These bring back such great memories of eating cereal on the floor in our pj's, promising not to spill. It was the only time it was allowed. Oh, and when the TV Guide said Wizard of Oz was on we could eat, sitting on the floor, mom made popcorn and sometimes we got to have Shasta soda, too. We usually got to v do the same at least once on nights during Xmas cartoons all painstakingly highlighted and triple checked by the eldest, moi. Typically Xmas Eve on Sesame Street, then later for a Muppet Xmas Carol. Sorry. Good memories. 😊

Colonies: "No more kings, George". Starts an insurrection, fights a revolution war of independence United States: "Hey, George. Wanna be a king? No? Well, I guess we'll just start a government that is fundamentally and functionally the same as a king but with many kings and we'll have a suggestion box called "voting" for the subjects to give them the impression their wishes and freedom matter".

The colonists needed imported goods. Their beef wasn't just the tax, but the fact that they had no representation in GB. In the long run it turned out they didn't need the British.

Love how people overly criticize this. Given that these used to be commercials, they go a LONG way. A modern cartoon would never show the actual geography of the colonies, much less put history to music. But, OKAY, go on arguing on how they are propagandists because they didn't fit a American History till 1865 class into 3 minutes for kids.

The colonists weren't mad because of the financial burden of the taxes themselves, they were upset because they were taxed by a Parliament in which the colonists had no say, hence "No taxation without representation". Furthermore, the colonists felt that they were entitled to "life, liberty and property". Taxation without representation was theft and therefore denied the colonists right to property. Trust me, I got a 5 on the AP US History exam

Well, no. That's even more simple than the song. These disgustingly wealthy landowners didn't want to pay taxes so they got the poor people riled up to fight a war for them

Actually England was taxing the colonies less then they were taxing the people who were actually living in Britian, and the only reason they were taxing the US was because the colonist had gotten into the French and Indian War further putting Great Britian into debt to save the colonies butts.
@fjccommish
@fjccommish 12 жыл бұрын
What were the reasons? The colonists' reasons were that they were tired of the British government raising taxes on them and treating them poorly in other ways. They fought a war, and America won. The colonists created a Constitution and concept for a nation that led America to become the most prosperous nation in the world. That isn't biased. That's history.
@shamgar001
@shamgar001 12 жыл бұрын
The song certainly oversimplifies, but because it treats the revolution as exclusively related to taxes, rather than numerous other rights violations perpetrated by the crown, such as letting British troops write their own search warrants.
@gravitytwo4088

Yes, taxes was just one thing of many. And to give context about the taxes, with the video showing King George surrounded by tons of coin, he had just spent a ton of coin fighting the French in the colonies to keep the colonies from being taken over by the French. He was looking to tax the colonies to get some of that money back. He should've just sold some crown jewels!

The best thing Britain could have done was give the colonies parliamentary representation. In the end they decided to, but they'd dragged their heels for so long it was too late. If they were a bit quicker on the uptake, I can imagine a much bigger United Kingdom than the one we know today.

The historian in me: well, I mean, the king did need to raise taxes to recover from the expenses of the 7 Years’ War, which was fought (in large part) to protect American colonists from France. It’s not really unfair to expect them to foot the bill for it. Also, the Americans had been living under what historians call “salutary neglect”, which the colonists ruined for themselves. The kid in me: 🎵🎶🎵ROCKIN AND A ROLLIN, SPLISHIN AND A SPLASHIN OVER THE HORIZON WHAT CAN IT BE🎵🎶🎵

@captainjules6033
@captainjules6033 Жыл бұрын
@@susanmckenzie5700 yeah but the proclamation of 1763 is more complicated than “the Brits just didn’t wanna give the Americans their due”. For one thing, the reason that happened was because the colonists had just fought a war with a ton of native people and disallowing further expansion was supposed to (and did) ease tensions between natives and colonists. Also, why does it matter? The biggest win of the 7 Years’ War for the British colonists was no longer having a hostile and competing empire right next door, the land itself wasn’t that big a deal, most of the land the Brits already was still undeveloped
@dorkydrummer95
@dorkydrummer95 11 жыл бұрын
Yes, being taxed causes social instability but England itself was in a economic depression and needed the extra income. The colonist were taxed significantly less than those in English borders and were only being forced to pay the raised taxes because of defiance against the Crown to not pass into French territory after the French and Indian war though population growth had increased exponentially. We, as Americans, don't like to teach that in all we caused the tyranny by creating border wars.
@gravitytwo4088
@gravitytwo4088 Жыл бұрын
Nope, we didn't "cause the tyranny", as the British crown had a long long long history of tyranny before this. I get that they wanted their money back from fighting the wars, but that's no excuse for tyranny. King George was just a lousy King, as others have gone before and figured these things out to be more into justice minded. They did give us the Magna Carta. (And note that Democrat judges are squashing principals in that treaty, prinicples that go back to Rome - they are denying Trump "Client/Attorney" priviledge (privacy between a client and his lawer). We are in a banana republic now, with kangaroo courts - don't vote Democrat!

Amanda you could explain why you think this version isn't right, by that I mean your referral to Great Britain putting restrictions on colonies....please by all means elaborate! If you haven't read in you AP class by now, nobody likes to be taxed to death, and tyranny is always something to avoid... So that in of itself is the reason for our break from the crown and mother land....

A Grandmother in her 60's was sentenced last week to 15 months in jail, previously had an ankle monitor on her while she was confined to house arrest for 2.5 years before initually spending 6 months or so in jail AND has now been told she will forever be on the "terror watch list" as a terrorist ("domestic terrorist"). Yes, she is offically a terrorist according to the USA federal government? Her crime? She went to protest at the Capitol on 1/6/21 and then walked into the Captitol (also called "The People's House") for 20 minutes and then left. She never touched anyone (except for the natural "touching in a crowd") and she didn't hurt anything or anyone. Through tears, she and her family begged the foriegn-born, Obama-appointed district D.C. judge to NOT give her any further punishment, but the gave her 15 months in jail. We are a Stalin-like banana republic with kangaroo courts now.
