My Instructor started off w/ the Air Brake Test which rekindled my memory loss of NOT doing 18 wheeler the past 3 years yet I knew something was OFF. We do NOT start w/ that Test. Real Drivers start as she started via viewing the Truck &/or Bus from the front looking underneath & down the sides to the back. The Air Brake Test should be one of the LAST things you do just prior to Emergency Brake & Service Brake Test. 👀 That order makes WAY more actual sense. Idk why my Instuctor is going out of order but w/e. I passed my CDL A so I will pass my CDL B nonetheless regardless

Try not to let the pretrip overwhelm you. Much of the pretrip is nothing more than repetitive phrasing. Once you learn the brakes suspension and wheels up front, most of that can be applied in back. You can do this!

Ranch Hawk, Thank you for your comment and feedback! I believe we will be doing another live feed soon...possibly Friday. It will be on School Bus Safety ROAD-E-O. If you are not familiar with the event, it is a safety driving competition for school bus drivers. We have not had one in over two years, so I'm looking forward to the event that takes place in April. We set up a course, similar to the up coming event. I will have one of our drivers demonstrate the different events that will take place. We will also be utilizing this course for in-service training. I have a few more ideas for up-coming videos, so stay tuned. Sorry for the long delay between postings.

Are country's pretrip is ridiculously long and unreasonable. Welcome to the America of the future run and regulated by over educated children. Show me any school bus company that could afford to realistically do a 30 minute pretrip multiple routes a day and survive financially or keep drivers employed? And asking people to do this all straight from memory and not use a guide or log sheet that you have to have on board anyway is beyond moronic. I've been driving for 15 years and the amount of difficulty they have added to these tests since i began is beyond stupidity. My first test i was allowed to have the exact study sheet along as a helpful guide. All you had to know was where those parts are. And that's all anyone should have to know.
@CoreHibb Жыл бұрын
@John yesss.. Exactly! smh.. it is absolutely unfair that we have to memorize all of that! I have to take mine again.. & pay $450 to retake it (failed the pre-trip test bcz the instructor didnt hear the "cheee" sound after psi built up to the 120).. smh.. this is so frustrating & I'm realllly struggling financially 😫

The company that I've been training with, and have an exam with tomorrow for my CDL B, has been training in a different order for the air brake test than shown here. Inside pre trip inspection(seats, emergency exits first, then gauges) followed by ABT. First: Wheels chocked, , neutral, engine on, pressure built up to max, shut off engine, parking brake applied, static air brake test (1 minute, no more than 2psi air loss) Second: Parking brake in, service brake(pedal) firmly held (1 minute, no more than 3psi air loss) Third: Fan brakes down to 60psi until low air warning and buzzer comes on Fourth: Keep fanning brakes down to 20-30psi until parking brake applies, indicating the spring brake is applied. Secure key and remove chocks(do not leave bus while engine running, even if just to move chocks) Fifth: Safe start engine, pressure will build up to 85-100psi in 45 seconds, then governor will cut in with the brakes "woosh" sound Sixth: Shift into low gear, press on accelerator pedal to confirm parking brake holds Seventh: Release parking brake, drive forward 5 feet, braking to make sure the bus doesn't pull to the left or right. Repeat 2x. Then pull the parking brake, put it in neutral, and say "this now completes the air brake test"

Which state do you reside in? Thanks for sharing another version of the ABT.

I will highly recommend your videos to any trainees I encounter. One thing I especially like about your videos is the production quality. @SchoolBusSass Жыл бұрын
Hi Julius, to empty the air tanks, push down on the service brake pedal repeatedly until the parking brake sets itself. Warning light and buzzer will activate above 55 PSI and brake will set between 20-40. Probably not doing another brake test. The brake portion of the exam can be found on all of my pretrip videos. As for a new pretrip, I will probably do one late this year or into the new year, on a BB RE transit.

@SchoolBusSass one more question while the engine is on do you keep the headlights on while checking heater fans and dome lights and emergency windows buzzers or do you turn the headlights off because I'm wondering about the no students left button and when to push it, or the lights don't have to be on and you press the button after you done the air brake test
@SchoolBusSass11 ай бұрын
The headlights should have no bearing on the no child left behind alarm. Using your loading lights with your service door, will activate your no child left behind system.

On average, how long does it take trainees to learn the pre trip?

In my experience, it takes most people about 5-7 times conducting the pretrip, in person, to complete the pretrip in the allotted time with under the error limit.

Pretrip: Try to slow things down, just a bit. People tend to talk faster when they get nervous. Maneuverability: If allowable, always check your final position for each maneuver you complete. Even if you are positive you’ve done the maneuver perfectly. If it’s a free look…take it. Gives you a moment to check out your awesome skills…😉 or, correct an issue you may not have seen from the drivers seat. For instance…in straight line backing, perhaps you stopped behind the 4th set of cones but there were five sets. A final check would reveal this and afford you the opportunity to correct your final position (hope that made sense) Driving: take your turns slow! It will give you the opportunity to correct any potential errors…like clipping a curb). I would much rather have my drivers take a, slightly wider, right hand turn, than clip a curb. A wider turn, may be a few point deduction, clipping a curb ends your test…not in a good way. Whenever possible stop at all yellow lights. Believe…achieve it! You’ve got this, Mike!

@@SchoolBusSass• Truckers hauling 80k lbs have such issues routinely hence the DOT has setup strategic “Runaway Truck Ramp” locations most notably in areas like Colorado or wherever Truckers traverse Mountainous regions. Yet I highly seriously doubt School Buses will ever experience such minus Class Trips across Mountainous regions unfamiliar to the driver which is realistically never going to happen since even those Trips are Pre Planned Routes.
@metalgear-26 күн бұрын
@@SchoolBusSass• We actually use a method called “Engine Braking” which works even for School Buses. You slip into lowest Gears &/or via an Automatic into 2nd or 3rd or whatever then allow the Engine to slow you down. You brake a little to help the engine then release brakes. Wait a few seconds & brake a little again. Rinse & Repeat. If you hold down the Brakes full time you can & will overheat them then lose them.

Okay I'm confused now. The 3 orange lights at the top is my clearance lights. Which ones is the amber lights sounds like I'm hearing amber lights more then 3 times
@SchoolBusSass Жыл бұрын
The clearance lights in front and on the side before the rear dual wheels, are all Amber, after the duals, clearance lights are red. Your warning lights are amber. They are the alternating flashing lights you activate before you arrive at a pick up or drop off location, then, once you open the bus door, the alternating flashing lights switch from Amber to the red lights located adjacent to the amber lights on the front and rear of the bus. Also known as eight ways. Reflectors on the side of the bus are also Amber before the duals and red after. The reflective tape, is also viewed as amber.
