A brilliant series I think. Perhaps more could have been said about Schubert's Dionysian side- his heavy drinking, violent outbursts and reckless pursuit of sensual pleasure. After all, this aspect of his personality eventually cost him everything.

what a wonderful series by Graham Johnson! not sure you are right about Urania - read Romans chapter 1 (whilst listening to Schubert's Benedictus from the f major Mass).

Amazing that a personality from the Anglo/American world is so fine focused on Schubert as the terrible German language is necessary to understand the personality of Schubert. Andras Schiff had similarly studied all what Schubert had composed and what had been written about him. The most mysterious song by Franz Schubert is however the song : „Der Doppelgänger „ written bei Heinrich Heine. Until today present psychology has not reached the level to understand the meaning of this song and you need knowledge of Indian spirituality to understand that unanswered emotions can take a hidden independent form with the image of the suffering original. Andras Schiff tells us that this song is by far superior to anything ever composed by Wagner.

As far as I'm aware Schiff considers "Der Doppelgänger" more dramatic than anything ever composed by Wagner, not strictly superior ("[...] to me there is more drama in these two minutes than in the complete output of Richard Wagner."). However, it seems safe to say that he does not exactly like Wagner. Also what is your problem with the German language?
