A very lovely performance of Grieg’s unjustly neglected early work. Grieg himself suppressed his symphony but posterity has ignored his unwarranted embarrassment of what was a student exercise.

Grieg should have been PROUD of this symphony! (He did arrange mvt 2 for piano duet as Op. 14)

An interesting fact: after Grieg’s demise, among his manuscripts was discovered sketches for Symphony No. 2, subtitled as ‘In Spring’. Despite his neglectful attitude on this early Symphony in C minor, approaching it as a study exercise, Grieg still seemed to value the work as he numbered the unfinished ‘In Spring’ as his Second [Symphony].

Apparently in the 1880s he started a piano concerto...in B minor...but abandoned it. The A minor concerto is a hard act to follow!
