The whole "getting stares" for ethnic food resonates with me, as an Indian American, so hard; my mom used to send me Indian food for lunch at school, because the food at school was unhealthy and my mom believed in eating home-cooked food as a value. People used to make fun of my food, and I still remember that my mom would tell me, "You eat what I give you, and remember that not everyone has someone to make food for them like I do for you." A lot of the experiences that you've talked about with your family resonate with me even though I'm not Latino. I just wanted to say keep at it.

Anyway I remember I used to make this pasta ravioli dish (not from a can) and I would bring it to school I kid you not every time I would bring it one of my former friends would unpack it for me and eat the entire thing while I was talking to another friend! It got to the point where if I was going to make that I would make some for her also but she would end up eating both of our portions! I figured she was just hungry but so was I.

My mom wanted to assimilate so I got "normal" stuff. My mom would actually pack me TWO sandwiches made with turkey and American singles, nutri-grain bars(my fave) and a Capri Sun(my parents called them Poches). When I got a little older, I remember actually cooking my own lunch once for the next day. It was a pork chop sandwich. Yum yum. The few times I had to walk home from school, my mom would meet me with a snack(usually frozen strawberries) and I remember being sooooo embarrassed that my mom was meeting me to walk home. Man, I was an ungrateful kid. I did, however, like when my parents had an errand or an appointment right after I got out of school. My mom would always bring me a freshly made bowl of arroz con papas and some ranchera or a chuleta.

Growing up I went to catholic school, my mom was the lunch lady... There is a smell that all catholic schools have that is a mixture of rehydrated powdered mashed potatoes, some sort of meat in gravy, and over steamed veggies. I will never forget that smell. I ate school lunch every day unless we were going on a field trip. My dad use to always chaperon because my mom had to stay at the school. I was spoilt, I got lunchables, left over cold pizza, some times even soda. I was never the cool kid expect when my little igloo lunch box was filled with grape Swedish fish and pizza.

Communications technology was my favorite class since all we did was play quake 2 or UT2 on LAN. On free periods i would go under a different alias in the Mik'maq counselor's room (a place for the reservation kids to go for help) and hear people cuss my alter ego out across the hall. We used to get bagged milk when i was in grade Primary for lunch (P-12) because Canada (Bagged milk being a thing up here, and the company that made the milk also sold juice in bags of bagged juice). PB&J was the main course until i could make my own sandwiches, my mother used to make them until grade 2. I used to have the typical fruits, boxed raisins, those packages of cheese and crackers. In elementary they would have "hotdog day" on fridays, and "pizza days" on wednesdays. Junior high days we had pizza days, and mainly homemade foods from a canteen (i miss the hot chicken sandwiches) since i went to the same schools my parents went to. Senior High those schools got replaced by a building designed by an architect who designed prisons, also the cafeteria company was a subsidiary for a company that had all the prison contracts. But the food was modern for a canadian standard, so i would work at a tobacco shop to afford my appetite for poutines, ceasar wraps and pizza wraps.

Back home in Portugal food was awesome and always cooked. The schools provided it! Private catholic schools that parents pay according to their salaries ( poorer people pay less). We always had to eat soup and sandwiches were snacks that we would take to school as mid morning and mid afternoon snacks.

Man looking back I used to get teased a lot for carrying lunch. To this day I prefer to eat alone or with a few close friends, if I am in public. Mom gave us bread and cheese, peanut butter sandwiches, mango juice, cool aid, mac and cheese, porridge or whatever else she could find. In Jamaica at that time poor kids carried lunch. I used to cry but when I got to high school I realised that many of the kids teasing me didnt have parents who cared about what they ate or even if they ate. Thanks Mom. Ps. One day that mango juice melted and leaked out the bottle, everything smelled sour and turned yellow. Books, uniform and bag😂

At least Jenny grew up in Miami not so long ago... I grew up half Cuban and half Gallega, in NJ, in a Catholic school full of mostly Irish kids... Bringing a choripan brought a lot of looks, I also would bring grelos with garlic and olive oil... I was bullied for it. It was nuts!!!

In third grade, I used to get homemade lunches that contained ham and cheese sandwiches, but my mom would always forget to add the little freezer block to keep the lunch cool. By lunch time- the ham and mayonnaise were all warm and gross!! I flat out refused to eat it! Lol after complaining about it and she realized I was just wasting food, I got a lunch box with a built-in cooler block and the sandwiches were good again lol.

I always had to bring my lunch because it wasn't provided in my catholic school and since I wasn't a big eater my (Cuban) abuela would make me this potaje I would bring in a *gasp* thermos to school everyday. Let's just say it was a thick soup concoction made of meat vegetables and god knows what else but It was the only thing I would eat and I loved it. She took the best care of me and wanted to make sure I would eat. And of course I got the ewwwww what's that or that smells comment. I would never say that to someone but some kids are just super cruel and nasty. Anywho that's my dos centavos! Love you yenny!

I'm Jamaican but I used 2 eat lunchables cuz my family all worked a lot cuz we were fresh from Jamaica just coming to America but after about 2 years of supermarket food came in the Jamaican food cuz I was not gonna frickin' eat them school lunchesbdo I brought in the Vienna sausage between bread or just Vienna sasauge in a container, some curry(insert any meat here) with rice, some ox tail with rice, and other Jamaican food and I would always have some fruit like apple, banana, orange, and in some instance mango or pear (avocado) and u know I was livin' for that mango and pear (avocado) sometimes I would have dessert like sugar bun, pudding, black cake, chubby, milo, those nestle blue cans with the really sweet creamy drink, sorrel and I remember one time I brought some black cake with me and the whole cafeteria smelled like rum and the teachers were trying to find out where the smell came from and they finally noticed it was my food and they were telling me to throw it away because they thought it was alcoholic so I'm half way done with my block of black cake and she they were talking to me I looked at them stuck my fork inside the remainder of the block and put it in my mouth and ate it they just stared at me and were panicking and telling me to spit it out and telling me to open my mouth so when I was finished and swallowed it I opened my mouth and it smelled like rum and they were freaking out and called my mom and my mom explained and then a fellow Caribbean teacher came in and explained some more and I got scolded by the teacher and my mom but I didn't care....so.....😐
