When I was filming this video, my Sclumbergera truncata, or Thanksgiving Cactus was not showing any signs of bloom, but now as this is running, the plant is in bloom with its bright pink flowers. It takes the 218th spot of "365 Days of Plants".
In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.
You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.

Awe I'm so happy she started to bud, I knew she would for you soon🤗 I can't wait for the buds on mine to get bigger and start opening. Quick question, I didn't hear you say anything about pollinating the seeds from the flower and I was wondering if you could pollinate the flowers on this type of plant? I grow mine in about 4 hrs of morning sun and she does really well here in Central Florida. She likes a little afternoon break because we get so much excessive heat and humidity.. luckily the winters are beautiful here.

suzanne here, that being one of my fav plants, for over 40 years, is a thanksgiving cactus, they love orchid bark, half soil, tons of them in my house, i live in the southern US and i keep most of mine outside in summer where our temps hit over 100 and very high humidity, this year i put half my stock outside, and they are going absolutely nuts, i do not bring them in, at all till after first frost, because that sets their buds, the only thing that kills them is over watering and lack of humidity, they love to be misted indoors every day, i have about 50 plus in my collection as they are my fav house plants, those and snake plants

These plants are super tough!! I highly recommend it for newbies. I inherited one form my grandma and it survived all the bad care I gave it. It was in a tiny pot without any drainage and I repotted it only after around 10 years (the plant was super top heavy with stems longer than 1 meter). I also over watered it often and it still thrived! They can take more water than regular cactus. Now that I know more about plants, I am more carefull with it but it's reassuring to know that it will take a lot of neglect. The only thing I did right was to give it a lot of bright sunlight. Now it's in full bloom and it's gorgeous!

Awesome! a plant I do have and actually I have a 25 plus year old one that was my mother's, it might be older than than, she is not around to ask, the other one is 15 years old, the older ones do get the woody stem, and they are so easy to propagate, I do have a few others that are the Christmas and one that I think could be the Easter cactus. I have mine growing in a south east facing window, pulled back a couple of feet, they love where they are so I won't move them. I do live in the north, in Idaho, we have harsh winters. Other than that I have had no problem growing them and they bloom whenever they are ready. I love all of them. Thanks so much Summer for sharing this plant, have a great day and I will see you tomorrow, bye for now.

I have one of this variety. Named her Oat-C. (Over Achiever Thanksgiving - Cactus) The first year I had her, she bloomed for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Valentines day, St Patrick's day and Easter! She was a section of a friends cactus that came off when the parent plant was dropped. The section was poked into the ground, outside, in her fairy garden and pretty much forgotten over summer. In the fall, she potted her up and brought her over to me. I feed Oat-C the same as I do the rest of my plants and little plantlets. I water her about half as often, or when she feels quite dry. Up until a couple of weeks ago, she was still in the garden soil my friend originally used, three years ago. That was halfway down in the pot, now, so I gently picked her out, leaving the original soil around the roots and added fresh under and around her, so she's sitting 'up' in her pot. She must not have minded the 'move' because she has lots of new growth, again! She's several feet back from a west facing window, under a grow light from sunset til around midnight and seems to like the arrangement!

These are such tough little plants. I had one in the same (too large) pot for 4 years and sparsely watered it. It was dormant until I ran my humidifier last winter, and then, it put out a dozen or so new leaves. I'm not sure why I got into really caring for my houseplants, but whatever the case, repotting it was a big part of my to-do list. I repotted a month ago and it's just surviving right now. Maybe it's just adjusting to its new pot. I am very proud of it, regardless :)

It has also been in the same pot for the last 10 years and seems to like being root bound. It gets watered once a week and has thrived

I just took a clipping of my grandmother's plant and it just rooted in orchid bark and bonsai mix. I put a little African violet mix around the clipping just to give it a boost and so I may stop watering it so much. It looks quite sad and weak, but it must be doing okay if it's developing roots. I have it in the basement next to other plants under artificial light. I have it about a foot away from a normal light bulb and it seems to do quite well. I joke with my boyfriend that since every mother seems to have one of these, now I have doomed us into parenthood by allowing this to take root in my home. I am loving these jungle cacti.

I've had the same sort of cactus for several years. I think it was a reddish color but . . . that's how long since it flowered for me. Odd, because I've had Schlumbergera-types since I was young and they seemed to flower easily. So I dug around. Seems they need a seasonal treatment similar to Poinsettias to trigger flowering. Condensing four videos I just watched, there are three requirements to get blooms in *eight to twelve weeks:* A) -- Cooler nights, about 55F or so (but not below 40F.) B) -- 12 to 14 hours of DARKNESS every day! C) -- Keep it on the dry side, perhaps even near-extreme dryness. Fertilizing with a high "P" value at the start of the process will promote flowering. But don't fertilize after starting, since you'll be keeping it on the very dry side and you don't want salt-burning. Here is a nice professional run-thru: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5WnqIdsesqemZI

Mine was a gift I received last year. It’s small. I’m clueless when it comes to cacti but am growing fond of them. I heard a trick about giving weak black coffee to poinsettia’s so I tried it with my cacti….it bloomed! One single blossom. It’s hanging on and I’m searching how to care for it. I'm inspired by all of the comments about people's thriving geriatric Xmas cactus! I had no idea they could last so long. I have one small one indoors that I tend to forget about, because it's sort of bedraggled and blah looking for most of the year. But it's at least 7 years old, and still blooms lovely pink flowers every year. I'm sorry to report I have never fertilized it, so maybe next growing season I will start. I got a bigger one last year with white blooms, but moved it outside after the holiday, ( and honestly wasn't expecting it to survive). I put it under my Black Bamboo forest in the yard last year, and now it's out there blooming like crazy! P.S. I always think of spider plants as the "everyone has one" plant! ( I can't stop my compulsion to propagate the pups - and I literally have 30+ potted spider plants now. Lol.).

I’ve had a thanksgiving for about 2 years, I bought it as a birthday present for my mom, I’ve had it outside from the start and it’s grown more than twice it’s size and blooms like crazy. It’s been raining a lot lately so I know it’s been getting a LOT of water so I’ve been debating if I should move it but so far it still looks pretty healthy, it drains well. The only time I was concerned with having it outside was when we had snow last year for about a month even though I live in the Bay Area 😱 the cold look like it left tiny scorched marks scattered on it but for the majority it was fine. I have I think a small Easter one too id say it’s around 3-4 inches tall, got it a year ago and has hardly grown and hasn’t bloomed since I got it, I keep it next to the thanksgiving one. Learning now that they like it indoors too so maybe the Easter plant would be happier inside?

I have mine outside where it gets indirect morning light, it’s been in the same place since I bought it a little over 3 years ago. Overall it’s a very healthy plant and it gets new growth and it blooms vibrate red flowers. It blooms from Halloween right into the New Year. The leaves instantly turned burgundy after it’s first growing season. I just learned that the leaves should not be burgundy, oops 😬 However, I do not fertilize it. Is that the reason for the burgundy leaves? It does really well otherwise that I never thought to question the coloring...

We have one that has grown drastically over the year that we've had it. But, what happens when we can't have the temperature fall (drop) or provide the long nights (darkness)? Will it still bloom? Or, can we hopefully assume that since it's growing like crazy, it will produce flowers? Here it is past Thanksgiving, and nothing but new growth, no signs of budding.

Oh thank you for this video Summer just in time too!! I purchased a small one just before Thanksgiving and it had many buds!! Since then I've had it under a grow light a few feet from my southeast-facing window and sadly it dropped all of it's buds but now getting tiny new pinkish buds I believe. I read somewhere that because they're short day plants that they need at least 15 hours of darkness, is that true? Thank you for any input Summer!!💖😁🙏-

I have one, sort of lackluster but it’s growing slowly. It flowers right at Thanksgiving time. I’m wondering if you know what the tiny, barely noticeable white...things🤷‍♀️ are that grow out of some of the leaves. I wish I could post a pic. They remind me of short cilia.

I can grow these outside but not inside 🤷🏻‍♀️ I did get a really big one years ago & it got scale 🥺 and I couldn’t save it, but I tried again with smaller ones & they’re good outside (I’m in California outside LA)

I am curious about scale and wondered if you could tell me more? I have a Thanksgiving cactus that was my mother's, probably almost 20 years old now. It has very woody stems, and has done very well with light watering once a week. It has always flowered beautifully with large dark pink blossoms everywhere. This year, the stems started falling off of it. I have tried watering it less, watering it more, feeding it, and finally transplanting it into a larger pot, but nothing seems to stop the stems from falling off. Perhaps it is sick?

I bought mine from someone, who didn't take good care of it. It was laying down and when I took over, now it's standing up. Original owner doesn't have a proper drain pot. Can I repot it in a drain pot even it's starting to bloom? I had it for a month or so. 🤷‍♀️

The smooth-edged plants are a different species: Schlumbergera buckleyi. S. truncata has sharper 'teeth' on its segments.

@@AnneOnymaus When I made this comment 3 years ago I probably meant older species not specimens. At least in my country, the older species is not being sold commercially anymore. No idea why.

I find them very difficult to take care of. It's hard to figure out the soil type, light and water requirements. Not to mention the quantity of light and temperature for them to bloom. Definitely not a plant for beginners.
