Great review - super helpful, thanks! I think with the paragraph format vs the verse-by-verse, the latter can be far easier if you have any eye sight or neurological issues. Possibly for other conditions/illnesses, reading issues too. I suffer from chronic migraine, and the fact the Topaz has verse by verse and much better spacing, means it is easier to read than a dense text paragraph. Space is always helpful with neuro stuff!

Love your reviews. Thanks for all you do. I have both a Topaz and a Schuyler and there are things I like about both. The verse by verse in the Topaz is wonderful. The look and feel of the Schuyler to me takes the cake. I also find the layout easy to read as well. Either one of these will serve anyone well I feel. I plan to study each of them more in depth this weekend. Look like it’s going to be cold in Alberta. Good weekend to spend in Gods word.

I have a few Quentel's already and they are wonderful. The Cambridge seems to be on par with it. After watching the review.....I still don't know which way I'll go. I see the black Quentel with red ribbons and page gilding that looks very sharp that may end up winning the day just for the look.

Thanks Tim. So helpful. Even though I prefer a more poetic layout of the Psalms like the Quentel, the Topaz does offer, at least in the NKJV, capital letters throughout the Psalms indicating where the next line of poetry would begin if it had retained that format. This helps a little. Just received my NKJV Topaz Green goatskin this morning! Love it! Next on my list, something speckled (Allan).

Update - I LOVE the Cambridge Topaz. It's got everything I like...verse by verse, (perfect for Bible study class), 2-column text, and words of Christ in red. The goatskin is every bit as wonderful as the Schuyler. The paper, although I'd love to have it in a thicker GSM, is so silky smooth, I find myself gliding the palm of my hand over the page while in Bible study. It's actually smoother than the Quentel. It's now my main Bible, although I go back and forth between them, as well as checking out different versions. I highly recommend it if you like the format.

Thank you for all of this great info on comparing the Schuyler Quentel and Cambridge Topaz. I went back and forth for a while, and I was preferring the verse-by-verse format of the Cambridge at first. I also would like to have Christ’s letters in red. The Topaz is also $30 more expensive. Hard choice, but thank you for comparing them! It was great insight. I ended up choosing the Quentel in Imperial Blue goatskin. I believe it’s quality is virtually unrivaled. Also, I love the layout, even though it’s not verse-by-verse, it is about the most clean and readable 2-column, paragraph style format I’ve seen. I like how clean and crisp it is, without much wasted space, and the references are there at the bottom without being distracting. I also love the red letter paragraph distinctions, the separate poetic format, and the larger print. All in all, it could be perfect with red letter for the words of Christ - but that’s my preference and not everyone’s. It was the better value per dollar, I believe. However, I don’t think one of these Bibles is “better” than the other, but rather it just boils down to personal preference related to the text formatting. I, myself, might’ve chosen differently if I didn’t already have an NASB in verse-by-verse format that I use to follow along with sermons. That is an AMAZING format for following along, finding your place, or pulling specific versus out. I hardily recommend that everyone own at least one Bible in a verse-by-verse format for their library!

Hi Tim, great review / comparison. I own both & my only complaint with both bible companies is that neither offers a NKJV w/o a red letter text. The current trends in NT textual criticism seem to be moving us all towards the more traditional Greek text as reflected in the NKJV consequently l think it would be nice to have a premium bible black text NKJ option. Great review. Thanks. My Quentel has a few notes above the reference notes. I think they are translation notes though. I've got the gray leather one with silver / red paint and red ribbons. I really like it; but I like most of their Bibles. Also, My Cambridge Bible text (different Bible) always seems significantly darker, and so I can get by with a smaller font. I've got a Cambridge Concord KJV Bible with smaller font that, for me is easier to read than even the 11 point font of the Quentel. Might be just me, but it looks like they put more ink on the page.

I realize I'm commenting on an old video - are there any other ESV reference bible editions with cross references in the outer margin and a font of at least 10pts that has close to premium or premium binding other than the Topaz? I love what I see in both of these, but I just don't care for cross references on the bottom. I will most likely get the Topaz, and I won't have more than one at this price point so I'm taking my time searching.

For my first premium bible I got the Topaz in no small part due to this video. The deciding factor was the verse by verse, I had never used one much at all and it just seemed better in my mind. After almost exactly 2 months I have ordered the Quentel, I just can’t get used to the verse by verse. Everything else about it exceptional, ZERO complains. I’ve been using a study bible for nearly 20 years and I guess I can’t get used to the new (to me) style. My mind just runs it all together, I rarely recognize OT quotes. It is however faster/easier to navigate. But for me It’s like I’m trying to read it like one long paragraph. I guess I’m just stuck in my ways, I can’t kick my translation either. Their are some I like better, until I use them for about a week then they just don’t “feel” right. It all works out though, now my wife has the Topas, she is used to it coming from a Thompson Chain and much prefers the verse by verse. As I think I would if I would have started with it 20 years ago. Anyway, I really appreciate the time and effort that goes into these videos. Thank You! 👍

@@timwildsmith I prefer the format of the Quentel for reading vs the Topaz. The paragraph format and the references and footnotes at the bottom of the page allow a more efficient “reader”. The VBV format of the Topaz would be great for a pretty portable teaching/preaching Bible though. The typesetting was real nice on that Bible. My NKJV Topaz came in yesterday and it has multiple misprints. Old Testament quotes in Mark are italicized but nowhere else that I could see. Sadly I didn't find this out until I already wrote my name in the presentation page, but I have let Evangelical Bible know about this. This is a huge oversight. Someone may think those quotes are supplied words (because the NKJV uses italics for supplied words). Disappointed in Cambridge's lack of proofing!

Love the verse by verse in the Cambridge, but I also like the separation of poetry format as you say, in the Schuyler. The 10 point font in the Topaz is acceptable, but 11 point is a bit better. These two Bibles are very similar but each still unique.

Ok, an update. I have gotten several translations now in both Cambridge (Topaz in blue) and Schuyler Quintel (also in Blue), both large print. I liked Cambridge best originally, but now I slightly prefer Schuyler. Why? The Cambridge, while well made, has verse-by-verse layout, and is very high quality; with all the notations, reference marks, and footnote marks plus a slightly smaller font, well, it isn't as easy to read for me as the Schuyler. The crowding effect of the accessory marks and the layout is not as much in some parts as in others, but it is distracting. They are both fantastic in their own way. You cannot go wrong with either.

Schuyler uses ALL of page. And with RED accents is easy to navigate. Since CAMBRIDGE did NOT include ALL of NKJV notes and references. But in the ESV version there are lots of notes. And probably NKJV also. Depending on which part 9f bible. Topaz has RED in verse #'s so makes It easy to find. Both bibles are beautiful.

Having both I would say the Topaz edges out the Quentel as my main teaching/preaching Bible simply because it is verse by verse. Once Schuyler comes out with the Stridon in ESV I assume it will edge out the Topaz simply because Schuyler in my opinion just builds a better Bible than Cambridge. I honestly think Schuyler is the best Bible around right now. I know Schuyler is working on the Treveris in ESV but I do not think it would lend itself well to pulpit ministry for me. Very exciting times in Bible publishing!

Does the Schuyler Quintel or personal size Quintel NASB have red letters? I'm looking for an NASB premium personal size with red letters and cross references. I'd really prefer having red letters, if Schuyler doesn't make that, do you have any other recommendations?

Ok Tim I’ve watched this and I would say you’re right. The paper in the Topaz is not more opaque than the paper in the Quentel. I think they might be about the same. Do you know if the paper in both of these bibles is from the same source or are they from different places? I know they were both bound and printed at Royal Jongbloed but…

Schuyler is a cut (or two) above Cambridge certainly. The only thing I see missing with Schuyler is a verse by verse option. Cambridge deserves their respect certainly as a quality and consistent publisher. But if we are talking premium bibles I feel like they clearly need to be behind Schuyler and Allan

The best value NKJV is the Nelson Preaching bible. I have the Quentel and the Nelson and I would say both of these are a better option than the Topaz. The lack of a poetry setting in the Topaz is a deal-breaker. Also, at $240.00, the Topaz too expensive.

I see. Anyway, good job! One of my favorite videos of yours was when you compared all four premium large ESV Bibles: Quentel, Topaz, Allan Reader, and Omega. It’s even saved on my phone for easy reference. As for me, I don’t have any of those because they are truly hard to come by in our country which makes it all the more expensive, considering they are already expensive to begin with. I would love to have a Cambridge ESV Topaz, a Schuyler NKJV Quentel, and a Holman CSB Verse-by-verse (the one you also reviewed). Those would be my dream Bibles! God bless and thank you for your wonderful reviews!
