a good final on the breakwater. That takes a lot of knowledge of wind water and patience to work with what you've been dealt. Bravo on all parts. Good video , bad music worth watching all in.

This is a fisherman entering his home port. ( I confess to a little surprise about his first appoach, but than I am only a simple yachtsman.) No danger for pedestrians on the pier, its only a stiff breeze (I guess 5 or 6 Bft'. If it becomes dangerous the pier will be closed. What really surprises me is the abuse some people see fit to use.

That ship is very ‘sea kind’ dealing with seas extremely well, not rolling like a ‘pig’. The colours in the scene are very beautiful. The music is awful… totally irrelevant to seafaring. But the vessel is a real beauty.

It seems like the discussion is more about the behaviour of the people on the pier than of the seamanship of the captain. As far as the people on the pier goes, it shows that the fact that you are Dutch doesn't mean that you know how to behave near the sea. It is very clear that their ignorance put them into a very big risk of being swept away by the waves. As far as the captain goes, I was puzzled by the fact that he made an "extra round" before heading for port. I can only understand it so that he was waiting for the tugboats to reach the meeting point timely.

The rule "red to right returning" does not apply at this harbor - and others in the world. Its red marker is on the left. It would seem the world navigation communities could keep to a single standard and avoid possible disasters - but no. Keep this in mind when responsible for seamanship in non US waters, and check charts worldwide before entering any harbor.

Leerzame manoevre.

Those people are locals and their behaviour is normal, they know when it's not safe any more. In the US a pier like this would be closed (if it would be open to public anyway) in these weather conditions to prevent claims. These people are locals and Dutch and we're used to take our own responsibility......

MrGentle... Doesn't know what he's talking about, probably American, not used to take responsibility, always blame someone els. Nothing special to walk there under these conditions

@MrRCGNL7 жыл бұрын
Americans are not used to take their responsibility, not in their work, not in their private life. That's why there is such a f... claim culture: Always blame someone else. Dutch kids are learned to take responsibility for their own behaviour from their childhood. In addition to that, those living near the sea, learn to handle the sea. That's why Dutch children are the happiest children in the world. As was concluded by a US and UK Professors .....
