@@dayday2wops It is true; there truly is little, if any, difference. You must’ve graduated during the Bush Administration. Childhood obesity was rampant because back then, school food was cheap and loaded with fat and sodium. Once Obama came along, they tried making things “healthy” but in reality they just cut the salt out of everything, cut your portions, and make everything by just tossing in a convection oven. Both were bad for kids, but at least I enjoyed school food during Bush’s tenure

Manny DeFelice Tomato is a fruit in botanical terms - it grows on a tree - well - a plant that resembles a tree - but I would never serve it up as fruit - rhubarb is actually a vegetable, as it grows in the ground - but I would never serve it as if it was a vegetable - to meet with the relevant agency standards, fruit and veg are all the same, anyway! Two out of three arguments might classify tomatoes as a vegetable - the three arguments are botanical, culinary and animal, vegetable, mineral - botanically speaking, it's a fruit, as fruit grows on a tree, plant or vine (what are classified botanically as vegetables grow in the ground - usually in soil); in culinary terns, it's usually classified as a vegetable, as it is usually served with savoury products - although you can put apple sauce and cranberry sauce on a roast - and they are fruit; the third argument - everything on the planet is animal, vegetable or mineral - in those terms, even oranges, bananas and grapes are vegetable - they aren't animal, as I have yet to see those things move around and converse with each other (outside the realms of cartoons and children's books) and mineral includes rocks and boulders - although leave some fruit and veg on the shelf too long and it becomes mineral! Even liquid is mineral on that basis! BTW, I am not a scientist - I did science at school - but that doesn't make me a scientist - I did woodwork and metalwork at school - but that doesn't make me a carpenter or metallurgist - played with Lego and Meccano as a boy - but that doesn't make me a builder or a construction engineer!

Although $1.50/student doesn't sound like much, it's actually a pretty generous portion especially when you're buying in bulk. Jamie Oliver did a program on the crap that the kids in Britain's public schools were eating. He was given a budget of 37 pence (roughly 54 cents USA) per student but it was incredibly difficult to prepare good, healthy lunches on that. He went to Italy and there, they spend roughly the equivalent of 90 pence/student (roughly $1.30 US) and that included the students being fed organic pasta, olive oil, quality cheeses, bruchetta along with a fruit and/or vegetable each day. 20 cents more per student might not sound like a lot but again, when you're doing it in bulk, it should make a big difference. The fact that these students in the States still don't seem to be eating very healthy food says that something's not adding up here. Why don't the schools start growing their own fruits and vegetables? There are some schools that have raised garden beds on the roofs of the schools. This could easily supplement the dietary requirements and teach the kids about where our produce actually comes from.
@hperrio8 жыл бұрын
I think thats a great idea. There's a school in my area that does do this. It teaches kids so much. Do you think typical American kids would eat it though? I feel like we have more of a home issue here. Parents tend to let their kids have poptarts and cocoa puffs for breakfast, lol. I'd hate to see my nephew served an apple and some oatmeal. He's too spoiled to the processed stuff already. Parents are too.
@01Mary028 жыл бұрын
Galaxy Rhen I know, that's the problem. Too many kids eat garbage at home because neither mom or dad knows how to cook. I guess we were from the last generation of kids who knew what a home-cooked meal was. With that said, I still think if they would bring back Home Economics, take kids out to farms, TEACH them something beyond computers and then have the schools grow their own produce, we might be able to put a dent in reversing out horrendous food culture.

I don't think the taxpayers should have to pay for someone else's kid. Get a fucking job and quit being a deadbeat.

Elvis, Shaq and Emily Ah, too young to understand the value of hard work yet you feel compelled to lecture others on how to spend their money. The product of the liberal education system... By the way, how young are you? Many "underage" teens have jobs.
@JustACoverStory.8 жыл бұрын
+KiloByte sorry my age is something you don't need to know but let's just say I do understand hard work probably more than you and no I do not lecture people on how to spend there money so don't talk bad about someone before you know them
@KiloByte698 жыл бұрын
Elvis, Shaq and Emily You just said the "school" (i.e. taxpayers) should pay for the food, so yes you are lecturing. I bet you're old enough to have a job, so don't give me that nonsense excuse.

School lunches should be free, I know that's impossible, but it's my opinion. Why make kids go to school if you don't feed them. Do prisoners pay for their meal in jail everyday or is it free for them? 😒

@adamstewart78568 жыл бұрын
Lukas gröndahl Well, considering I'm from the UK where school meals are similar to home-cooked meals, that doesn't apply to me, when I was little, an average meal consisted of bread, as well as a meal of your choice, usually for me being a roast dinner type thing with potatoes, beef, gravy and vegetables as well as a cake and custard; I find it a bit strange that the Finnish don't have a hot meal everyday?
