Schroder Didn't Let Serbia Create A Miracle

Serbia mounted an impressive fourth-quarter comeback, but ultimately it wasn't enough. Dennis Schroder hit a clutch-driving layup and led Germany to its first-ever FIBA World Cup title in an 83-77 win in the final.
Dennis Schroder finished the game with 28 points on 9-for-17 shooting. Schroder was later named the MVP of the entire 2023 FIBA World Cup. He was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

As a German fan, I would have never expected to win it. Make a deep run in the tournament, yes, but win it? Go 8:0? Taking out the US in the semis? Are you kidding me? Magnificent performance. No iso egoshooters, but a real team effort playing beautiful basketball. And just to mention it: I won't forget that you listed Germany as a dark horse very early.

Personally in my youth playing basketball basically any of my teammates when asked about their goals was "be the next Nowitzki" so I don't think it is possible to overvalue his impact on German Basketball

Amazing for a country where Basketball is a niche sport. Hopefully this helps in growing the game in Germany to a popularity of the extend of that in other European countries or at least a similar level. For this Germany needs to finally extend the density of basketball courts in the cities and towns. Schroeder is such deserved MVP. Andreas Obst and Franz Wagner are truly special ballers. Also this was a battle of 2 great FIBA coaches!

@Janitoro458 I really hope this helps to grow Basketball in Germany. I have loved and played basketball for around 10 years now and Basketball was always widely seen as a non contact pussy sport. The only game of the World cup the casual german got to see in national Television was the final, not even the semifinals against the US were televised. You had to Stream All the games from another platform. Now is the perfect time for Basketball to strive and grow in Germany as our soccer Team (soccer has always been the national Sport by a huge margin) sucks right now

I could see Germany winning gold since that pre-season loss against the US. Clearly the best team out there. Serbia with another heartbreak, so close to winning yet again. Sometimes it makes me realize winning and getting bronze feels much better than losing yet getting silver.

Not to take anything from serbia, they are a very good team. But miracle? Germany went 8-0, undefeated in this tournament and managed to reach the final and on top win it and become world champion for the first time in their history, defeating great opponents like australia and the usa on their way. The title should rather be "Schröder led Germany to a miracle."

Indeed Germany deserved this title, not defeated ONCE, that's impressive. But honestly, Serbia is a really small nation, we basically don't have our own sports league, we are not rich western European country, so it always is a miracle for small nations to do good in the world tournaments. Much less people play it in Germany or even have access to it(due to little number of public courts). And people who watch basketball from time to time also is only around 3 million. Congrats to all Serbians for creating a great team and winning silver medal 💪 despite not having some players there and respect for putting up a fight till the last and for being mainly a very fair, respectful and kind 2nd place. ♥️👏👍🏻🤝

Also Germany was probably the better team throughout this whole tournament up until the final. You have to measure these words through the scope of this tournament only, not basketball history.

I hope this title wont change the expectations for the olympics too much. Getting just a medal in Paris would still be a huge success for Germany. They had their best team possible in this tournament and no injuries during the 3 ko-games. With the other teams healthy and with their stars the olympics will be another story.

Don't wanna take anytning away from Germany, they played great individual and team basketball but still think Serbia underperformed. Apart from Avramovic, Bogdanovic and Petrusev everyone had a bad game. I felt like Guduric was an imposter and others were indecisive and too scared to shoot for some reason. Also Marinkovic had good 1st quarter but he barely played afterwards, instead Guduric was often on Schroder and my man what a missmatch that was. Since Pesic became coach Serbia either wins by a huge difference or loses a close game. When this team scores and defends few possesions in a row it catches its rhytm and its really difficult to stop them. But when the game is tied whole team is kinda slugish. Its either a bad coaching decisions or player not handleing the preasure but probably both. I am kinda sad that we couldn't see both teams at its best and so an atractive 200 points game but credits go to Germany they were disciplined and consistent throughout whole competition, they played tough defence and diverse offense, Denis and Franz are really extraordinary players and true leaders.

Wild take, Germany wasn't that great (like in previous games) how Serbia played bad. Fully deserved German win. Only thing that ruined this game for me is extremely bad referees. No disrespect for Latvia, Mexico and Puerto Rico but their don't have knowledge to referee anything except maybe group stage. Last year referees was terrible, but this 3 stooges almost ruined a game. So many hard fouls they didnt call. Even checking video and not calling clear foul on Serbia when guy was hard pushed from back. Again FIBA again showing its clown organization.

I know which foul you are referring to, but they changed their mind after seeing video footage showing the right hand of the german player did go for the ball in front of the serbian player so a normal foul was the right call.

@@bjorngrundey5695 mate that was hard foul and decision was bad. All fouls that can lead toward bad injury like that one should be hard sanctioned (and according to rules it should). Plus they watched from front, never saw back video where you can see German guy intentionally doing it and not going for a ball. In same way they didnt call foul when Serbian player lost kidney. On both sides refs fucked up badly (maybe Serbia was more damaged this time). Refs in general in FIBA last few years are dog shit.

They didn't call the Serbs on touching the board after the ball touched it, so Serbia can hardly call it one sided. Plus it was rather poor to foul Schroeder on a 3 and when Schroeder touched Abramovic (?) on the shoulder Abramovic went down like being hit by a truck.

@@bjorngrundey5695 I just gave one example, refs were bad (for both sides) and in early stages and early games was even worst. I recall Wagner getting elbow in ribs and no call. I am just generally saying (with 1 example because of comment space) how refs were terrible. 0 bad plays were called.

For all of you saying this is fully deserved, I must say that you are not objective or not a basketball fan at all. The problem is "fully deserved", yes, Germany was great, yes they beat us, but they were very well helped by refs in the final. What those refs did in final game, and most of all in 3rd quarter is criminal. Yes the refs in general in this World Cup are criminal, but in final they were 10 to 1 in Germany favour. Just look review of foul over Avramovic where they watched only from one angle, and not the one where the ref who decided that the foul was unsportmen (because of push from behind). Foul over MVP for 3, are you kidding me, also reviewed... and now 3rd quarter, Germany did beat the hell out of Serbia and didn't even hot out of bonus, the quantity of fouls that "weren't seen" is basically where I understood that we are witnesing again 2010 "Serbia-Turkey" where refs really didn't want to leave any doubt how this gonna finish. To finish, who knows how would this match finish nevertheless, because Germany was and is really good team. That's why they didn't need this clear help from the fiba and refs, and that's why this is NOT fully deserved win.
