The exposition of the first movement probably has to be the shortest in the entire history of the genre, being even shorter than the first movements of Berlioz' Symphonie fantastique and Harold en Italie. I find this piece very original and I loved it since the first time I heard it.

That notwithstanding, this is a glorious symphony. Many years ago I had a classmate who would practice the Scherzo at school (presumptively for an audition) and I thought this was a terrifying piece, but after listening to it myself I appreciate the emotional weight and musical depth...

Yeah, orchestras love to take this as an audition piece and it is a PAIN to practice. All those diminished arpeggios make it really hard to get it in tune, not even talking about the sheer speed of random string crossings you have to do. I am also currently practicing it for an audition and I find it even harder than Don Juan😭
