When pianist and author Gary Goldschneider played all 32 of Beethoven's sonatas at a single sitting, someone remarked to him afterward, "It must take a great strength to carry off such a feat." Goldschneider replied, "It takes relaxation." A voice teacher friend of mine told me that all vocal training aims at relaxing the throat. Just listen to the relaxation with which Fischer-Dieskau uses his wonderful instrument. It allows total openness for the songs to come through him in their full purity and power. Such a feast!

Richter's piano does the singing and Fischer-Dieskau provides the texting and the colour, while both meet in the Dramaturgy of each little jewel. A culmination of what harmony and phrasing can achieve, when both geniuses are at their absolute peak!

What marvels you can find on youtube! Here we have two supreme artists communing with Schubert. So interesting to compare the performing styles: Richter with the intensity and hair trigger responses of a big cat, Fischer-Dieskau relaxation personified, channeling the myriad charater changes. Must have been quite something to have heard them live. Thank you for sharing this treasure.

Hey Zina & Everyone............. Actually, THINK a moment about criticizing a "THUMBS-DOWN" for this video,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,(which personally I think is excellent, btw.) Did it ever occur to you? ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Maybe a "THUMBS-DOWN" is not for this PERFORMANCE? Maybe it's for something else? Like, maybe they do not like ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, -- the sound quality of this particular upload? -- the video quality? -- the piano playing (but they LOVE the singing, or vice versa)? -- the fact that someone's copyright is being violated by the upload? -- the fact that the uploader did not provide texts of the poems Schubert used ,,,,,,,,,,,,,or even the names of the authors? -- OR A COMBINATION of all or some of the above? Personally,,,,,,,,,,,,,,while I LOVE this performance by two of the greatest musicians of my lifetime ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I cannot give the vid the highest rating. The poem texts should be provided -- or at very least the poets' names. The sound-mixing or microphone placement is off. Dietrich sounds great; Stanislav -- not so much. All the same, I rated "THUMBS-UP". But maybe for someone else, the balance comes out the opposite. So ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, a THUMBS-DOWN is not "inconceivable". We may not agree,,,,,,,,,,,,but at least it is a reasonable debate!
