I so appreciate sharing tips and ideas. One comment, though: I had my volume up all the way and it was still hard to hear you. But thank you and keep the videos coming! We need all the help and support we can get!

Do you still use this system? the only thing I'd worry about is the log not being confidential if students are writing their own names on the list.

I really want to get advice! U look happy with what you do and I would love to know how you started your career path to a school counselor. What tips do you have ?

I am happy. I love my job! I started by getting a BS in Psychology and my masters in Education: Counseling and Guidance. In grad school, I had three internships and that's where I learned the most. Then I applied for public schools through the county portal. See if you can shadow a counselor for the day to see if you like it and go from there.

Do you have a masters degree? What is it in? So that you are able to do group and individual counseling also? Are you certified to do mental health with the degree?

Most masters degrees for school counseling is either a MA or MS in educational school counseling. Some states will require a credential along with a master's degree. In California a pupil personnel services credential is required. Yes you can do individual and group counseling with a MA or MS in this field. Although, you will be doing light social and emotional counseling, anything beyond that you need to either refer them to the school psychologist or a mental health therapist. No, you shouldn't practice therapy on your students. There is not enough time in the day for that and you will also drive yourself crazy at some point. Always refer out if its above your scope of practice. This is also for liability reasons as well. 🙂

I have a MA in Education: Counseling and Guidance. I also have a PPS credential from California. I do group and individual counseling but in a short-term solution-focused manner appropriate for a school setting. I refer to other mental health professionals when necessary. The ASCA website, schoolcounselor.org, has a lot of helpful information about the role of the school counselor.
