I bought the Affinity apps as they came out, and even though it's been a few years, there was an immediate 'quickness' to the applications. Adobe is sitting on decades old codebase, and it really shows. If I didn't have to teach with Adobe CC, I would be able to use the Affinity suite for my graphic needs. All we need now is a third party After Effects.
@Satysatonachair3 ай бұрын
It's crazy how so many of us are anchored to Adobe only because of After Effects. Which is funny, considering how little they care about it. Their big apps like photoshop and Illustrator have several viable alternatives, but their only app which has no real competition yet, they've just decided to pretty much abandon. I love AE and I would LOVE for Adobe to properly update it, but I don't think that'll ever happen. There's just nothing that comes close to replacing AE yet though.

Cavalry is pretty sweet for motion. It's not intended for compositing & effects so you'll still want to combine it with Ae or Resolve probably, but for 2D motion design it's a much more modern approach. I think the next release will have node integration too, which will be a game changer..

Honestly speaking, I might switch over to Affinity from Adobe. I hope that you guys create animation tutorials that start to include programs like Fusion or Affinitiy's line.
@joeykorenman3 ай бұрын
Fusion is awesome, but (in my opinion) not a very easy tool to use for motion design types of projects. For VFX it's up there w/ Nuke.
@gabehobbs3 ай бұрын
@@joeykorenman Thank you for saying this. Every time I say it people lose their minds and say I don't understand nodes. But no, Fusion is not a great mograph software -- can it be done? Yes. But it's like using a hammer with a screw. For VFX? It's awesome. Hoping blackmagic invests more into the mograph workflow in the future though!
@gameof.football3 ай бұрын
I recommend you to consider Blender and UE5. I moved on from Adobe since CS6. In my company we are still using it but personally it is expensive for me and after dealing with their customer service left a bitter taste. I'm an old man and if I can learn nodes and new apps I believe everyone can.
@FlameForgedSoul3 ай бұрын
@@joeykorenman One main issue is the tools that take it from 'capable' to 'ohhhhh' are all third party (FuGraph and Krokodove specifically). There is… It’s called fusion and is found in Davinci resolve! Why better? Because it’s node based, has significant better performance, out of the box EXR support… and oh, it’s free. Studio version is a one time payment of 300 bucks
@ed617303 ай бұрын
@@kunemann It really does depend on your workflow. If you use ai and ps files ae is so much better than fusion/ da Vinci studio. Different programs have different pros and cons. Lets eb honest the free version is missing a lot of the best features. Davinci ai is amazing.

Affinity Designer may not have all the Illustrator tools, but it is so much easier and more streamlined to do a lot of stuff in Designer. I tried Adobe for a while but it felt like I was jumping into a conversation held by experts that had been ongoing for a decade. Affinity fits me better and relieving myself from recurring cost adds to the comfort. With emerging options, like Pixel Composer, there seems to be less need for independent creators to conform to so-called industry standards.

I own Affinity Photo as well, but my brain seems to be so hardwired to Photoshop, that although they're fairly similar, it's easier to go back to PS. At the moment, I use Adobe at work and Affinity at home. I mainly use Affinity Designer that easily switch from pixel to vector. It's perfect for design and illustration. It's like Illustrator combined to Photoshop. I just feel an Affinity alternative to After Effects would be the thing to help people make a full conversion, to mimic the seamless pipeline you can experience within Adobe. But since exporting PSD and SVG to AE is possible, I don't really miss Illustrator.

It's a bit weird to see 50% of the topics being an ad for various different AIs ... from a channel specializing in art of some kind. It's rare to see actual artists optimistic about the current state of generative AI and its future - for a very good reason. While I think there's nothing bad with automating tedious tasks like a luma matte per se, you're still effectively advertising the use of e.g. Runway's AI for this. Meaning if people now pay Runway money to do this one single task, it gives them leverage and funds to further exploit creative forces all over the globe like they already do. And don't get me started on Duolingo. When they announced they're now using AI to translate stuff, it was the first step in a very wrong direction imo.
@DatGuyWithDaGlasses3 ай бұрын
This AI technology isn’t going away, people seeing the writing on the wall and choosing to acknowledge the real use of this technology isn’t something to frown about imo. We accept the circumstances of today and of the future, and we incorporate the technology with our work. Good artists adapt, change is happening very rapidly and it’s understandable to be hesitant but there’s nothing worse then holding yourself back while everyone else moves on.

Affinity has done this before. They gave away their software during the pandemic. That’s how I used and learned about them. Ultimately did not prefer Affinity over Adobe. Affinity fans don’t tell you the limitations from a professional production standpoint that are really lacking because Affinity fans aren’t aware or don’t ever use these features in Adobe. Affinity is good and has potential, but it’s not there yet.
@JJ-sz3xu2 ай бұрын
I've always needed and used these tools in the context of businesses I've owned for advertising and content creation for the business itself. I switched from Adobe to Affinity when they went to the subscription model, having owned multiple copies of Creative Suite prior to that. I have zero regrets and never had an issue with Affinity delivering what I needed, which as you suggest is not in the context of professional production, but has always been 100% business use. The only tool I miss, which I can't remember the name of, was to help organize the thousands of photos I deal with. However, the cost savings over the years far outweighs the loss of that single feature which had been a helpful part of my workflow. I will never go back to Adobe and been very happy with Affinity. Somewhat related, for motion graphics we use Rive exclusively and increasingly for many aspects of what we do.
@ed617303 ай бұрын
I'll keep using Adobe. It's not just about the one program. It's about how their files work seamlessly with all their other apps. Being able to use ps, ai and ae files in premiere. PS layers in AE. These are the features I really need. Not to mention how good Adobe AI is in PS, can't imagine what generative fill in ae will be like. Can't wait.
@joeykorenman3 ай бұрын
Yep... that's (IMO) why Adobe's moat is almost unsurmountable. The network effects they have are MASSIVE, and even making your product free isn't gonna be enough, but it could take away some market share for designers who don't need video or animation tools. Interesting times!
