My door came with a Kwikset deadbolt and handleset which I want to replace with a Schlage based on your video. Are Kwikset and Schlage dimensionally identical such that I don't need to drill or cut anything? Just a screwdriver like you showed? Thanks.
@S.E.Locksmith5 жыл бұрын
You are definitely right you shouldn’t have any issues installing Schlage deadbolt Locks as long is your door cutout installation is for 2-3/8”-2-3/4” Backset and center hole where the cylinder side and the thumb-tern side goes into are 2-1/8” diameter.

Please help! I just bought a house and went to switch out the old kwikset door and deadbolt with new Schlage but Schlage is 1” barrel doesn’t fit
@S.E.Locksmith5 жыл бұрын
What do you mean doesn’t fit ? Do you mean that the Schlage deadbolt not aligned with the strike plate ? Or doesn’t go all the the way to the frame ?
@Shino26005 жыл бұрын
Silver Eagle Locksmith it doesn’t go all the way into the door frame. The frame has a 7/8”’hole and the Schlage is 1” diameter and I don’t want to bore out more because it’s a metal front door and it much room in the middle of the door
@Shino26005 жыл бұрын
So I ended up buying a 1” hole bore drill bit and opened it up A little to fit the Kwiskset smartkey set. The only thing was the new plate was to use 2 screws on top and 2 on bottom and didn’t fit in the existing area on the door where the previous deadbolt was

Kwikset sells a reset cradle that you can use if you mess up the rekey. You dont need the original key to do it either.

I know that, but you can save the time and money because I made a video of How To Reset Kwikset Smart Key Without the Current Key Or The Reset Tool ✅ kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5XZiql9nLKtnqM

You recommended the SCHLAGE but then you showed that you were able to pick it in 15 secs. I dont want this ability, i leave my home sometimes for weeks on end i need a pick-proof deadbolt. Which one?
@S.E.Locksmith5 жыл бұрын
If you need a pick resistant deadbolt and higher security I’ll go with Mul T Lock MT5+
@yotapualie5 жыл бұрын
Realistically how hard is it for common criminal to pick the Schlage? I assume you have done this several times so you have some practice. So, can the common criminal pick it in under 40 seconds?
@BrandonBaumvideo4 жыл бұрын
@@yotapualie Probably. It's not a hard lock to pick and the average person can learn to pick one pretty quickly in a short period of time. If you want something very pick resistant, go with the Mul-T-Lock Interactive or MT5+.
@S.E.Locksmith4 жыл бұрын
I completely disagree with you. Even if you learn how to pick a Schlage lock in a short period of time, for example: You never pick a lock before and someone teaches you how to pick a Schlage deadbolt so you’ll practice a day or so and you might pick it, but to be a good lock picker this is something that you will have to do every single day with different type of locks and keyways in different variety of locks. Now if we’re going back to that Schlage Lock so if you’re lucky to pick it fast enough The second lock that you will deal with and try to pick most likely will not be as lucky as the first one... and it’s true for the 3rd, 4th or even 30th Schlage locks that you’ll try to pick. Long story short if you don’t do that as a hobby/professional or as part of your daily routine so picking locks out of the ordinary will be a very difficult thing even if it’s just a regular Schlage lock because each cylinder have its own unique combination, not mentioning that many of the new and old Schlage cylinders use top mushroom pins which make things even harder to pick. Yet again some will agree with me here and some will not, but this is my professional opinion.

So who makes the best dead bolt lock? Drill resistant and pick resistant... Prefer with a key inside and out for the best protection... Always looking to make my home safer for my family... Have a great day...
@S.E.Locksmith5 жыл бұрын
If you have the money to invest I will recommend you the Mul T Lock MT5+ It’s high security deadbolt lock. You can also find it with double sided key (me personally I don’t recommend double sided deadbolts on a house doors because of fire or emergency etc). If you are short with money and looking for a pick and bum resistant lock so the Kwikset Smartkey is better than Schlage. Hope that help

@@S.E.Locksmith Always have a key close by... The main reason is my back door has a window that can be knocked out and a regular twist knob deadbolt could be opened easily... The front door is a solid no window with no close windows... Thanks for the rapid response... Have a great day...

What I told all my customers is the same thing: when you worried about a door with the windows, you shouldn’t be because if they already broke the windows what the lock will do any good for them? They can get out the same way so there is no reason to pull a double sided deadbolts

@@S.E.Locksmith But it sure will slow them down... If the door is still locked they will need to crawl over the broken glass and give me time to react... Hopefully one more bad guy off the street for some time...

In that case I will recommend you to apply the 3M Window Security Film to protect the glass window. It will definitely slower than down much more than a double side deadbolt. Watch my video on my channel about the 3M window security film

Schlage is the way to go their cylinders are made of high quality brass And a good locksmith can rekey them in less then 15 minutes he will have the Schlage pinning kit and the numbers on the key are the depth numbers for pins in the lock, locksmiths I know will rekey them for free if your buying the locks from him. Kwikset is junk made of die cast metal and I have pulled the key plug out of one using a dent puller tool

Kwikset locks suck and their electronic locks are worse. They are built with such crappy motors and it just doesn’t have as many features as the Schlage. Spend a little more and get Schlage. Schlage electronic locks have amazing motors and so many features.

Jeff Morris, Homeowner Which is better-Schlage or Kwikset? 8-6-24 After 20 years, my exterior Kwikset deadbolts and latches were weathered and needed replacing. I bought a Schlage F Series deadlatch and B Series deadbolts , much to my disappointment. Here’s what I found: While Schlage gets great reviews, I found that the internal mechanisms were inferior. Here are examples: • A metal piece in the cylinder of the F Series deadlatch is prone to breakage. The problem is easily found online. When that happens, the key gets stuck in the lock. That metal piece broke when I was installing the cylinder. The whole thing came apart, and I had to get another one. • The rectangular rod that goes into a rectangular slot to activate the latch should be machined its entire length. Currently, only part of the rod is machined to fit the slot, and if the rod isn’t inserted all the way into the slot, the mechanism won’t work. This can be frustrating when you’re installing the latch • In the B series deadbolt cylinder, the rectangular rod that actuates the lock inserts into a rectangular slot in a small plastic part. That’s right, plastic. The corresponding Kwikset mechanism is all metal. Much more durable. • The aforementioned plastic part falls out of the cylinder if the rod is not inserted into the slot-for example, when you open the package and pick up the cylinder, or when it’s being installed. There are no instructions indicating how to put it back into position. • Installation instructions are incomplete and worthless. And Schlage does not seem to offer a useful online tutorial, at least not one that can easily be found by navigating Schlage‘s websites. Parts diagrams don’t name all parts. That can make it difficult to explain a problem or to reorder parts. • The keys supplied with the deadbolts get stuck in the lock. That may be due to lack of machining precision. Or it may be due to dryness, or a combination of both. The problem may be solved by applying copious amounts of 3-in-1 oil or Lock-Ease before installation. But if it’s the result of a critical metal part in the F Series latch cylinder breaking, which frequently happens according to websites on the subject, all the oil in the Middle East won’t solve the problem. So if a key gets stuck, is it the result of a locking or latching mechanism that broke or fell out of place, or is it simply lack of lubrication? Schlage claims that its deadbolt and lever designs have been in place for decades. Why hasn’t the company done something to rectify the problems? Perhaps more funding should be allocated to improving the design, incorporating more durable parts, and providing useful installation instructions and tutorials rather than advertising and marketing. It was a shame to throw away the Kwikset latch and deadbolts, which worked perfectly throughout the 20 years they were installed. But sun damage took its toll. The new Schlage hardware looks beautiful and works well, that is, after many frustrating hours of installation frustration and aggravation.

I checked out a kwikset after it was installed on my house for about a month..it was rusting and corroding on the inside..Not to mention PLASTIC parts being used..horrible choice. The grade 3 schlage I was actually wanting to replace was on the door for 3 years and looked pretty good (other than providing mediocre pick and bump key resistance). I have since used a Schlage b560p, so far it’s pretty good.
