The concert halls were closed. The Pandemic felt - as if inside a winter journey: isolated, with the inner drama of the individual. Like poetry resonating wildly, the pandemic encouraged wanderings into uncharted emotional territory.
Artistic director of the Mountainview Festival of Song and Chamber Music, Kathleen van Mourik, felt we could still be creative in November 2020 and perform Schubert’s Winterreise (A Winter’s Journey) in a small group -a baritone, four pianists, a recording engineer, and an artist.”
Schubert’s Winterreise is a timeless trip, one filled with feelings found in the depths of the human heart: despair, dreams of the past, the premonition of death, hope; as well as the presence of nature - rustling leaves, storms, icicles, frozen tears.
Our version of Winterreise is set in Alberta. Kathleen invited visual artist Eveline Kolijn to film those scenes and incorporate her art. That set Eveline on a journey to reinvent her body of art and to position it in the Alberta Landscape, to give it the voice of a transformational journey; on changing feelings of love; existential questions and changes in the environment.
