A stunning recording made in 1938, within a year of Menuhin receiving a copy of the score (which had been hidden in the Prussian State Libary, due to Joachim's suppression of the concerto since its composition in 1854, and came to light in 1934 as a result of a seance, if you believe that). Menuhin is only 22 years old here and in full possession of his formidable powers.

The up tempo and the passion are stunning.

I heard James Ennis play this four days ago in Birmingham, England. Wonderful as one would expect from James. But, however, on the other hand this recording with Sir John on baton and Yehudi on fiddle is a real revelation and really touching. Menuhins' reputation is marred by his bowing problems in later life but this recording demonstates clearly the talent that Menuhin was blessed with.

Interesting! Have you listened to Sayaka Shoji’s interpretation? her rendition was well-received and I love it. Thanks!

When he plays like this he was! His later performances not up to this standard. He was also one of the greatest men of our time!

Maybe the greatest violinist ever....

Maybe, but most definitely not. Not even the best in the 1930'ies.

@@MrDvdelft I do not imagine that Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaïkovski, Mendelssohn (et al!) wrote their oeuvres as competitions for future violinists... nor do I suppose that their preference, if any, for the interpretations of Stern, Oistrakh or Francescati (et al!) would necessarily have matched yours! Try to judge less... and enjoy more!
