I would strongly argue that playing or watching Days before 2 potentially ruins 2's opening. Roxas section was deliberately meant to confuse the player and have them asking questions until Sora. Playing Days first spoils the major twist of 2's opening. Days existed to retroactively tell the story of how Roxas ended up where he was in 2, not as a set up for 2. Square putting it in that order in the collection is contradictory to the way both 2 and Days were written and intended to be experienced. Roxas story in Days is hopeless because you already know how it ends. Playing it first removes the feeling of impending doom hanging over the entire game. Playing it first dramatically alters the intended tone and atmosphere of 2's opening hours. What little is gained by experiencing Days before 2 ruins a major element of the intended presentation of Roxas and his story. Days is not needed at all to understand Roxas as he factors into 2, rather complementing it by fleshing out his story. Days doesn't matter to 2, can be skipped without missing anything crucial to the plot as we knew it at the time. Days only becomes crucial thanks to 3. Days is not COM. Everything important to 2 about Days is told to the player in 2. Days came out 3 and half years after 2 and I highly doubt most players didn't understand 2's opening until that point.

The KH2 prologue works because you feel what Roxas is feeling, get discombobulated as the world starts getting weird and question when his past is brought into question. For first time players especially they start off thinking this is just an ordinary kid with strange things happening to him, and the reveals have them want to know like Roxas what is going on. That prologue makes you invested in Roxas as a character and you want him to have a happy ending. The prequel game to KH2, 358/2 Days (pronounced as 3 5 8 Days over 2) also sells the feeling as well, the missions get repetitive and you look forward to ice cream on the clock tower, just like a day at work because that is the situation for Roxas. The missions are his work and the ice cream on the clock tower is his chance to unwind and socialise with his friends, just as we get through a day at the office or in the shop so we can have a drink after work with mates.

*SPOILERS* Unpopular opinion coming up, but I think the fact that the roxas fight is so hard was the point of the battle. It's the hardest fight you have so far, because unlike fighting a thousand heartless, this time you're basically fighting yourself. You are your own worst enemy as they say. In this fight, Sora is literally trying to become whole, while Roxas is trying to survive and become somebody. This is no longer disney movie territory, this is now a full on life or death final fantasy fight. I think it's because it's so hard that the opening and ending of the game hits way harder. For the first (overly stretched) hours of the game, you were roxas. You lived his life and you shared his pain. But, then you became sora and you quickly forgot roxas. You forgot him because, basically he was a nobody compared to sora. Then, at the end, he shows up like a pokemon rival, but with elite 4 stats. So, you grinded hard to defeat him. You began to hate him. You probably even wondered why this fight is even necessary. But, after all the grinding, all the hardwork you put into defeating this mf, after that brutal fight, you did it. You ended roxas. And for me, there's just that lingering sense of regret. You wanted this. Even though you knew roxas, the nobody who had everything stripped away from him, you still did your best to defeat him. But, just like real life, you have to accept or let go of certain parts of yourself to become whole. Even if it's not now, even if it hurts like hell, you will inevitably have to confront yourself. This is why after this fight, you obtain the totally subtle keyblade of "two become one". This allows you to unlock final form, a literal representation of attaining your ultimate potential. In my opinion, sora could never defeat xemnas without first becoming whole. Just like how we can never move forward without confronting our problems. This is why it makes the kh2 ending bittersweet. Killing roxas was hard, but it was necessary to save everyone and to save yourself. But, if you're feeling sad, don't be. Because as the ending shows, sometimes the parts we change about ourselves (roxas) compliment the changes other people have gone through (namine). I know people shit on kh's story (deservingly so, looking at you kh3 and 3D), but it's because of stuff like this that I can never really say "it was all bad". And I know, the devs probably didn't think about roxas' fight this hard. They probably just wanted to add another hard boss for the final mix. But-- Yeah, I've got nothing. But, hey thanks for listening to my TED talk!
@LongSinceDead13 жыл бұрын
I don’t think that an unpopular opinion lol. The Roxas fight is usually singled out as a highlight of the game. And I agree, it makes sense both mechanically and thematically that’s he’s tough. It helps that it’s extremely well designed. He’s hard in a very fair way, once you learn his moveset and how to punish it effectively. A proper rival fight that tests your skills up to that point, like Vergil in DMC3. As you said, from a thematic standpoint it makes sense that Roxas is tough. He’s a piece of Sora that must be overcome for him to be whole. I think the main reason people have trouble with Roxas is that they’re playing on Standard mode, which doesn’t adequately prepare them for a boss that can combo you as fiercely as you can combo him.
@scizormaster66243 жыл бұрын
@@LongSinceDead1 I 100% agree. I'm of the opinion that KH2FM is at its most fun on Critical Mode, which gives you a ton of abilities right out of the starting gate and forces you to learn the mechanics of the game, while also not being unfair. On Standard, fights like Roxas and even Xaldin or Demyx are just randomly hard out of nowhere, instead of being tough yet balanced with the overall difficulty of the game
@astupidlylongnamethatstoolong3 жыл бұрын
Also to note, this fight did not exist back in KH2. It was when KH2 FM hit that they added this particular fight (+keyblade after beating roxas). The only reason why from a gameplay standpoint as to why he's hard is because he's meant to be one of the 13 extra bosses of the data fights but his moves were just pulled and place there with lowered health compared to data fight. Any first time comers will have a hard time beating him since his moves are flashy and he does the bait and switch where he circles around you for a bit. Anyone with prior knowledge to how he fights can easily figure out how to beat him up with no hassles since his reaction is ONE OF THE BEST ABUSABLE SHIT IN THE GAME WITH LIMIT FORM HOLY FUCK.

KH3 would’ve been SO much better if part of the end happened in the beginning, and the part where you rescue your allies was spread across the game instead of rushed to be done in like an hour. That was my biggest gripe. You mess around playing Disney movies for hours and hours, it’s draining, then BAM overwhelming plot and conclusion out of the blue
@bobbybelarae35593 жыл бұрын
sometimes i do wonder if the way the disney world arcs were, were a result of the kh's writing team actual decisions or if it has some influence from disney's preferences and ideas ^^; for example: the whole let it go sequence just felt more like a marketing promotional stunt from disney to me (which i guess might essentially be what it actually is). a lot of people always debate over if kh3 (or kh in general, but mostly kh3) would have been a better story if they removed the disney aspect of it but it really did feel slightly more empty compared to the previous titles where the disney worlds actually felt quite relevant and a new fresh air to explore around in. the toy story world tho in kh3 is a good example of how to still nicely incorporate the story of kh with the story of the disney series (esp since it wasnt just a total retelling of the films)

@@greendaleforever It's not the fan's fault for hyping the game. Square Enix's marketing team did that themselves by revealing the entire game, literally, and by pumping out trailer after trailer over the course of many years. You really can't blame people for hyping the game, although that's what led to the massive disappointment.
@aerostrafe10753 жыл бұрын
@@greendaleforever I also think dismissing any critiques about the game as "people overhyping" to be disingenuous. KH3 did have a plot that felt rushed in the end. I also dislike you placing blame on people with speculations and theories when the entire KH franchise is practically ripe for speculation. The teasers for the next games all hid things to make you speculate. Birth By Sleep teaser trailer literally hid who the characters were until a later trailer where you see someone who looks exactly like Roxas. That breeds speculation so to say that people are at fault for doing this to the point of overhyping themselves to run defense for this game makes you look like a douche. Sorry but it does. People have right to be hyped for things. That hype does not allow the game to be immune to having its faults called out.

I do agree. I love kh3 and it’s the one I care about the most since it was the first one that I played when it came out (I have Xbox). I know that Disney was a big reason the worlds were like that but I would have loved if the story was spread across the game. There is this one video that’s basically a fanfic and the way that they put out the story is really nice and sounds like a fun game. It came out before remind but I can’t remember the name.
Story-wise, 'Goofy, one of the king's closest and most trusted servants, almost commit treason for Sora's sake' -territory that the first game had is something that Kingdom Hearts franchise should've kept included in future games, but instead 'the power of friendship' evolved much closer into it's more stereotypical form of Deus Ex Machina that magically grants good guys victory

KH1 by itself has the best story of all the games IMO. I love all of them, and the world building and connected story through all the games is great (especially how BbS connects everything) but the fact that you have to play 4 or 5 games to see the whole thing is kinda annoying.

Kh1 was simple because it was clearly designed with the intention of being a one off story that was left open ended for potential sequels. It stands alone as a story really damn well. Basically the one game I can play and think "this is silly but the kid in me still loves this." kh2's story gets silly but at the very least the combat is the best in the series and the interactions with the disney characters is still really dang good.

Even though it's shamelessly setting up the plot for the next "saga" of Kingdom Hearts the B-plot of Pete and Maleficent trying to find the Master of Masters' box actually tied in to the worlds pretty well (well, a few of them at least). They go to Olympus because they think it's there when it's actually Pandora's Box! They go to the Caribbean only to find it's the Dead Man's Chest! And even if the majority of the worlds themselves were filler, they always gave a pretty fitting reason for the villains fucking around there near the end. Young Xehanort goes to Toy Box to research how things that originally had no hearts can grow them over time, like the toys did as well as the former Nobodies of Org XIII. Vanitas goes to Monstropolis to test how negative emotions affect the heart, when the monsters themselves used to use the screams of children (fear) to power their city, and the Unversed (which are extensions of Vanitas) are born of negative emotion. Don't forget Monstropolis also gave us the famous "YEETUS VANITAS" moment, which I'm honestly surprised Schafrillas didn't mention. When it comes to Disney characters actually interacting with the KH originals that's the pinnacle of the peak right there. It's all small details that are easy to forget when you look at the big, messy picture but they still stand out to me when I really think back on it.

I’m surprised that he criticized III for its cinematic retellings and didn’t mention it in II. It’s ironic because while I still enjoyed it, the Pride Lands always felt like a watered down rehash of the original film with subpar facial expressions on some of the characters and butchering of dramatic scenes like Mufasa’s death. And then 2019 Lion King arrived to do the exact thing again. Albeit they at least had Hans Zimmer doing excellent redos of his score. II just has Simba walking up Pride Rock in silence.

All KH games have followed the movie plots in some shape or form. It’s at its worst in KH3 with how self-indulgent worlds like Arendelle are with one-to-one recreations of movie scenes, which felt pretty infrequent in previous games. KH3 worlds are also significantly longer than the previous worlds, making them much more of a drag and basically killing the pace of the game, not helped by how they have *literally* zero impact on the plot of KH3 despite the Organization members popping up in every one of them.

ABSOLUTELY FILTERED by the fantastic opening of KH2. It's easily the best opening in the series and one of the best moments in video games, period. Nothing gives off the sense of sorrowful nostalgia for highschool and the waning moments of childhood like Roxas' intro. It also has the best characters in the entire series in it, and you don't need to play Chain of Memories to understand it. You're supposed to be just as confused as Roxas is.

I love KH3, and definitely spent its entire run time crying, but I completely agree about the story pacing. I was convinced I was only halfway through when I got to the final act because no story stuff had happened yet. Even DDD had better pacing than that. Also, I love how suddenly people are talking about KH at the exact time I'm replaying all of them lmao
@saiyan_god_z87553 жыл бұрын
I agree, it really wasn't that complicated when you have all the games on a single console or in your case when you watched all the cutscenes in between online. (I played through all of them like a gamer on proud except for KH 1 cause it was my first game and I sucked). The main reason why people said it was complicated was because of how confused they were when they played different games at different times on different platforms. When I watched the recap video of the entire plot online, I expected to be confused but I really only missed 1 or 2 plot points and some other details. I wouldn't say you missed out storywise, but some of them were pretty fun and enhanced the experience when you played it. Anyways, great video.
@jonah_da_mann3 жыл бұрын
I think the main reason why a lot of people find the series' plot so difficult to follow is because the cutscenes have some of the worst editing I have ever seen. There are absolutely no L-cuts anywhere, meaning that every line of dialogue is followed by a long pause that greatly slows down the overall pace of the game. This only makes the story more difficult to follow than it would be otherwise, because every time the game tries to explain its plot, the player just keeps falling asleep because of how tedious and poorly-edited the cutscenes are. This only becomes more obvious when comparing the cutscenes to the Disney films upon which they are based (e.g. there is no music or atmosphere when Simba is climbing Pride Rock in KH2, and whoever edited Scar's dialogue had absolutely no regard for the natural flow of conversation, because its so stilted and poorly delivered). The cutscenes are just embarassing to anyone who appreciates how meticulously crafted the classic Disney movies are.

@@BobbyTheGamerOfJUSTICE It gets worse as the series progresses. Watch this video for an explanation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4u2Z2mOmt1pnbc However, even the earlier games have a lot of cutscene problems. Frequent lack of music aside, the biggest problem with the scenes is that there are no L-cuts ANYWHERE. If you don't know, an L-cut is when audio from one take overlaps with video from another take. (So for example, Character A is still talking as the camera cuts to a shot of Character B.)
@saiyan_god_z87553 жыл бұрын
@@jonah_da_mann I don't know if they used NO L cuts at all, but I do agree with you that the cutscenes were slow and lacking in engagement with repeated songs that make it feel really slow, especially in the earlier games. I didn't really think that was a major factor, but after what you said I think the bad edits in cutscenes definitely could have had a bigger impact on the understanding of the plot for people with normal attention spans and who aren't exactly engaged in the story. I haven't finished Kingdom Hearts 3 yet (I played the beginning). Is the editing also lacking for that game?

Funnily enough, when I was a younger child first playing this game I had no clue what FF was, and the characters really didn't feel that out of place Edit: I whole-heartedly agree with your thoughts on kh3, even the fan-service-y stuff at the end just doesn't do much for me. It just sort of feels like everything happens with little build-up or flow throughout. Maybe I expected too much from kh3, but damn, the ending (starting from the final battles) was extremely unsatisfying and underwhelming as a conclusion to this 18-year saga. By far, my biggest problem with the finale of KH3 is that they just had to include THREE unending hordes of heartless that present a hopeless situation that require special means to win. I am so happy you made this video! I'm currently speedrunning kingdom hearts 1, and throughout my years have always replayed one and two. The second used to be my favorite, but nostalgia and live events changed it so that kingdom hearts won was my favorite out of all of them. Mostly with the challenge of the combat and how complex the story was for children at least and didn't really pander so much to the Disney plot lines... some people make it mad at me for saying this but I personally think that kingdom hearts 2 was the perfect ending to the Sora story arch, and a perfect place to start a new arc with somebody else. Everything just ended so perfectly and everything was so satisfying once it was done. I felt that kingdom hearts 3 and all the other stuff that followed was a little unnecessary, but I still cherish the series

@@IceKing89 I think the game was in developer hell for a few years, which doesn't surprise me seeing Nomura directed it, the guy is kinda nuts. I think they even had to swap game engines midway through development.
@sufferbunny91733 жыл бұрын
On top of both production issues (most likely of Nomura’s doing) and a 13 year wait that contributed to massive overhype, the dev team decided to use tons of newer Disney IPs and because of that Disney’s Brand Management Teams wouldn’t allow them to stray too far from the original plots of most of the worlds with the biggest example being Frozen. They actually planned to add Frozen to the game before Frozen’s official story was even finished, specifically when Elsa was being conceptualized as the villain, so when the movie didn’t match up with what the Dev team created and Disney now having a goldmine of an IP in their hands, they became much more overbearing with how the dev team portrayed Frozen in the game. Disney wanted them to make Arendelle as movie accurate as possible and lots of the work the team had done on the world already just didn’t fit the requirements so they tried to salvage and repurpose as much as they could causing the final product to feel disjointed and just overall off. I’m sure a lot of that bled into the rest of the game’s production as well. There’s actually a good video speculating on what Arendelle would have originally been like. Overall I’d say KH3 could have been a lot better if Disney would’ve just let the team do their thing instead of getting picky over every tiny detail but hey I guess that’s just how Disney is nowadays. It wouldn’t have fixed everything but I bet it would have given the team a lot more breathing room to fix up and iron out pacing issues, gameplay, and just overall enjoyment of the game. So much wasted potential and for once I don’t believe the dev team was a major contributor to the problem.
