First off, love the channel, and your easy to understand repairs and methods. THANK YOU AND KEEP THEM COMING. My 2002 Merc Benz S430 (W220) A/C stopped working after I replaced the windshield wiper hose (with the heater wire/ cable inside). The unit small red light is on indicating the system works, but will not blow cold air. The clutch does engage, on then off, constantly. The typical reset feature/ trick doesn't work for whatever this error is currently. I checked the relays/ switched and replaced them as well. Assuming the system may have been low on refrigerant, I filled it with what it took in, which appeared to be almost two full "tall" cans of AC Pro. Reset the system and the air came on "absolutely freezing cold" for about two minutes then shut off again. After resetting and attempting to make it stay on, it wouldn't reset anymore after four attempts. I noticed a clear liquid had leaked from the bottom center of the car down the driveway to the rear of the car, no smell or color, but thicker than water. The next day, with the engine running and the air refilled and reset once more, I heard a loud hissing and bursting flow of air or spray from under the hood, front drivers side for about 40 seconds then stopped. I believe it was a pressure relief vale of some sort !!! Scared the &%$#@^& %$#%^&%#@ out of me to be exact. The clutch still engages, on then off, constantly. Whats wrong with the cars AC ????? What would you recommend I check or replace???? No AC for the past four months now...

In the run up to 12:29 in the video you had the voltmeter across the load side relay contacts. You would be unlikely to see a potential difference between the two relay load contacts - even if the load was passing current. With an open circuit as you had, the relay load side terminal would be floating. That is why you didn't read a voltage. This of course changed when you rearranged your meter leads to reference to the engine (which is grounded). If your load hadn't been floating the load current would tried to pass through the DVM.

Help please. First of all thanks for posting this great video. Here is my story. An almost similar story made you think AC Compressor Load but I'd like to give you more details. 2012 Malibu 2.4l Engine was replaced and AC came on and off and then disappeared. At 1st, I thought LEAK... Please let me point out I have basic or less than basic electrical diagnostic skill. 2 days ago, I decided to check for power and ground at the compressor connector after making sure all fuses and relay were good. I found a broken power wire (green) at the back of the connector. I connected the 2 wires temporarily, started the car and switch the AC, the clutch engaged and I could feel the air. HAPPY I FIXED IT, i just need to connect wires well for good. Yesterday, i woke up with this task in mind but since the wire cut at the connector was so small, I went to Chevrolet and purchased a brand new connector. THE BEGINNING OF MY NIGHTMARE NOW. I cut power and ground wire and, despite trying to be careful, I connected the wires to the wrong sides of the connector, not sure, but I had ground and power at the end of the Compressor connector. Plugged it, started the car and fuse blew. Replaced it, tried again fuse blew 2 times more. I tried to plug a bi directional scan tool but it would not connect to the control module; it is as if, my scan tool is not plugged. My neighbor put a wire on the ac clutch fuse to bypass it and I ensure to reconnect the power and ground wire like they are supposed to be. Scantool still can't connect. IM VERY CONFUSED AND THIS IS WHERE I NEED YOUR LEAD. 1- My first thought is AC CONTROL MODULE BURNED DUE (I do not know where the AC control module is located). The AC control panel buttons seems to be working. 2- Could the AC Compressor be burned by the wrong wire connections? 3- Since the fuse kept blowing before we bypass it, I also thought another broken wire but I don't know since compressor clutch still wont engage despite bypass. 4- I get 5V at the AC Pressure switch; could the AC pressure switch be the issue? What do you think? Thanks for reading my novel

Did the DYI work on both our car's A/C systems. Found out that oddly VW systems do not cycle the clutch, but are always 'on' during A/C operation. Lousy design. I replaced the clutch with a used one (5 bucks as opposed to almost 200 as you can't buy just the electromagnet) It already failed several months later. Open circuit. Simple ohm check. With mine? Needed to give the system a part charge with U/V tracer. Blew great cold! But the bottom of the receiver dryer had a hairline crack/hole. Always do the simple basic checks before tossing in a can of R134a. (of course, know what to look for! and have an idea for direction as Scanner Danner would say)

Reason #0: Failure of vehicle owner to specify air conditioning option at time of purchase. Don't let that one get you. Ah, but before I even watch the video, let me attempt to turn the attention onto myself by recounting the story of the air conditioner failure in my own vehicle. Long story short, some kind of protective switch in the compressor had/had crapped up contacts, similar to several other contacts in the vehicle (all of which are in components made by Mitsubishi...). The ohm-meter read several 10s of kiloohms across said contact. Rather than expend any substantial effort, I devised a dodgy method for de-crapping the contacts in situ. The contact was in the circuit of the compressor clutch, which is a highly inductive electrical component. I momentarily shorted across the contacts, and the inductive flyback, when the short was removed, produced a high enough voltage to clear the crap and allow the contacts to work properly. This makes it work for another 6 months...

Like a propane torch cleaning off the carbon, you shorted the connection to clean the contacts? Not knowing the circuit makes me call that gutsy! :)

The pressures were both around 95 and never changed. What?

You are a smart man however you do not have to demean anyone to prove it. Automobile wiring these days are made with things like soy, some have sugar and when warm give off a faint vanilla odor. Rodents like mice have always chewed through wires however given the fact most all new automotive wiring are made with these new ingredients I have seen and repaired many broken wires and some a clean cut through like the one you showed. If you see nuts or mice droppings and if the owner of the Vehicle lives in a wooded area this might be what has caused the break. Something to consider. One of many possibilities.

Is that right? Can you help me please...
@SchrodingersBox5 жыл бұрын
If you have power on a compressor ground you must have an internal short- there is no other way. Disconnect the connector and if you have power on the ground then you are doing it wrong.
@kevinferrell17395 жыл бұрын
ok sorry. let me try to explain it better. Please tell me what i am doing wrong. Internal short as a short in the compressor itself you mean? I have power on both ac wires with it plugged in or not plugged in. either way both wire show hot. it shows power on both wires on the compressor. the coil wire and the ground wire . No matter if its plugged in or not . with the ac unplugged i have no power on the wiring harness wire. The wire coming from the harness that has the plug end on it does not have any power only until i plug the ac up. the ac gives it power. instead of that wire giving the compressor power. Which is the way i thought it should be. The ac wires show to be hot even when its not plugged up to the wiring harness. The low pressure side switch shows power on both ports even with the ac unplugged and will blow the big ac fuse if i try to bridge it over to cycle the clutch. Will also blow the big ac fuse if i try to bridge it over from the fuse box/relay. but if i unhook the high side sensor switch that show 3 hot 1 not 4 incerts that gives me 1 hot 1 not on the low side switch. then try to bridge it over and it still will not cycle the clutch but it dont blow the fuse that way. the high side switch like i said shows 3 hot 1 not but the 1 thats shows not hot is a blue wire going into the switch. that blue wire show to have power on it going into the switch but show no power in the port hole of the switch. Yet i can hook a wire to the coil wire on the compressor then to the hot post and the clutch will cycle that way. The compressor worked great on the 96 cherokee. all i did was change the backs out because the lines go on different. i put a test light on the what should be the ground but shows to be hot held it there and i pulled every fuse and relay in the fuse box under the hood 1 by 1 and none of those cause the light to go out or the power to go off of that wire. Didnt do it inside the fuse box yet. . still showed power on the ground wire on the compressor. Well it should be ground but some how its got power on it. i do think i got a ground somewhere because that low side pressure switch should cycle the clutch when u bridge it over from there and so should the fuse/relay but they both will blow the big 20 amp fuse if i try that. How do i find a ground. The electric fan switch/plug in shows, unplugged 1 port has power 1 port no power but when i plug it back in it shows both wires going out the fan to be hot. With the test light on the battery ground the light comes on when i touch anything. the ac lines the compressor the engine the engine block ground inside fender .. Man i need help..i hope you can understand this...

I've been retired mechanic I worked on cars all my life including AC you have your ignition switch on when testing the relay also if you don't know how to text a real life take another relay in the fuse box that has the same numbers on a additional relay for example the windshield relay have the same numbers on they are the same type of relay so take out the windshield wiper relay then take out the AC compressor relay and put it in windshield relay so if you check your windshield wipers in there working you can take both relays out and you can put the real again on the windshield wipers turn them on and if they work the relay is good you just switch them out that's not difficult this guy is trying to talk all technical things are not as complicated as his man is trying to make it sound like you're just putting a a different relay put the same numbers on the AC relay this text out the real way can also take you home meter and voltmeter and cast where are the relay plugs into if that is not correct and you're not getting voltage I have seen sometimes where the fuse box the wire under the fuse box has been burnt so if you're not getting power up to the relay you have a burnt wire most likely hello where you put the fuse at but sometimes you have to take the fuse box off and check the wires on the back of the fuse box you can also inspect the wires going away from the fuse box this is. Very simple to do also pressure switches yes there is a vote test you can do or the voltage going to the pressure switch but to my professional experience some time is precious which can be bad you can hook it up to the scanner and half the pressure switch lightly and the pressure switch made malfunction if it is bad on the scanner you can see if this getting voltage all the time but the switch is bad you're not going to get voltage all the time because when you barely tap a pressure switch if it is bad it's not going to show right you also test the wires of the pressure switch there are two wire pressure switches and there are three wire power switches if you're not a professional do not put voltage to the switches because you're not a professional normally what I do an AC job I always change the pressure switch in the system they are inexpensive pressure switches check the voltage to the wires going to the compressor and you can jump start the compressor motor but you need to make sure you are putting the wires in the right place or you can short out the compressor clutch there's a wrong way and a right way 2 bypass to hotwire the pressure clutch so if you're not a professional and you don't know what wire is which don't do it but if you electrical skills you need to find out which wire is the positive and which wire is the negative in order to jump start the compressor to see if it is a compressor problem

You are very knowledgeable but you seem to allow the stage you're on (the internet) dictate you're delivery. Don't worry about and please stop giving into negative comments and people in general. I learned a lot from whatching this video.I had to rewind a few parts due to your "typical hack" comments. My word to you is if you are sharing knowledge do so without the bitter shade throwing. In this world no one knows it all however, all of our knowledge together can move mountains. Thanks again for the informative vídeo.

I gotta say... People are so freaking sensitive and they're getting free information, wtf, they should be happy for someone who is a professional giving them free information. They shouldn't be a mechanic or work in any shop, they'd be crying in a corner somewhere!

Using logic then brain contrary to your average mechanic love your video. I can’t believe how many thumbs down you got now we know exactly how many monkeys are out there. 👍 I could tell you’re really frustrated and have no patience with how much idiot repairs you see an air-conditioning on KZbin it shows, me too !. Some of my videos about air-conditioning I talked to same way in frustration at the idiots and monkeys that you do.

Hi I just discovered your videos and they seem very informative. In my opinion you should leave the negativity out and just own what you do. By making a point of everything that people might say and will say just eats away at what could be an informative and extremely confident approach. Let the haters hate and allow us to learn from your experiences.. cheers

Thank you so much for posting this video. I noticed last spring that my ac stopped working in my Nissan Xterra. I went a whole year thinking it was going to be an expensive fix. You helped me trouble shoot it. I first noticed the clutch was not coming on. I got my voltmeter and was about to try to chase down the issue, when i noticed that the AC compressor wasn't even plugged in. I plugged it in and BAM!! AC works perfect! I don't know if a mechanic just forgot to plug it in after doing other work on the engine, or if it was intentional. I hope it was not the latter.
@fiberscan4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for showing me your isolation technique. I actually had corrosion on that plug above the clutch. Fixed now.
@aaronautry19813 жыл бұрын
I actually followed this technique in a similar fashion in my newly acquired 2001 Chevy trail blazer with the 4.3. You seemed to have almost the exact same vehicle or at least same looking engine. I have the exact same electrical issue. Previous owner told me it was low on pressure and needed to add some but I had to test all the connectors just to make myself content with that call. Unfortunately, I have three same issue as no power at all 0.00 volts going to the clutch. I had power at the low pressure switches. All my fixes and relays work properly. The pebbled now like he just confirmed for me is there's going to be a break somewhere and that's not going to be easy to find. I almost wish it was only a guide or relay.

Please answer this: So how did a wire get *cut* "while sitting at a stoplight"? Sounds and smells to me. I retired from the "repair" market years ago- for reasons of cheap, stupid people wanting free work- or trying to haggle my worth, or just plain lying to my face. I don't blame you one bit.
@SchrodingersBox8 жыл бұрын
Because, as was mentioned twice in the video quite clearly and also shown on my other video, it was an improperly done butt connection from a previous repair. I have seen this countless times- clean wire breaks like that at terms and connections. If you do this work with any regularity you will see this very often. If you really were in the repair market you would have seen this as well countless times.
@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP8 жыл бұрын
Schrodingers Box Yes- in 10 years I saw a few "repairs" that were done before they came into the Shop. Always fun- to hear the stories about who, what, and why. Bird's nests of bread twisters, paper masking tape, Duct tape, Scotch tape, bailing wire. I did hear you mention it looked like a Butt connector might have been used, and had simply broken at the improperly deep cut strip- but there was no view of that broken piece, or of you repairing it in the video. It seemed like you edited that part out. I did not see the "other video" you speak of. I really miss your stunning logic and methodical train of thought. Nice to see you again.
@SchrodingersBox8 жыл бұрын
HUBBABUBBA DOOPYDOOP Thanks man- sorry my answer maybe came off as brash but I misinterpreted your comment. There were several people who accused me of cutting the wire for sake of the video- as if I would do that on a customer's car (or need to do that). It pisses me off. My apologies bro.
@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP8 жыл бұрын
Forget about it. I got just as disgustipated as you about the whole mess- that's why I left, and started an entirely different career until I retired. Don't worry about what the kids here say- they're like flies on a turd.

Especially cars from the 90's (like mine) that are now 20+ years old. Resistors and relays have been baked for decades and fail....wiring gets brittle and fails.

Rev up your engines! lol - First 5 minutes of nothing but rambling on about nothing! The first thing I and most people do is go to is the fuse box and swap relays, duh! Not hounding or arm chair diagnosing, but that sort of diagnosis is simple and yes it is obvious to just about everyone!
