Gonna say that Kratt is the phantom. He goes crazy because his crushes don’t return his feelings. he selects certain women he likes to perform at the expense of another woman’s job. he has his selected seat that no one else can sit in. he owns the theater and scares everyone. Last nights episode was reminiscent of the point of no return when Melissa pretended she liked him to try to trap him for Dooley. Then he demands that she goes with him, he puts her in the car and drives off, threatens josh like the phantom did raoul, and gives her an engagement ring.

Wasn’t Cinco Paul involved in Netflix’s Series of Unfortunate Events? Those twins were part of Olaf’s traveling theater troop. So could be a reference to that as well. I also got a few moments of "Funny Honey" in Melissa's song. I’m hoping Sgt. Rivera gives us some La cage aux folles (I know it’s the 80’s but) I swear there was a nod when he touched the feather boa in episode 2. Yay! I love Stealing Focus! And Kratt is giving Phantom vibes!

The twins (Jacqueline and Joyce Robbins) are a Vancouver staple! They were the twins in Series of Unfortunate Events, which was directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed Season 1 of Schmigadoon. Cecily's My Turn Now has chord progressions lifted from Chicago's Funny Honey. This show does that a lot. They throw one chord progression or 1-2 loops of a riff in a song so you barely notice it. Also The Famous as Hel song nods to Evita and the narrator Che (The Money Kept Rolling in, "Oh What a Circus" montages) especially from the movie and Antonio Banderas's montage scenes. He sings a lot as he stands behind protestors and weaves in and out of the crowds. Sgt. Rivera is also dressed as Col. Juan Peron.

KZbin's algorithm is being nice enough to push lots of Schmigadoon content into my main page, including numbers from the first season. I was re-watching Tribulation and I suddenly realized...MILDRED LAYTON WAS RIGHT. "And that's just the beginning, folks Soon you won't even, no you won't know, you won't even Recognize your own town I'm talking about neon signs, smoke-filled rooms Billiard parlors and painted ladies Wanton women having children out of wedlock Rowdy men using filthy language The devil himself, dancing on your front porch Stealing your babies from their cribs at midnight Cows and sheep having amorous congress Children with the mark of the beast on their foreheads! All thanks to these two out-of-towners Doctor Skinner and Miss Gimble" The second half of that seems like obvious hyperbole, but I sort of wonder if it could be sideways references to the Narrator, Kratt, Topher's flock dressing up for parables, and the orphans?

This may seem a stretch, but I thought another influence on the song "It's My Turn Now" is "One" from A Chorus Line. The introductary vamp is definitely similar, and I noticed the lyrics are a clever inversion of "One." --Instead of praising the girl as in One (One singular sensation, every little step she takes, etc) Melissa sings "I'm not the one, I was in the background, I didn't dance,etc" The underscore, particularly in the first half also echoes One. There is a definite point where that fades and it more clearly follows "Maybe This Time," though, for sure. Or it could just be a coincidence as "One" was always meant to be a 30's style number anyway. Though, from the level of detail, are there any coincidences in this series?

I thought It’s My Turn Now also had a Rose’s Turn from Gypsy vibe, especially with the roses that Kratt sent Melissa. And I’m in love with Melissa’s dress from that number. It’s like all of the influences from this season rolled up into one fabulous, fluffy frock, the culmination of Melissa’s breakout arc from being uncomfortable as the center of attention and feeling like she didn’t fit in with the other talented, attractive showgirls.

Okay, who else noticed that Topher finished with Josh and then his eyes went to Josh's mouth and he leaned in jusssst a touch before pulling back? I loved that. As usual Marc, you've done an amazing job turning this around so fast and with such good production values yourself. I agree with you completely about the love for everyone working on the show who puts so much thought and love and effort into every single aspect of design (production, costume, dance, etc.) and then the people doing the singing/dancing - I love your upbeat take, as it matches mine. I agree that I really want to know more about the Sergeant and Madame Frau and what their backstory is. I also loved watching the third back-up singer get drunker throughout and start messing up the choreography and the other two getting ticked off at her! Another set of people who always give 100% and there is always something for your eye to see. I loved that Titus got this song. He's so great. I wonder if he's going to turn out to be our real evil genius. He does seem to constantly egg on the worst of things/people. He gives us the eye like "aren't they dopes" but he just tricked them! One more episode? How can they wrap it all up!? And yes, I've probably listened to Famous as Hell at least four times now and I plan on listening to it again some more.

The weird use of “sour” also gave me “Heaven on Their Minds” Ok, so you might have done it unintentionally, but “pent-ultimate” - like second-to-last PLUS fifth - was friggin’ genius. Absolutely LOVED Famous As Hell. The close-up of Mel’s foot as she walks onstage gave me chills for some reason. And the inclusion of Joanne in that part lends some credence to someone’s speculation she might be part Lucy from Sweeney Todd. My only quibble with any of it is that in order to have been splattered with blood, little Melissa would have had to sit through enough of Sweeney to know he’s a bad dude, right? She wouldn’t know the big twist, but would be well aware he’s at least a murderer 🤷🏼♀️ Devastated there’s only one left, but cannot wait to see how it all gets wrapped up. Emmys all around, IMO. Congrats, Marc, on another bright, delightful and insightful breakdown of ''Schmigadoon!'' By the way, could your series be eligible for Emmy's Outstanding Short Form Non-Fiction or Reality Series? All those entries tend to be show-related, behind-the-scenes programs. And speaking of Emmys, I hope you saw the Hollywood Reporter scoop that says ''Schmigadoon!'' will no longer be competing in the overcrowded Comedy category; it's been moved to the far less cutthroat Scripted Variety Series. ... As for that callout to Dorothy Fields and that storefront with ''baby sizes available,'' Fields once wrote ''Pink Taffeta Sample Size 10,'' a song about how she used to fantasize about this dress she wanted when she was a girl. Maybe this is too obscure, but it was cut from ''Sweet Charity.'' Cheers!

Bummer Apple didn't let this one go 8 eps (like season 1 was supposed to). Too much plot & not enough episodes for resolve. Hopefully this will garner even more awards than the original season...virtually guaranteeing Apple will renew! The trio of backup singers at the end reminded me more of Little Shop of Horrors backup divas (including Tichina Arnold now on The Neighborhood)...and LSH would certainly be considered a "dark musical" and a similar timeframe.

Here's what's keeping me up at night: the fact that they keep getting "carried away" and (what really surprised me this episode) Josh just started singing during an argument. Makes me remember that theory that "Schmigadoon!" residents are all people who stumble across the city and got stuck. Maybe this will age poorly, but I think the season will end with they forgetting themselves and staying in the city. They already want to stay anyway.

Speaking of Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, while "It's My Turn Now" is clearly an homage to "Maybe This Time," I also heard a musical and lyrical nod to Coleman and Field's "Nobody Does it Like Me" from Seesaw. Specifically, the "If there's a wrong way to do it, right way to screw it up, nobody does it like me," seems to be reflected in "I've never been the girl who gets attention, I've never been the one who got the part. Believe me, there's no honor in honorable mention, but I've made it an art"

I wonder if the potential 3rd season for Schmigadoon/Schmicago will go backwards rather than forwards. Like, 1st time period was old-timey and then just a step more modern for season 2, but what if they go back, full period piece for "Les Miserables" or "Phantom" vibe?
@cathymunson-kleinmetacrone6428 Жыл бұрын
That would be moving forward, since both Les Mis and Phantom are from the 1980s and the show chooses its influences based on when a musical was first performed. I don’t see how they could do the 80s and 90s without those 2 shows, plus Into the Woods, Rent, Hedwig, La Cage aux Folles, Dreamgirls and The Lion King at a bare minimum. A possible theme of letting your kids grow up and go out into the dangers of the world could encompass them all- the orphans they might adopt will be older teens in 5-10 years.
@tfly999 Жыл бұрын
@@cathymunson-kleinmetacrone6428 EXACTLY! And, yes, that's the Melissa and Josh situation, they go back 3rd season thinking they're prepared for a forward time jump, but only afterward find out Schmigadoon operates with chronological musical debuts, so all their preparation for 'modern' musicals is ruined when they find themselves in period piece.
