Sometimes a good watering will stabilize the tree in the pot before pruning. Water will add weight to the mix, thus, keeping it steady. Great pruning and a terrific looking Xin Schef you received.

Good. A few suggestions: Water the plant before you start. Place extra wires through the drainage holes for tying the roots. When the roots are there, but the top soil is not, tie the roots firmly in place. Nigel likes to put rocks there instead, because these root ties will damage the roots in the long run. However, one can always do an operation to remove the ties before they cut in, and rocks do a mediocre job at securing the roots . At any rate, wire or rocks, secure the roots. When all new soil is in, water the plant. After watering I like to press on the soil with the back end of a chopstick, or 2-3 chopsticks glued together to compact it and get rid of extra water. The pruning you do is pretty massive. Schefflera is a real survivor, so it won't affect it. But more delicate plants would be damaged. I suggest not combining rootwork and pruning (except for very minor pruning), but making sure roots establish themselves, new leaf buds appear, and only then pruning the tree.
