My 7yo is learning about emotions in school too. He'll often say "I'm feeling jealous" or "I'm feeling worried." I try to remember to acknowledge that I'm proud of him for saying how he feels. Also the other day I was losing my sh*t at his sister and he asked me if I wanted a hug. Then while we were hugging he said "It's good to have a distraction when you're angry." 💔💕

When my youngest was in elementary school, the local school district started a program similar to what your child is going through. My youngest taught me how to belly breathe and reminded me to do it whenever he noticed I was angry or anxious. It has helped a lot now that he's a teen. He's not afraid to express how he feels.

I have been a school nurse for over 40 years in the a Michigan school district. ODD, ADHD, OCD, Autism, Dysregulation Syndrome, Anxiety, Depression. There is an epidemic. Many children enter kindergarten already with severe psychological issues. Some states, ie., Michigan, have rules and regs about how and when to suspend. Schools feel pressured to keep kids in school. Here, in my area, mental health agencies are extremely difficult to access. I spent 2 weeks trying to get a violent student help. We finally did call 911 as the only alternative. He spent these 2 weeks in the ED because there were no beds. He was released with no intervention. CPS is worthless. Recently a CPS worker identified me as the person who made a referral. This recipe of toxicity is sooo true, Oh my gosh, I just heard you talk about using groups of wise students as first line identification and support. I recommended this after Columbine. I was famous for this insight for a couple days, then alas, it was a flash in the pan.

I was going to pass on this episode...I'm very glad I didn't. As a firefighter, I interviewed kid fire setters. There was one three-year old that scared the shit out of all of us. You're right - the parents were causing this little guy's pain and his only way to express his fear was to burn their stuff and them. Scary family, actually. Great info to ponder. I've also learned I should go watch some kids shows that I missed. Take care and Merry Christmas to you both.

As someone who lived homicidal, and other, ideation, perhaps I have some insight into this. I can 100% agree the breaking point is when you feel you have nothing to lose. I was able to think myself down and how it would affect my life, as I was not suicidal. I spent 15 years of my life afraid of myself. It took me 10 years go get my head in the right place, learn to accept the aspect of me, eventually becoming a balanced individual. I could go into many details, but that's a long story, maybe another time.

With regards to the shooting, it still burns me up that the administration was concerned enough to ask for an emergency meeting THAT DAY but wasn't concerned enough to search him and his belongings for means.

Agreed (obviously) shame on that administration! I hate to wish feelings of guilt on anyone. But if anyone is deserving, it's them. I can only hope that all school administrators think long and hard about what they will differently going forward. There is no simple solution but please do something.

They were concerned enough to ask for an emergency meeting but not demand a 15 year old be sent for emergency care. It's like the school nurse calling mom because an arm is broken, then asking the kid if he's good to go back to class. When my son was in second grade (so ~7) he sneaked an obviously toy sword to school. The administration called the police before they called me. The item was confiscated, he received a stern talking to and a detention. Why the Michigan admin team allowed a 15 year old with so many red flags to chill then head back to class is beyond me.

So hard to predict. My son’s school had a shooter. Two students died, a sweet teen girl and the shooter, who killed himself. There were so many clues…. For weeks before. This kid was looking up guns on his laptop in the lunchroom, threats to kill a teacher, sheriff report, student suspension… thank god the kid could not buy an automatic; because of his age, he could only buy a regular gun. There was blame swirling around the school for months afterward. It’s possible if the administrators and sheriff would have wanted to take the next step, they could have connected the kid and his family to a social worker. They didn’t think he was dangerous enough to do so…
@DyvmSlorm
@DyvmSlorm 2 жыл бұрын
@@gayluinstra1396 Way too many of these shootings have so many clues when we look back at them (hindsight). We need to do a better job of connecting all these records so they can be taken as a whole and not just one off. The only issue I have with your story is that it is very difficult for anyone, including adults in buying an automatic. In Wisconsin, for instance, a kid can carry but not own a semiautomatic rifle. God forbid a child actually uses a semiautomatic or pump shotgun. We are very lucky that that has not happened yet. I'm really not trying to attack your post at all as I agree with everything you said, but the term automatic will set many gun people and make them tune out what you are saying.
@TUMARK2
@TUMARK2 2 жыл бұрын
@@gayluinstra1396 sorry about you and your son's experience, the child could not buy an automatic ie machine gun The National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA) defines a number of categories of regulated firearms. These weapons are collectively known as NFA firearms and include the following: Machine guns Includes any firearm which can fire repeatedly, without manual reloading, "by a single function of the trigger",[10] Both continuous fully automatic fire and "burst fire" (e.g., firearms with a 3-round burst feature) are considered machine gun features. The weapon's receiver is by itself considered to be a regulated firearm. A non-machine gun that may be converted to fire more than one shot per trigger pull by ordinary mechanical skills is determined to be "readily convertible", and classed as a machine gun, such as a KG-9 pistol (pre-ban ones are "grandfathered").[citation needed]

This was so so amazing! I think Dr. Zoffness is one of my favourite guests just because her speciality is pain which is something that is very close to me given the past few years of my life. The two most interesting parts for me were the story about the young guy in the wheelchair with the gummies and the stuff about pacing with long COVID and other chronic illnesses. The gummies might not have been the most ethical thing but woah does that ever make a case for the power of placebos. Placebos actually fascinate me in so many ways though too. When I hear people describe long COVID, it immediately made me think of pretty much every other chronic illness including mine with IIH and chronic migraine. I'll share a story about pacing that I did with IIH on Locals when I was first diagnosed with IIH. I didn't know that's what I was doing at the time but when Dr. Zoffness talked about pacing, I was like that's exactly what I did at the start of my journey with IIH. Also, I love the name Pain Points so much too.

You are both incredible! Every school staff member, administrator, board of education member and parent needs to see this! As a former special Ed/gen Ed teacher, former board of education trustee and mom of 3 neurodiverse 2e kids (gifted/ASDL1/adhd/anxiety) I ponder the addition of an “evolutionary” component to bio-psycho-social profile. In today’s world, many adults define success of children by stellar grades and acceptance to a top notch college/university. These high expectations have translated to a top down approach to pre k-12 academic and developmental expectations that often exceed a child’s bio-psycho-social-evolutionary innate developmental programming and capacity to “produce” by meeting grade level expectations. We do this in exchange of the developmentally appropriate whole-body movement, play and social experiences their bodies and brains need to develop their self-regulatory systems socio-emotional skills and evolutionary gut instincts and for survival- think 70’s childhood! This has been exacerbated by overuse and/or inappropriate use of screens. The pandemic ramped this up even more. So instead of children using the 7 senses (the basic 5 plus vestibular and proprioceptive…there are even more…) required for them to learn about, make sense of and adapt to the 3D world in the way our kids’ prefrontal cortex’s need, they have been put in a box with a 2D screen flooding them with digital dopamine. Less screen time 📺 🎮 MORE GREEN TIME 🌳 🌞 🧘🏽🚣🏼‍♀️🏕🚴🏾‍♂️🌱🌎 When we structure learning/growing environments for and WITH children’s input in ways that allow for flexibility in thinking/teaching/learning, problem solving, ample time for outdoor play/exploration, socialization and classroom community reflection meetings, many kids’ needs are organically met real-time. These naturally “therapeutic” environments allow for meaningful opportunities for kids to organically develop socioemotional skills, self regulation and awareness of/response to others’ emotions with caring and for teachers/adults to observe and intervene if/when is needed. Those children who may need more support and implicit instruction/intervention can be proactively identified sooner instead of falling through the cracks and unraveling in middle and high school. I believe many of the concerning behaviors children exhibit are stress induced-fight/flight/freeze responses (depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation and more) in response to the deprivation of the bio-psycho-evolutionary programming experiences and environments our children need, designed from birth-adulthood (not the other way around). I speculate this is even more pronounced in neurodiverse children. It is my hope that our leaders realize that your therapeutic, caring and non-shaming approach in support and treatment to meet each child’s bio-psycho-social-evolutionary needs coupled with developmentally appropriate practice will guide our children to discover their strengths/gifts allowing them to follow their authentic paths to healthy adulthood and success. 🌍 🕊✨

Talking about the languishing in bed thing. I did that for about 6-8 months after being hospitalized for a mental breakdown. But I did finally start 'pacing' myself out of that state. Never realized that's what I did until she described it, but that's totally what I did. For example, I hadn't worked in nearly a year. So I started by finding things I could do online and I found transcription work. It was self-paced and you could do as little or as much as you wanted. It had community and I had something new to learn. Once I started doing that, then I decided to volunteer at the SPCA once a week. That got me out of the house. And I've been slowly adding things ever since! It's been a long road in some ways but really not that long if you think that just 2 years ago I was suicidal and couldn't handle normal everyday life without severe, continuous panic.

This is why I rarely listen to your videos. Just because something has barely been studied doesn't mean it's psychological. Many of these people with Long Covid have POTS. POTS, ME, etc are biomedical just as cancer is. These things are not easily explained because they have barely been studied. You pompous doctors act like we already know everything about the human body. These things mainly affect women and have not been studied as well as things that affect men. Look at the credible research for POTS and the auto antibodies they are finding. There is currently a study being done on innate immunity issues and POTS. We need to figure out the immune system better before you make these types of claims. I have pots and got the flu. For that week, I was completely in remission from pots. While I get the opposite effect from vaccines, there is something that needs to be researched there, some people feel better. You can't make these claims until we know more about the immune system and autoimmunity. Otherwise, you sound like a cocky doctor that thinks he knows everything which results in poor outcomes for patients.

“How do you teach emotions?” Theatre and Drama. I teach at a university and I have a class called Dynamic Leadership through Improvisation. We connect improv exercises to what it means to be an Emotionally Intelligent leader: empathy, listening, collaboration, and much more. Drama in the schools is where students learn to see the world through someone else’s eye: feel what it’s like to speak as someone else, to connect with my emotions and use those skills to create art.

I wanted to give my unsolicited take on this as a formerly picked on teenager. Firstly I truly hope that you're at a better place now and that you have/had the opportunity to process what happened and make a sense of it to some degree. The general agreement seems to be that some people tend to prey on those that stand out for being percieved as either"weaker" or simply "different" then themselves (be it physical or mental disorders, minorities, exceptionally smart or talented, LGBTQ, special needs and isolated/lonely individuals) in order to gain significance and compensate for their weaknesses and because they believe that there will be no consequences (which sadly enough is the reality in most cases). Basically just like sharks they will pick out the weakest target in the flock of people and even though a greater sense of confidence and assertiveness could repel them, that isn't easy to achieve as adults let alone as a developping child. Apologies if reopening this topic caused you distress.🙏🏻

@@searipple91 It only bugs me a little bit now, and I opened the subject, so don't worry about that. I rode a rural school bus into town to high school from Grade 9 to Grade 13). There were all ages from Kindergarten up. Sat with a bunch of other high school kids at the back of the bus. Sometime in my last year of school the other high school kids turned on me. Wouldn't let me sit with them, called me names, swore at me, threw garbage at me, spat on me, hit me in the back of the head. There were about a dozen of them. Nothing about me had changed. I don't know what happened. By that time I was the only one who went to my high school so I didn't have to deal with them there, thank goodness. It really did get to me at the time, and troubled me off and on for decades. I have recently decided that teenagers are idiots and it doesn't matter why. Loved it, thank you ! I am just wondering, as you’re both into spirituality, why you’re not more mentioning the “bio-psycho-social and spiritual model” … more and more researchers think the biopsychosocial model should be expanded to include the spiritual dimension as well. And i am even wondering if the WHO already inserted it into its concept of health … Looking forward for your next video :)

When it comes to bullying telling a teacher about it doesn’t necessarily help. I watched my teachers watch a child being bullied. Then when he finally reacted he was the one that got in trouble, not the bully. More importantly Dr. Zoffness also states that the principles and teachers know. Why do children need to wait for other children to help them? What is stopping the adults from stepping up or in to help them?

It looks like my comment was deleted? Not sure why. I was just discussing that I agreed with everything you said and that my sister-in-law, Scarlett Lewis, who lost her son in a school shooting (in CT) has dedicated her life to making sure that SEL is taught in EVERY school. Social and emotional learning is the key to preventing further school shootings.

I loved this conversation. One thing I wish Rachel could have touched on when answering the question bout how to find a therapist: is how to find a therapist that understands and can work with someone whose background/culture/ethnicity is different. As an Asian American, one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced personally is trying to find a therapist that understands my own background and culture. Like there are some things that a white therapist is just not going to understand or relate to with a second generation immigrant.

The thing about emotion and meditation is really interesting, I have the fortune to have a teacher that teaches this. If someone thinks that meditation removes emotion somehow, thats a sign of spiritual bypassing and their control issues.

I grew up in the next community to the east of Oxford, Michigan. The demographics of our two communities are very similar. When I heard of the shooting, I thought that this could just as easily have happened in my home town. I have a friend who is a teacher at Oxford High School. This incident hit him and his colleagues extremely hard as well as the entire student body of that school. The healing process is going to be long and laborious. The staff at the school, the students at Oxford High School and the entire Oxford community are going to bear scars from this shooting for generations to come. They are all in my thoughts and prayers, often.

I don't think calling 911 is the answer. Or at least, I don't think the police are the answer. We need more units that specialize in mental health that are readily available for situations like this. Also, therapy needs to be more accessible and affordable for EVERYONE
@ceciliahernandez9517
@ceciliahernandez9517 2 жыл бұрын
The reason they call the police is so they can put them on a 5150 hold (72hr hour hold) so they can get properly evaluated by a specialist. And if needed they can be transferred to a facility to further help them.

@@ceciliahernandez9517 Yes but calling the police on someone who is having a mental health crisis can only make it worse. It's stigmatizing and I'd argue the majority of officers are not capable of handling situations like this with proper care

I loved this episode. I’m very fascinated with the placebo effect. I’ve commented before about having anxiety since all this covid bs. One thing I’ve been doing when I feel like im about to have a panic attack is I just listen to really loud music. And it feels like a treatment but it could also be a placebo effect. Music has always been a profound thing for me. Either way, it has been working. I also haven’t been experiencing panic attacks like I was. But I’ve also been trying to eat better.

One thing I was taught during my EMT training is on a suicide call be careful. The suicidal person seem to have some tendencies to want to kill someone with them. Reflecting on what was said that a child who is homicidal tend to be suicidal is something that is taught at a low level in medical training. If someone is suicidal or you think they could be suicidal there is a chance they are homicidal. If they have suicidal tendencies they may already be fully homicidal.

I've had chronic degenerative pain for many years. Also been off and on opioids for just as long. I WISH I could legally work with someone to at least try different cannabis formulations for my pain along with my conditions that cause worsened pain. Anxiety, depression etc. But of course, it's not legal in Texas yet.

If you don't have to drug test for a job find someone with some pot and try it yourself. It doesn't have to be legal millions and millions of people have smoked it without it being legalized in their states. It's pot and it should be legal everywhere

As a paramedic. I am not getting enough of these calls when appropriate. These events need to be called in as a psych emergency. We would absolutely transport him to an ED for an involuntary commitment. The hospital may not keep him. Some areas have a crisis response team but not all. To activate that call 911. The caller can triage that call to see if a police and EMS response is necessary. If the crisis team is sent it will be with PD.

Hi Dr Z, can you do an episode about tinnitus from the vaccine and covid19?
@jlholmes8
@jlholmes8 2 жыл бұрын
I could probably write 15 pages of comments on this episode, but I’m stopping towards the end about therapists. I wholeheartedly agree with Dr. RZ, don’t give up, but I’ll tell you it’s not easy. I’ve gone through several who have retired, gone on sabbatical, dropped my insurance, got pregnant, and a lot else (my daughter won with the massive coronary death of hers). First it is not easy to find one that is taking new patients, much less your insurance (and mine is pretty good), second it takes time to form trust, with the exception of the one that was dealing with my whole tight nit community and already knew everything about everyone even if she didn’t know names, developing trust especially when you come from a “non-normal” social dynamic (sexual & gender identity fluent group) is not easy. It takes a lot of work, and that in and of itself is very stressful. We definitely need more people to understand that everything that is going on in your life effects you, not just the physical or emotional, but the social pressures (which become emotional). I had a couple of post divorce years of really bad decisions, and “coming clean” about them is not easy, which is where the trust comes in. Trust at that level isn’t easy, and the medical-economic conditions in the US makes it harder. I wish there was a pill that would just fix it, but there isn’t, because as you say it’s not all biological, and we want the quick fix, which doesn’t exist. Drs. Z & Z, I would be happy to support a monthly cast from the two of you (though Zdog, could probably use less caffeine before the recording). This has been the best Zdog I’ve watched by far. Thank you both.

most people that kill themselves most of the time don't say anything about it other than their behavior to what perception in their life changed. so the one that are closest to anyone in pain harm or any negativity its up to us to change these circumstances into positive.
