Sweepers was invented bby the Great Fijian 7s team in 1990-92 that won the Hong Kong 7s three years in a row. Coached by one of the greatest 7s coach Tukiti.

Well, they weren't really invented by him, they may have been adapted to sevens by him, but fullbacks were in 15's long before sweepers were in 7's.

sweepers is not a set position in a 7s team like 15s where the no 15 is the fullback, and we all know the in the 15s game the15th guy will be the last guy in defense,the fullback and that is role to play whereas for the 7s game anybody can be a sweeper, the playmaker or the halfback or even the winger....before the fiji 7s team from 1990 to 1992 there were no sweepers in rugby 7s...they started it before every one adopted it...give credit where it is due bro...and this video is ABOUT 7S RUGBY NOT 15s.

Callum Scott It was invented by him. NZ were the other team that adapted before they made it official.

Meli Matanatoto .....and legendary Waisale Serevi was the 1st ever sweeper to play that role beginning from his first club rugby mentored by the Clubs coach later on National Coach Tukiti. Serevi became famous executing his extraordinary unmatched rugby skills from the sweeper positions and the World watched in awe! Before Serevi there were no player falling behind when team is in defending mode even in Hong Kong.

@@callumscott953 it was invented in the 90s by the fijians fyi,,, that the reason they won hong kong 7s 3 years in a row, then every team start following the fijians,,,there was no sweepers in sevens until the fijians invented it.. research your history in sevens rugby. The coah who invented it was Kitione Vesikula Fijian coach... how old are you when it was invented..
