I'm always on the lookout for something new at the local bottle shop, and I found a Schlitz 12 pack of 12 ounce cans, and very affordable. Given the affordable price and relative obscurity today, I was stunned at how good this beer is. Very rich and full flavored for a macrobrew American lager. I'm now a big fan of Schlitz. I just hope I can keep finding it. Great review!

This is a bit misleading. Schlits DID actually become a garbage beer during the 70's/early 80's. It was due to INTENTIONAL product degradation by Schlitz. Of course...in order to save money. My grandfather drank Old Milwaukee (the OTHER Schlitz product) back then so I am familiar with that. When Pabst bought the rights to Schlitz, they tried (through various agencies) to re-create the original as closely as possible. THIS version is what you are drinking. And it's pretty damned good, honestly. Also...enough time has past that only us old heads remember the crap that Schlits WAS, when it went under. The younger generations (those under 40 or so), don't have any of the negative feelings towards the name brand so they only judge it based on it's merits TODAY.

Schlitz was bought by Stroh's in 1982, who in turn was bought by Pabst in 1998 I think. The formula was changed in the 70's and that is why it when down hill pretty fast. It wasn't until about 2007, when I started drinking it that it's went back to the supposed 60's formula.

I worked for the Schilz company in NC in the can division. the timeline you gave is correct. . In the 60's they were the number one beer in america. They tried to speed up the process and bying doing so a lot of "green beer" hit the market . As a resul they destroyed their reputation

I recall in about late 1970 Schlitz was presented in short neck bottles. It was a fine tasting beer and something I enjoyed for awhile. Good to hear Pabst is attempting to brew the beer as close to the original recipe as possible. Have to keep a lookout for it. Nothing wrong with being thrifty with your choice of "lawnmower beer."

It's funny... I used to work for COORS, just out of the Marines, and really didn't drink beer. Fastforward 31 years and I retired from the local PD. I started golfing & enjoying a good beer. I really like all kinds, except Burbon or whiskey barrel beers. I try to have different styles from different breweries every week. I had a low opinion of COORS, well all American Lagers. After one round of Golf, I had a COORS banquet tall boy and was surprised it was pretty good. I guess I should try a Schiltz. My brother, a beer-aholic since High School, only drinks Bud. It doesn't matter where our older brother & I take him or the 100 beers on tap, he only drinks Bud.

Growing up in the '60s my Dad let me take sips of his Schlitz and it was pretty darn good. Then came the Great Beer ruination of Milwaukee WI" in the '70s when Schlitz, Old Style, and others were ruined by the corporate greed. The last time I drank a Schlitz they had brought back the old recipe, so they said, under the name "Schlitz Classic" and while it was good I dont think it was "as good". A lot probably had to do with Chicago in the '60s when beer flew off the shelf, Schlitz most of all, so the beer was so fresh all the time.

Pabst! Blue! Ribbon! I’ve never had a Schlitz either. Actually other than the puzzle I have behind my desk, I didn’t know they existed until last couple years. Euro lagers tend to have a better aroma to me than ours. “Always heard adults talk about Schlitz like it was garbage.” 😂 EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN!

I have Schlitz in my Fridge. I really enjoy it. I used to drink it in the late 70's until they changed the recipe. Between Naraganneset and Schlitz I enjoy both. Cheers!

When old regional breweries still existed, drinkers were devoted to their brands. Then, marketing by big business convinced young consumers that the old familiar brands were inferior. I was fortunate growing up around my parent’s bar in the 1960’s and ‘70s. I drank a lot of beer, including Schlitz.

Believe it or not... I'm south of the Twin Cities metro and cant get it here in Minnesota. They used to carry the 1960 recipe in tallboys here, but when it sold out, they quit distributing all Schlitz here

I"m one of those older guys who would've told you that Schlitz was awful. The reason is, around the time I was old enough to drink in the late 1970s, Schlitz to increase profits changed their formula and went to a quick brew process that ruined what was once the number one or two beer in America and destroyed their brand. Everyone switched to Miller or Budweiser. I've heard they have now gone back to their original formula, and just looking at the beer on you video the it is obviously darker than Bud and has an impressive long lasting head. It makes me want to try it again and see for myself. It would be great to see this venerable American lager make a comeback.

The reason they used to talk about Schlitz like that is because Schlitz had a period of time when their beer was made with processed ingredients and a chemical thickener. They eventually abandoned that method of production and returned to natural ingredients. But it was too late. Their reputation and sales were destroyed and that led to the company being sold to Pabst.

Before it went downhill Schlitz was _the_ beer around where I grew up. Dad wasn't a big beer drinker but I remember sometimes when we were out running errands he'd pick up a six pack and it was always Schlitz and that was mainly what the store stocked for beer. Now, I think you could find it in a larger store but it would be a niche product.

Schlitz went back to their original formula, there was a period when it was terrible. They used to have a premium beer called Erlanger which was awesome.

Starting in the late sixties, Schlitz got really bad when the company started to try and cut costs. Recently they've been doing things to return it to its former glory, but people of a certain age (boomers mainly) will never trust the beer.

In the 1970s Schlitz changed its formula kind of like how Coke changed theirs in the 80s in both cases the customers who bought their products hated it the difference was that Coke changed back to its classic formula within 3 to 4 months Schlitz did not and shot themselves in the foot as they lost the majority of their Customers they went from being the number one or two beer competing with Budweiser for the number one selling beer in America sometimes they were on top and sometimes they weren't. They went to becoming that garbage beer that people told you about it wasn't until they found some master brew makers that worked for Schlitz to recreate the 1960s formula that people still liked that it started tasting decent again trust me I had a Schlitz in the 80s and it was awful.... I was at a party.... in 2008.... and someone handed me a beer in a glass and I said "hey this taste good!!" then they showed me the bottle it came in an it was the 60s formula Schlitz needless to say I was pleasantly surprised and shocked cause lets be absolutely honest once you taste awful tasting beer normally most people would not give it a second chance and now I buy it from time to time when at one time I would not have give it a chance again.

Schlitz was garbage than they cheapened it cut corners it was ruined.I hear that they are back making drinkable beer again.They were really great beers back in the day.sixties and earlier.
