Yes certainly. I have used them with reed and bamboo pens. Just make sure that the mix is of the best consistency. You may need to make the paint a little more watery or a little thicker - whatever works best with the pen.

I'm just starting out with illumination and calligraphy. Are these paints appropriate for painting illuminations as well?

Absolutely! They are the closest to the egg tempera used in mediaeval manuscripts as they are opaque and so cover any guidelines. Not only are they suitable for lettering but they are also a dream to use with a brush (and I don't get a commission from them to say these things! I just think they're really good paints and like to share good stuff!)
