The whole "getting stares" for ethnic food resonates with me, as an Indian American, so hard; my mom used to send me Indian food for lunch at school, because the food at school was unhealthy and my mom believed in eating home-cooked food as a value. People used to make fun of my food, and I still remember that my mom would tell me, "You eat what I give you, and remember that not everyone has someone to make food for them like I do for you." A lot of the experiences that you've talked about with your family resonate with me even though I'm not Latino. I just wanted to say keep at it.

We were spoiled at my parochial school. The cafeteria was staffed by a bunch of retired Italian ladies who founded, ran, or were still running, their own restaurants. I didn't know what people meant by bad school lunch until I got to high school.

From 6th grade on I went to school in PR and it was rice almost everyday. It was good but it gets to a point where you hate rice. My son now goes to a PR school and when he asks me to make him lunch O do it without complaining because I can remember eating arroz con salchicha en school then going home and my mom made the exact same thing.

In elementary/middle school I ate the school lunch that consisted of chicken tenders with cheese or my favorite the squared fried fish with cheese (ugh soo good) or bringing a brown bag with a sandwich on the crappy burger days. But oh I though I was the shit when I hit high school and they had papa johns pizza (it was a fresh concept back in the days)or we would take off to a burger joint down the road during 11th n 12th grade .... ahhh the memories of ditching 3 n 4th period during 11th grade then co-op during senior year!!! And yes I graduated lol, it pays to have smart friends 😉.

I went to elementary school in Mexico. My mom never even made me lunch. She'd hand me 20 pesos right before getting me off the car at the corner and be like te compras algo sano. I'd always get molletes ir quesadillas. When we moved to Canada she started making me lunch and she somehow got 10 times more mexican as you do when you're not in your country. I had chilaquiles once and sometimes she'd pack tortillas in a little bag

Growing I mostly ate the school lunches because both my parents were working, I mean I knew how to prepare lunch for myself but let's face it I'd rather sleep in those 10 extra minutes than prep a lunch. Anyway I remember I used to make this pasta ravioli dish (not from a can) and I would bring it to school I kid you not every time I would bring it one of my former friends would unpack it for me and eat the entire thing while I was talking to another friend! It got to the point where if I was going to make that I would make some for her also but she would end up eating both of our portions! I figured she was just hungry but so was I.

My mom wanted to assimilate so I got "normal" stuff. My mom would actually pack me TWO sandwiches made with turkey and American singles, nutri-grain bars(my fave) and a Capri Sun(my parents called them Poches). When I got a little older, I remember actually cooking my own lunch once for the next day. It was a pork chop sandwich. Yum yum. The few times I had to walk home from school, my mom would meet me with a snack(usually frozen strawberries) and I remember being sooooo embarrassed that my mom was meeting me to walk home. Man, I was an ungrateful kid. I did, however, like when my parents had an errand or an appointment right after I got out of school. My mom would always bring me a freshly made bowl of arroz con papas and some ranchera or a chuleta.

Love your videos!! Love you!! And growing up I was embarrassed to take homemade lunch and I didn't like the food from school either so I just to starve all day until I got home. However, in my junior year in high school, I really wanted and MP3 player and my parents wouldn't buy it for me. So since they used to give me $5 for school for the whole week lol I started bringing my own lunch and saving those $5 bucks lol long story short asta el día de hoy i take my homemade meal to work and funny enough I still get the looks as if I was still in high school!! Ooh well I'm not rich to buy food everyday lol

Growing up I went to catholic school, my mom was the lunch lady... There is a smell that all catholic schools have that is a mixture of rehydrated powdered mashed potatoes, some sort of meat in gravy, and over steamed veggies. I will never forget that smell. I ate school lunch every day unless we were going on a field trip. My dad use to always chaperon because my mom had to stay at the school. I was spoilt, I got lunchables, left over cold pizza, some times even soda. I was never the cool kid expect when my little igloo lunch box was filled with grape Swedish fish and pizza.

I'd beg my mom for Lunchables & fruit gushers so I could be cool (even at home too). I even had my mom buy me a lunchbox so I could pretend like real school. Communications technology was my favorite class since all we did was play quake 2 or UT2 on LAN. On free periods i would go under a different alias in the Mik'maq counselor's room (a place for the reservation kids to go for help) and hear people cuss my alter ego out across the hall. We used to get bagged milk when i was in grade Primary for lunch (P-12) because Canada (Bagged milk being a thing up here, and the company that made the milk also sold juice in bags of bagged juice). PB&J was the main course until i could make my own sandwiches, my mother used to make them until grade 2. I used to have the typical fruits, boxed raisins, those packages of cheese and crackers. In elementary they would have "hotdog day" on fridays, and "pizza days" on wednesdays. Junior high days we had pizza days, and mainly homemade foods from a canteen (i miss the hot chicken sandwiches) since i went to the same schools my parents went to. Senior High those schools got replaced by a building designed by an architect who designed prisons, also the cafeteria company was a subsidiary for a company that had all the prison contracts. But the food was modern for a canadian standard, so i would work at a tobacco shop to afford my appetite for poutines, ceasar wraps and pizza wraps.

Back home in Portugal food was awesome and always cooked. The schools provided it! Private catholic schools that parents pay according to their salaries ( poorer people pay less). Friday's was always fish and Wednesday's we had fried egg, ham, French fries, white rice and salad. That was my favorite. We always had to eat soup and sandwiches were snacks that we would take to school as mid morning and mid afternoon snacks.

Omg,you just brought back horrible memories of my school lunch.I would pack my own.My mother made this brown whole wheat bread like a brick, you had to slice yourself, and in my Italian /slavic household we always had an enormous array of stinky cheeses and garlicky cold cuts, you can just start visualizing this, with the sound effects.Kids would tease me almost to tears because of the weird stinky food, and the worce part was the after effects of all the garlic.By the time I got to high-school I learned how to pack better lunches, but couldn't eat school lunch,it was just too gross.

I would mostly eat school lunches, the milk parket at my school was weird it came in a little baggie and you had to poke a hole through it to drink it, and if you didn't do it right the milk with spread out throughout the table so all the other kids would hate you. but sometimes I would bring a ham cheese torta, if we didn't have sandwich bread at home. And a jar of juice, because for some reason someone always forgot to buy a juice packet.

Man looking back I used to get teased a lot for carrying lunch. To this day I prefer to eat alone or with a few close friends, if I am in public. Mom gave us bread and cheese, peanut butter sandwiches, mango juice, cool aid, mac and cheese, porridge or whatever else she could find. In Jamaica at that time poor kids carried lunch. I used to cry but when I got to high school I realised that many of the kids teasing me didnt have parents who cared about what they ate or even if they ate. Thanks Mom. Ps. One day that mango juice melted and leaked out the bottle, everything smelled sour and turned yellow. Books, uniform and bag😂

In elementary school (kindergarden till 3rd grade) I always ate lunch from the cafeteria. Wednesdays were my favorite days because it was pizza day until sometime in middle school when the pizza was made differently and disgustingly. But there were times that I brought my own lunch made by my mom or she could bring lunch from a local pizza/sub place and eat it with me at the cafeteria (this only happened in 4th & 5th grade and those were the good times).

Oh my goodness! You look just like Spinelli! When I was a kid, it was all about Lisa Frank ( Lunch Box, Notebooks, Folders, Stickers you name it, I had them). My school lunch at least in elementary school, on Fridays it was baked potato day but when I would sleep over at my Abuela Mercedes' house my favorite childhood dish was Arroz con Huevos Fritos. Everyone at school looked at me weird when I would tell them that was my favorite food😊

I used to love hot dog wrapped in a flour tortilla. Another favorite was cold beans in a flour tortilla. This was back in the 80s. We didn't have fancy Tupperware back then. Haha

I'm first generation American, (my father is from Poland) and sometimes I would bring Polish ethnic foods and kids would always want to try it lol. The school food was actually nasty, so most kids brought home lunches.

Is deviled ham something other Cubans eat or was that just my family? My mother says that when they arrived from Cuba and discovered that (along with other canned foods) they were so fascinated and fell in love

Vienna sausages! Haha! I've always wondered where else in the world they were "common." Yes. This too was a convenient lunch food I'd see in the Philippines before. Some even treated it as a fancier option to Spam (rather, the cheaper Chinese Mah-Ling) or corned beef.

any day of the week , any place we went Disneyland , the park , friends BBQs..... we had a cooler of a million foil wrapped burritos with eggs and beans . ALWAYS. I had decided on shitty school food early on. We moved a lot (army dad) so I had enough things to worry about . Left them at home!

Growing up, my tia would make mine and my prima's lunches which consisted of arroz with frijoles, frijoladas, tamales, un sandwich with heuvo con salchicha, and if she was generous maybe un gelatina or arroz con leche, but when I moved to Texas when I was twelve, I came downstairs to find instead of a prepared lunch ready to go, I find a 10 dollar bill and note from my mom saying to make the money last the entire week. Let's just say I lost the weight I gained from my from not eating my Tia's lunches made for me.

At least Jenny grew up in Miami not so long ago... I grew up half Cuban and half Gallega, in NJ, in a Catholic school full of mostly Irish kids... Bringing a choripan brought a lot of looks, I also would bring grelos with garlic and olive oil... I was bullied for it. It was nuts!!!

In third grade, I used to get homemade lunches that contained ham and cheese sandwiches, but my mom would always forget to add the little freezer block to keep the lunch cool. By lunch time- the ham and mayonnaise were all warm and gross!! I flat out refused to eat it! Lol after complaining about it and she realized I was just wasting food, I got a lunch box with a built-in cooler block and the sandwiches were good again lol.

I always had to bring my lunch because it wasn't provided in my catholic school and since I wasn't a big eater my (Cuban) abuela would make me this potaje I would bring in a *gasp* thermos to school everyday. Let's just say it was a thick soup concoction made of meat vegetables and god knows what else but It was the only thing I would eat and I loved it. She took the best care of me and wanted to make sure I would eat. And of course I got the ewwwww what's that or that smells comment. I would never say that to someone but some kids are just super cruel and nasty. Anywho that's my dos centavos! Love you yenny!

I'm Jamaican but I used 2 eat lunchables cuz my family all worked a lot cuz we were fresh from Jamaica just coming to America but after about 2 years of supermarket food came in the Jamaican food cuz I was not gonna frickin' eat them school lunchesbdo I brought in the Vienna sausage between bread or just Vienna sasauge in a container, some curry(insert any meat here) with rice, some ox tail with rice, and other Jamaican food and I would always have some fruit like apple, banana, orange, and in some instance mango or pear (avocado) and u know I was livin' for that mango and pear (avocado) sometimes I would have dessert like sugar bun, pudding, black cake, chubby, milo, those nestle blue cans with the really sweet creamy drink, sorrel and I remember one time I brought some black cake with me and the whole cafeteria smelled like rum and the teachers were trying to find out where the smell came from and they finally noticed it was my food and they were telling me to throw it away because they thought it was alcoholic so I'm half way done with my block of black cake and she they were talking to me I looked at them stuck my fork inside the remainder of the block and put it in my mouth and ate it they just stared at me and were panicking and telling me to spit it out and telling me to open my mouth so when I was finished and swallowed it I opened my mouth and it smelled like rum and they were freaking out and called my mom and my mom explained and then a fellow Caribbean teacher came in and explained some more and I got scolded by the teacher and my mom but I didn't care....so.....😐
