For city dwellers like me, this could easily be two bikes in one. All-electric mode for the daily commute, hybrid sport mode for the weekend rides. Hopefully future hybrid bikes will look a little better-proportioned and regain left-foot shift levers so we can at least pretend it's a normal motorcycle transmission with a quickshifter.

@@ALIENdrifter66 my car is plug-in hybrid. I think it's the best of both worlds. I don't think the goal is to eliminate gas, I think the goal is to just reduce our need for it as much as we can. With the PHEV, you can cover most of your daily errands with zero gas whatsoever, but then when you need to go further, you can just go... They also only use a small battery so it's more earth friendly there too once the car is dead. Obviously if you live 50 miles from your workplace, this might not be the tech for you... If they could make decent phev bikes... that could be fun!

Bravery from Kawasaki, relentless effort towards motorcycle community, well done! Yet another great review from this amazing KZbinr, thanks! It semms like 2 points needs to be perfected: 1- Price: Perhaps, they needed to release manual gearbox which reduces price and reduces overall costs. 2-Shifter is needed, we are so used to kick that shift lever hahaha. Lets see what gen 2 is going to be like or this attemp will stop just like Bmw C1 (concept 1992 production 2000, discon 2002) Cheers!

There's been mention of a Versys-like hybrid being developed. Definitely interested to see how it will handle touring, especially if you can run it in eco and get a greatly extended range (300-400+ miles). To me, something like that makes sense for a hybrid.

This is a good start imo. The seamless switching from engine to electric is possible as the electrically assisted acceleration before the engine turns on from full stop is there. Maybe Kawasaki still hasn't added that part as it may not be seamless enough to give the rider some confidence on switching (could be proper gearing/shifting). And hopefully it's just a firmware update if they find a way on that part.

In an age of refinement not invention (eg Panigale bike engine has only ever evolved - well over a decade now) I give Congratulations to Kawasaki. There will be doubters and people bashing this bike, but the industry is tough and I applaud any manufacturer willing to put mental benchmarks down like this bike. Kawasaki aren't trying to replace your bike or claim this to be better than anything else. Look at their new H2. They are innovators. Yeah it's crazy expensive. It's a whole new market they've opened up, rattling the cage of other manufacturers to say wake the fuck up, we can sling out zx10, H2, 125, tourers and strong hybrids and soon , hydrogen.

Well said. I'm sure Kawasaki knows this isn't going to be a sales leader, especially in the United States, and yes it is heavy and complicated. But this is a bike for people who either live in city centers with emissions restrictions (not me) or are interested in new tech and unique bikes (definitely me). Also while the price currently is high there's no doubt that here in the states there will be heavy discounts on this bike over the winter, as I'll be surprised if they sell more than a handful. At that point I'll buy one and add it to my list of quirky bikes lol. I do wonder on the longevity of that relatively little 48 volt battery running through endless cycles of charging and recharging with it being air cooled. I suppose a battery of that size (seems like around 1.4kw) could be built fairly easily as long as you take the electronics/bms/etc off of the old pack and replace the cells. I was surprised that the bike allowed you to access the eboost as much as it did though, so maybe the thermal management is better than thought.

It looks like a very good commuter bike, or at least it could to be. Acceptable performance on freeways, and in or around cities where the traffic becomes dense, switch to electric and avoid the heat and noise from the engine (and that awful sound, sounds like a lawnmower). Probably will have some teething issues and the fact you cannot change modes while riding is annoying, but it does have potential. Later they should also make a Versys style version of it.

Having to come to a full stop to switch in and out of full electric mode is really a poor design. I guess it's ok if you spend a long time in a city (but then I guess the battery range must not be very big), but you'll end up not using it when you're just crossing a town if it's only a few kilometres long, while benefitting from the noise reduction would have been great in that situation. Anyway, thanks for this honest short review.

That's actually a great point. For cars, the tire noise outweighs engine noise at moderate city speeds, so an electric or an ICU are almost the same noise level for pedestrians. But for bikes, having the option to shut off the ICU mid-ride when you're going through a habitated area should bring immense noise benefits. Tire noise is basically irrelevant in comaprison

If I was commuting from home every day (from the agglomeration with faster roads through our capital city with slow moving traffic) I would probably buy one of these. I think it would cut the fuel consumption in the city by a lot since the speeds rarely exceed 30kmh and the electric motor seemed to be able to handle that. But definitely wouldn't buy one of these for fun. :D It's more like a workhorse. But I really like the idea of hybrids. Hopefully they can improve the tech and put it in bigger bikes.

I don't like electrification on vehicles, they use it as an excuse to make them more expensive and will always be heavier weight and never same potency... If they want to advance in mobility, what we really need are hidraulic (or whatever is called) systems, that's the future and everyone knows it, they just don't want to mass introduce it already because they know we all know it is cheap, and that is a no no for them... For now, full combustion is the way to go. Nowadays engines are so clean anyways in the co2 department. Besides that, I love your vids and riding!

What are the performance numbers on this thing? I Google them and get nothing but the mpg figures and how fast it will go on battery only. All of things most riders could care less about. I guess this is just a proof of concept. Will be a hard sell in the US.

I want someone to make a bike with about the same power as a grom but in electric form (that isn't one of those underpowered Chinese e-grom clones) I love riding my ebike around town, but that's limited to around 25mph

If the bike could go at least 100 in all electric and could last for atleast 20 KM. Then you would have a winner. Make the shifting the same as with any other bike and it would be great

That’s like a hybrid corolla. Its not great but it gets the job done. Imho hybrid systems has a better future than the electrics. Its good to see hybrid bikes

I don’t think a hybrid makes much sense on a Ninja sports bike. Would think a cruiser would benefit more from a hybrid system. It would be different if the battery assisted the engine in generating more power, but it only works in hybrid mode below 40 mph. The Eliminator is half the price and gets 70 mpg cruising at 60 mph. Try to get the Kawasaki Eliminator 500 and see how it does in the twisties.

fuel-consumption definitely is not a pro-argument, indeed there's combustion only which need less. But it's the complete silence in town that's a killer feature

I would like it other way around. Roughly 35kW electric traction motor + battery for +/- 100km of autonomy and small, lets say 125cc, engine as a generator / range entender only. And please in maxi scooter format...

The parallel hybrid approach gives more of the sound and feel of a traditional motorcycle. What’s going to fry our brains is riding series hybrids where the engine is not part of the drivetrain, but just a generator for a more powerful electric motor.

This bike would be only worth it for you if: 1) you would own an apartment in some city centre where only EVs are permitted and you enjoy riding motorcycles AND 2) you're rich AF Still gotta praise the Kawasaki engineers that they atleast tried this (also they are kinda forced to due emission norms), even though the result is mediocre at best.

Just can't quite see the point ... I've got an SR/F and it does everything I need, but without any petrol whatsoever (or servicing for that matter). And much, much, *much* faster. I know it's quite a bit more expensive but it does cost a fair amount less to run (about £1 for 125 miles)
