As the previous commenter stated, it's not a problem with the batch. The granulation is characteristic of certain pigments used in watercolors so as you get to know your paints, you will understand how each one behaves. Pigments with cobalt, manganese, or ultramarine are all ones that you can expect to have granulation with (of varying degrees). There are more out there such as the natural earth pigments and more but mostly in your palette, those will be the ones to watch out for. Generally, Asian watercolors (Holbein) or watercolor-like paints such as the Gambi's (semi-opaque, mineral based watercolors with a slight sheen uses for Gambi Painting such as Kuratake Gambi), will have very smooth colors as the style of their paints are anti-granulation. The problem with that is then they have to mix pigments which don't granulate to achieve the same color (if you want to stick with single pigment formulations). Granulation also becomes more apparent the rougher the texture of your paper is. It will settle in the valleys of the paper surface. Regarding your brush coaxing out the color from the pans. Before starting to paint, either spray a mist of bottled or distilled water over the pans a couple minutes prior to using. OR use your brush, fill the brush with water and gently release some drops onto the color and let to sit. You will be able to pick up stronger color from the pans without having to scrub the surface, especially with the quality of Schminke Watercolors. You will be able to paint without cringing at the thought of ruining your fine point. It makes a HUGE difference. Hope I was able to help. Happy painting!

Thank you! Just a quick point -- Acid-free is a term usually applied to a wood pulp paper (or mix) which means the naturally occurring acids have been buffered. The problem is that no one knows how long the buffering will last and the acids will become active again. Better to go all cotton if you can afford it, there is no acid at all. Just watch out for that 'acid-free' label, it's a marketing term used more and more.

First, thanks so much for that. My set of 24 half pans is on the way and I'm really excited. This has probably already been mentioned a dozen times before, but regarding the Manganese Violet... granulation is one of the 4 or so 'primary characteristics' of watercolors, along with transparency, staining/non-staining, and lightfastness. Each color has its own, unique character depending on how it expresses these four characteristics in its formulation. Some colors granulate, some don't. Some manufacturers indicate which of their colors granulate, most don't. Daniel Smith, for example does. And they have a ton of granulating colors! I really love them :)

In addition to misting your paints, you may want to twirl your brush instead of scrubbing (side to side). This will allow you to pick up color in the small pans and is a good practice even with larger pans. It also preps your brush to a point, ready for more detailed work. Really enjoyed your video, thanks so much for all of the great info. (production and quality of paint).

About that grainy texture thing, its called granulation, and the colour that is famous for it - I think - is the ultramarine (except schminke for some reason). Some artists hate it but some love it. So yeah. :)

Granulation is good! The grainy characteristic is something you can learn to appreciate. It gives beautiful texture to a painting, but you can use a staining shade if you want that flatter look. The Manganese Violet is behaving exactly as it is meant to be.

Ohw yes to this, do take your time learning to work with these, it is worth it, it took me some months getting used to them if you have issues with this violet get the dioxine violet - it is soooo pretty, it is a really intense purple. Have your tried Holbein? Its a japanese brand. One notable difference is that the grains are really fine. The transparency is amazing when it dries the paper texture just pops. It will not cover line work especially when ink is used. I tried sennelier and daniel smith, i went back to Holbein for those difference. The downside with holbein i do notice it tends to bloom streaks in the absence of ox gall in the formulation.

Manganese Violet is very is PV16. It is this way in every brand. Its a "manganese ammonium pyrophosphate", which was developed by E. Leykauf in 1868 as a replacement for the more expensive cobalt violet, but not offered as an artists' pigment until 1890. It is a moderately saturated, granulating, semitransparent and nonstaining purple, not as intense as the cobalts or modern synthetic organic violets, but very lightfast, and available in several brands of watercolor paints. The Cerulean Blue tone "a peacock blue" the true Cyan Blue you see in printers, is made with pigments PB15:3-Phthalo Blue and a touch of PW4-Zinc White to lighten it a bit. Not enough to make it opaque. Real Cerulean Blue is opaque. The " e " at the end of Schmincke in English is silent. In German it has " uh' sound. ;-)
@AndiDesigner8 жыл бұрын
+Renee Moles-Marks Thank you, I wondered how to pronounce Schmincke properly ;)
@renmuffett8 жыл бұрын
You are most welcome. Its impossible to know how to pronounce it by just reading it. I only know because when I went to workshop with Susan Harrison-Tustain, watercolor artist from New Zealand, she told our class. Schmincke is her choice of brand.
@AndiDesigner8 жыл бұрын
Renee Moles-Marks Yeah, and I just watched a German artist working with them, and she pronounces it SchminkUH.....its just so guttural sounding to us here, eh? Hehe But English is close to the German language, so I'm sure I can get it right ;)

+LeMarais88 You can take out the pans and slightly push down the clamps holding them and click them back into place. They will be tightly secured. :D
@AndiDesigner8 жыл бұрын
+LeMarais88 If I remember correctly, I either didn't "open them", or I bent the metal closed a tiny bit and then snapped them into place....
@UTleochi8 жыл бұрын
+Andi Design (Andesign) The trick is to bend the metal a little bit more than you normally would, and to put in the pan by placing the side facing to the front (the side you can see), and to push the pan down. It wil click into place easily.

what do u mean by schiminke uses one pigment only to make all these colors?
@miguel54096 жыл бұрын
They mostly use only one pigment for each paint. For example, Ultramarine blue has only one pigment, which is PB28/PB29. Single pigment paints are easier to mix because they are much unlikely to get muddy mixes

are these higher quality than winsor and newton cotman student grade paint?
@OhJodi695 жыл бұрын
Student paints are always a lower quality than professional or artist grade paints. Cotman paint is an excellent quality of student paints, though. However, after your first set of student paints, you really should move on to professional. Student colors do not mix correctly with other colors. This is because while professional colors are mostly single-pigment, student colors are often a blend, and when you try to mix colors together, the student paints will often give you different, and even "muddy", color mixes. Watch professional paint reviews, shop around for prices, and find the professional paint that will work best for you. Some of the top brands are Schmincke, Daniel Smith, M. Graham, Rembrandt, and Winsor & Newton Professional.

WOW this review was PERFECT! On the same level as Owing's Art reviews! hahah, and he's good!! :P This was a fantastic thoroughly entertaining & informative review! & you sure did make those Schmincke colors look GOOD! Darn it! haha. I am trying to talk myself OUT of getting a Schmincke set, & rather, I want to invest in Sennelier, LUKAS, W&N, or Holbein. & I'm really unsure of whether or not I want tubes or pans. See, I am not your traditional artist... I do fantasy work. I like to make art in the style of Dungeon's and Dragon's & Magic-The-Gathering Trading cards. Intricate, Surrealist Monsters & Wizards. I also enjoy Children's Book, Comic-Strip, & Manga/Anime Illustration. So I am actually looking for a Watercolor that can handle this type of artwork. I like brilliant, VIBRANT, solid, no-streaks-no-brushmark, semi-opaque washes. (Which is why I am not sure if I should invest in WC or Gouache! But I am leaning toward Watercolors because I LOVE the way they handle, especially when I DO decide I want to do a fine-art landscape, portrait, or general painting. I love WC, but I also llllove the look of Opaque Gouache, and creamy Colored Pencil Illustrations are lust-worthy (IMO) as-well. :P UGH! Chasing-down supplies is TOUGH when you've got a tax-return burning your pockets. I am going to take it slow & make sure I KNOW what medium I want most. DO you happen to have any experience with any of the above mentioned Watercolor brands? Sennelier? Holbein? Lukas? Windsor&Newton-Artist? How about TURNER watercolors, from JerrysArtarama? I am curious about all of these. I was given advice to go with Sennelier over Lukas if I can afford to.... But I've heard Lukas is closer in vibrancy to Schmincke than Sennelier, and that Sennelier is more toned-down for landscape/portraiture artwork. Any opinions on this subject? I apologize if you haven't got the experience with the above mentioned brands, haha. I don't want to waste anyone's time! I know how precious and valuable time is! :P Hopefully someone will read this & help me out eventually. I-AM-STRUGGLING!
@AndiDesigner8 жыл бұрын
+DontLeaveMeLucile OK I do have some advice for you ....what I would say is get yourself a small watercolour set that's traditional consisting of only the base colours (like red blue and yellow) you could mix ANY colour from those three so you don't have to spend a lot of money. Let me tell you something, you don't have to spend the money to get Schmincke, I like my Kuretake watercolours just as much, and I think you'd love the Mijello Mission, they look amazing! So, just get a small primary set with purple to start, so you can mix all colours (if you don't have money to get a full basic set) Then, for your fantasy and illustration work, I would say go with what the experts in the field do and I do believe they use inks and/or gouache, the inks you can lay down and they won't move so let's say that could be your first outline of the characters and then you could use the gouache and watercolours to do glazes as they would move around. So you would have your opaque gouache set of many colours (or inks) and you would gave your basic 3-6 watercolours for those times you need a painterly look, and you can mix whatever colour you need from those primary 3. I don't know, just some stuff to think about.....I'm not sure about your full situation, lol ☺️
@AndiDesigner8 жыл бұрын
+DontLeaveMeLucile I heard that the brightest watercolours are Holbein, and I am stunned at how bright (almost luminous neon!) my W&N inks are.....so if you want bright, look into those. Also know that if you want to go opaque.....that tones down the luminosity you get (that's why I don't use gouache). Also, look into Ph Martin's.....they are also super bright and luminous! Again, I'm on the verge of buying a set of those, for me, it's between ph martin's and Mijello Mission that I'm about to get a set of......depends on if Mijello will send me a set or not 😆 But I will be doing a review on one of those next

Actually watercolors with honey as a binder/vehicle isn‘t too fitting for filling from tubes into pans, because the paint can be quite runny and take more time to dry. For example M. Graham, Sennelier and St. Petersburg White Nights. Also Winsor & Newton does say that their tube watercolor paint shoudn‘t be used to fill up pans or to dry on a pallete, because their tube paint is differently formulated than the pan paint. It‘s specifically made to use wet out of the tube.
@OhJodi695 жыл бұрын
Some dry harder, and can be difficult to re-wet.

I think the reason you are not seeing similar granulation in the Ultramarine finest is precisely because Schmincke realized that for blues and (and skies for most part) granulation is not really a thing you would appreciate. I think is the only company to have a non aggressively Ultramarine. Kudos to them for that and to you for a nice video 😉 (though c'mon you should now what granulation is 😁)

thanks, you see that once you use the pans you can replace 24 half pans by 12 full pans, the colors are also ostrov double. Regarding the way you prepare swatches try to use the body of the brush, not only the tip, and try to keep the brush on the paper longer with more water, this way you will ruin your brushes less quickly. buy sables the squirrel brushes are almost as expensive and not so good. try artist teacher Charles reid educational tapes.
