Scheduled freight trains weighing 2400 tons with two steam locomotives! | Plandampf (4K)

Steam locomotives in use in front of international freight trains? That was made possible by the active members of the Bavarian Railway Museum! From September 21 to September 25, 2021, 44 546 and 58 311 ran in front of several scheduled beet trains between Gunzenhausen, Nördlingen and Donauwörth; the journey to Switzerland was carried out with an electric locomotive. With a train weight of up to 2400t, the two steam locomotives have to do a great job.

Thank you for capturing this wonderful footage in great scenery too. One cannot imagine that kind of operation being allowed in the UK and we no longer have the direct secondary routes on which it could be done. A question for the technical experts amongst the viewers of this film. Why were both locos running with the cylinder drains open long after the time when one might imagine that the cylinders were warmed and condensation cleared? Did I imagine it or did the lead loco in the earlier footage not have a lubrication issue with the crosshead? That squeak sounded worrying to my inexperienced ear.

The drains hvn't been open, they just were not fully closed to let any possible condensation out (better save than sorry). thr BR58 (the sqeeker) had a leaking gland, so no real harm, just not great for performance and sound, but sadly nothing that could be solved over night or between trains (the locos ran from dawn to dusk for a week).
