That's a very good question! I personally don't know, so I asked a friend about it. I'll get back to you on that when he responds.

So, you aren't the only one asking this question. Fire safety professionals are also wondering the same question, so research is likely to be done on the subject in the near future. In the meantime, they recommend a partial (evacuating the part of the building being affected by the fire) or phased evacuation sequence (evacuating in "chunks", first the affected, then towards areas that are not affected) to maintain social distancing during fire drills. These tend to be more complex, but in many cases it will get the job done.

Bousai Guy for us they just did it like normal but everyone of course had to have their masks on and they only had us physically distanced only maybe 3 feet apart.

So my school for the first time decided to use the drill button for our fire drill a few weeks ago... it drove me insane! Half of the alarms weren’t sounding, fire doors weren’t closing, the emergency exits didn’t drop causing all of them to emit a screeching sound when opened, and overall it was horrible yet we heard that might be the standard way for fire drills to be performed now. The entire second floor doesn’t go off and only one hallway on the first floor had alarms sounding so most of the building you won’t notice until they make the announcement. I don’t know what to say or do to stop this practice but there isn’t really anything I can do at this point but I just want the use of the drill button to end!

Bring the concern to your school administration. My old school was experiencing a similar issue. Whenever the push the drill button, we would have certain alarms go off and not others. They would flash but no sound and none of the voice evacs would go off either. I brought this to not only my schools attention but the district as well as the state fire marshal and they are now activating the pull stations for each drill.

I agree with @Follower Of Christ with this one - bring the situation up to the administration. It's best practice for drills to simulate everything that what actually happens in an emergency.

Same. Our high school got renovated a year ago and in some rooms the strobes would flash but no sound. They told me they use a pull station for fire drills so something might be wrong then///

02:42 The Intercom alarm sounds right before he pulls the fire alarm meaning that the Intercom system and the fire alarm system aren't tied together. This means that the Intercom alarm sounded by taking the phone off the holder and pressing buttons (in which the tone in sounded by entering #32*) on the keypad and is stopped by putting the phone back on the holder. It would be cool to have the Intercom alarm sound when the fire alarm goes off and the Intercom alarm will stop when the system is reset but its not done at this school because it would take alot longer to set up which is why the Intercom alarm is turned on and turned off manually. The Intercom that the school had is a Rauland Telecenter ICS and the alarm tone is a Fast Warble tone.

It's to notify trailers. The trailer fire alarm systems are not connected since they're separate from the building.

They have, in fact, been conducting drills while we've been virtual (for faculty who's working there). I'll be going to in-person school soon, so I'll have to see what it's like.

I back in in person school and I am doing drills probably on Thursday or Friday because I only go 2 days a week and it’s drill week and I Hope the fire drill happens at lunch or somethin 😃😀😐🤔

Hi Bousai guy i haven't had a fire drill in a long time but now that I live in a group home I feel a little bit nervous about having a fire drill how can I relax during a fire drill I know that I get afraid of fire drills but I need to learn about my safety and be safe but I am scared because I don't know when it's going to happen but I'll be ready when it happens I have a fobia of loud noises but I need to get over them

If the problem is due to the unexpected onset of the alarm, you could use headphones to block out the sound. There may be times when they may be allowed to warn you in advance. If you see your security or custodial personnel enter your dorm, watching them activate the pull station may help too. Of course if they have one while you’re asleep, it’s kinda hard to predict in advance but if you hear walkie talkies or keys Clinging that might give you a clue. When I was in high school and lived in a group home, one of our security officers would come in our house around 5 o’clock in the morning. As soon as he would turn on his radio and heard him open the pull station, the strobes would flash a few times, then the horns would start then we would get out of bed and evacuate. Thankfully, they only did that four times a year. Try to remember that the purpose of a fire drill is to see if the building can be evacuated in a quick and orderly manner in the event of an actual fire. Hope this helps.

I’ve always wanted to work in the field of fire but I always get turned away due to medical problems. I have epilepsy and they say it could put myself and others in danger on scene. Kinda annoying!!! I love the video though!!!!!!!!

I am in Aikin elementary at Richardson I had a fire drill this week. why do they have fire drills? Mine sound like a police car siren 3 times then the lady on the loudspeakers saying the fire alarm has been activated please exit near the nearest door to YOUR classroom. Then the alarm Continues.

I was rewatching this video and noticed that an emergency exit stairway had an inward pulling door at the ground... how is that allowed? If there were people rushing down the stairs trying to open the door they wouldn’t be able to if everyone was pushing on it. Where I live all doors must open outwards not to mention the requirement of panic bars on high risk doors like that. I find this very strange to be honest.

I didn’t realize this. Did they block an exit off during that drill? I heard the custodian yelling people would get burnt up. Of the ten fire drills we would have each year when I went to school, at least one of them an exit was blocked and we would have to find another way out of the building. The first time they did it everybody was wondering where the alternate routes were and our security chief would point out other exits and tell us other ways out. I honestly think it makes the drills more closer to the real thing. If everyone just used the same exit every time and nobody else knows other ways out, that’s not too good in my opinion.

Hi there. Just a few questions. Did you activate the alarm or did the custodian? I don’t have good vision so can’t tell. Also why was the custodian not happy about the lady announcing the drill beforehand? I know in some cases they notify everyone of the first drill then the rest of them are unannounced. Thanks. Also, doesn’t this building have voice evac somewhere? Thought it did but didn’t hear it in the background like I sometimes do. Thanks.

I activated the alarm this month. As for the preannouncement, I'm honestly not sure - I think it was something we haven't done in a long time. I do recall him mentioning that the people weren't going to take it seriously (which, granted we're 7 months into school is reasonable). This building does have voice evac, however it's only in the areas of assembly (i.e. the gyms, cafeteria, and fine arts buildings). If we get back into the building, I'll try to get to record some of the voice evac alarms, but that might be a bit of a task.

But we will be conducting a fire drill at the hospital I work at in May, and the Safety manager told me I could pull the alarm and open the pull station. Never pulled one because I know it’s illegal unless you have permission. Looking forward to it.
