No one plays Schumann as Walter does. What he does with sound and pedal is near the edge of magic.

Beethoven: the piano is an inferior instrument Gieseking: No, listen, it isn’t

I don't think beethoven said that

As Arrau said, the greatest performance of what’s become my favorite Schumann work, and one that elicits an emotional identification often missing from Gieseking’s Beethoven and even his Debussy. The poetry is heart stopping and if Gieseking occasionally bangs elsewhere I suspect Robert did too. Raul Doblas Soler comments below that although reissued in 1951 this is Gieseking’s wartime performance.

They are the same recording, published twice

Raul, don’t have them both to compare but it seems you’re absolutely right.

One of the greats. I have known this performance my school days in 1970's. Cortot, Arrau and Kempff are all good as well..

Wonderful... But on Schumann cortot is almost unequalled..

I love this recording. Even Arrau said, that he was impressed by Giesekings Davidsbündlertänze (Arrau was himself a great Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann pianist).
@relax22342 жыл бұрын
Claudio Arrau said, he only heard Davidsbündlertänze played great once, this was by Gieseking.

My teacher, Herman Godes, studied with him after WWII.... He told me, true story, that Gieseking milked cows to strengthen his piano hands. One of my fav recordings, have it in vinyl. Check out Herman Godes too. Also, that he was huge like a butcher, but what a pianissimo he had.

Immense pianiste, un peu oublié hélas, sauf des mélomanes avertis, immense version de cette sublime œuvre du génie fabuleux qu'est Schumann

Why is it a semitone down?
@molocious Жыл бұрын
The other recordings are a semitone up. It's all relative. Who' s right? Ask yourself if the semitone difference affects your reception of the spirit of the music.

Too heavy on the keys. I prefer Arrau's interpretation.

Judith Marie I agree. Arrau is the greatest Schumann interpreter for ever.

Well, Arrau himself was in awe of Gieseking's performance of this work.
