Gotta say, it never occurred to me to call School Spirits "YA". Is Back to the Future YA because four of its five leads are portraying highschoolers? I watched School Spirits as a fully adult story about people from different eras interacting at similar points in their own lives. It made me care about all the major characters and many minor ones, it set the rules of its universe very well, and from a mystery standpoint it set up its twist with huge fairness. Perfection.
