Thank you Stephen - I'm going to be rather lost for the next couple of months with no steam to film. I suppose I could do some local history but the days are so short at this time of year and I'm past the point at which I'm happy driving in the dark - ah, the joys of growing old!

Border television news covered this story as a Halloween item and showed the arrival of the special at Ravenglass,. They interviewing the children as they came off the train and they all enjoyed the spooky entertainment provided on board followed by the fun at the castle. Good to see the other side of the excursion from your prospective making a great day out for all concerned.

The kids were certainly sounding very excited back at the station - though I bet a lot of them slept on the train home! Sadly, that's nearly it now for 2024.

Why go all the way to Millom to effect a crossover? Well, to send the special train northwards from Ravenglass to Drigg's crossover on the "wrong" road and behind at least one protecting signal would be to dangerously compromise the absolute block system. Millom's crossover on the other hand exists within the area of railway ("station limits") that is completely under the signalman's control in both directions.

Photographed this doing the track changeover at millom although i half wish i went out to Ravenglass estuary viaduct to get a shot. Nevertheless pretty interesting stuff

This is a really spectacular view at the cumbrian coastline, but ... i always thought the Roman Empire ended at the Hadrians wall, as far as i know…

The Romans had another wall, the less-well-known Antonine wall, farther north, roughly along the line which is now Glasgow to Edinburgh. Ravenglass however is to the south of Hadrian's wall so well within the traditional limits of the empire. Spectacular country indeed.

​@@heinorustenbeck4333 Ravenglass is a long way south of Hadrian's Wall, which ended at Bowness on Solway. The site of the Roman fort (Glannoventa) is a short walk to the south of the modern village. There are some quite impressive ruins known locally as Walls Castle; but they are actually the remains of the bath house.
