Wer senkt bei so einer Aufführung den Daumen? Man sollte wirklich dankbar sein, daß solche Konzerte im Netz zu sehen sind. So hat man wenigstens was von den Zwangsgebühren, die einem vom ÖRR abgepresst werden.

This is an exciting, dramatic account of Schumann's Fourth, so much so that it not only left me invigorated, but also a little tense. It is a tightly and economically constructed work that perhaps needs less rigid tempi and a little more room to breathe. It gave me the impression that Janowski didn't go much below the music's surface. It's definitely more a "classic" than a "romantic" view, although Herreweghe's rendition which I recently enjoyed has much the same character, but with more of a relaxed aura. It makes for a fascinating comparison, and causes me to wonder which performance I would value more over an extended period of time. I might be surprised.

Beautiful performance on the beautiful work. Fourth is the most lyrical and bittersweet symphony by Schumann, I especially like the second theme of the fast section of finale, starting at 22:46. The composer’s life was shadowed by mental health problems and those are clearly present, again especially in the finale (agitated ”screams” by the full orchestra). Schumann’s colleague and friend, Johannes Brahms, preferred the original version and was leading its publication against Clara’s wishes. Interesting historical facts lies behind the music.

Probably the shortest slow movement in any symphony - only four minutes long.
Does anyone know who the lead flutist is? I have seen her several times and she is a class performer!

This symphony is from an era when melody and harmonious sound had a very high value in constructing any work. Not any more - all we get is weird, unintelligible rhythmic patterns and percussive noise. Classical music is dead - for now. Composers are no longer inspired - they have become engineers, not musicians like Bach, Mozart, and Brahms.

Die Interpretation hat mich nicht berührt, leider. Falscher Augenblick, falsche eigene Stimmungslage ?, was auch immer...
