Another good argument against "I can cross the hands over in my armor" is that while you can do it in your armor, a Landsknecht is not made of money (there may even be a song or two about this issue) and if you manage to scavenge a slightly ill-fitting breastplate, you will definitely not want to leave it behind to land your cuts. Because the ability to make neat cuts pales in comparison to the ability to not die when stabbed. One thing I'd like to add for the folks at home that read comments - if you want to catch a blow onto your halfsword, it is absolutely critical to catch that blow as soon as possible. Move forward the very second you can. If you just stand and block... well, I've tried it with gloves on against a bastard sword, and I'm not sure I'd have been able to do anything productive as a followup on account of how painful and how much of a shock to the forearms it was. I can only imagine the pure suffering that would be getting hit full blast with a proper longsword, let alone a Schlachtschwert. I'm also skeptical if that "keep hand open to let opponent's blade slide above it" advice actually works at speed - it's far too easy to angle the blade just so to either get your fingers caught in it anyway or have a bad support behind the sword. It's not that hard to angle your sword (through hands and footwork) so that all strikes slide towards your crossguard anyway, and I'd rather have the blade not bounce/slide off after the impact. That said, it is a good advice if you are trying things out at low(er) intensity and speed.

Im not sure if the Doppelsöldner would be that poor. They were for the most part the better paid mercenaries often from a higher social standing/class and bring their own well fitted stuff. it is for this reason they were hired as Doppelsöldner. And Schlachtschwerter were often required with Harness and were partly paid double because of their equipment. Also the depictions often show them without gloves or without arm armour and instead with maile armor on arms. Wouldn't trust the songs too much even if they are contemporary. Crossing the arms is sometimes done in german traditions iirc with the flügeln. I remember that other cultures do have that crossing with arms with great swords in armour as well. Though i think its mostly personal preference and tradition.
