Hey Pawel! I believe you have to see a decimal fraction and then Schwab calculates the dollar amount for you. All slice sales and purchases are at market orders, not limit orders.

I absolutely hate Schwab’s app, the % numbers they put up doesn’t represent where i stand on my stocks and when i sell a stock it remains on my list just cluttering it up making it more difficult... I would never recommend the Schwab app... NEVER! Webull is by far better.

If you continue to buy slices, will they eventually add up to become a whole share? For example, if you already own 1 whole share of Google at $1000, then a few months later, you decide to purchase a second share of Google at $1000, but instead of paying for a whole share, you decide to buy a slice of that second share at $100. Then a month later, you decide to add another slice at $100, then buy eight more $100 slices until you build up to $1000. Will your account finally show that you own 2 whole shares of Google at $1000 each, or will it show that you own 1 whole share plus multiple slices of $100 each for the second share totaling $1000? I hope my example makes sense.

Hey vidform! Yes, as you keep buying fractions of shares they do eventually sum up to one entire share. This isn't a problem for Schwab to compute.

Hey Jake, great video! I love that you are teaching people a smart way to invest. You might want to extract the TVIX comment. It's not priced based on the inverse of the S&P 500. To follow-up, I researched a little more and it does appear that this feature (fractional shares) is only available with actual stocks & not ETFs, mutual funds or anything like that. I believe the way Schwab worded it was that they hope to make it available in the future. (As a side note, I have found fractional share purchasing of ETFs possible with both Fidelity and M1 Finance.)

Nice! Found out about it yesterday, today just bought GOOG, MSFT, and MA. Still waiting for FB and AMZN to come down (and maybe BA below 140). One con is you have to re-add your slices to buy more--should've implement a slice list to make it easier. Overall a great feature to average into the market--too high to buy full shares.

I know with m1finance you can build a pie and any new money you invest redistributes into the pie which makes life easy, but I wonder how schwab lets you invest more into an existing 10 slices?

Hey James! You can buy as much more as you want given the $$$ amount, and Schwab automatically converts that in to fractions of shares to add to your existing. No need to sell and re-buy them every time. You can dollar cost average in to your existing 10 slices.

Hey Jose! A "market order" is just you placing an order to buy and sell something and your broker fills it as fast as possible at the first available price on the New York Stock Exchange. A "limit order" is you telling your broker a specific price you are willing to buy or sell at.

Hey Fernando! Yes, you can buy fractional shares of stocks with Schwab right now. Or you can wait to buy a whole share of an ETF. I always recommend a simple low cost total stock market ETF like VTI.

Schwab slices is awful compared to M1 or Robinhood. Limited to 10 stocks, $5 min, S&P 500 only. So no Tesla, Zoom, Square, etc... It’ll be good to balance current Schwab broker accounts, but I wouldn’t open a Schwab account for slices. Much better options out there.

This is nothing new! There was a similar product in the past called SHARE BUILDERS which allowed you to buy partial shares of stock. Today, Share Builders is now E Trade and does not allow partial shares.

FYI. Fidelity system is so much better. There is fractional share limit orders. You can almost do any stock. It isn't perfect. You must do a fractional order though their mobile app (at least last time i checked) so you can't do it through their website & you must submit the order while the market is open. No submitted the order 15 minutes before their market orders. But overall i love it. Only reason i'm still with schwab is because fidelity doesn't have ESA accounts.

Hey John! Yep, you can go through this process as many times as you like (6 and then 5). You can also just ignore the "slice" gimmick and just individual buy fractional shares of whatever you want for however much you want one at a time. Cheers!

Hey Ernie! Schwab does not have a 10 position cap overall. It is a 10 cap per market purchase transaction. If you want to setup auto payments of $500 dollars and split it evenly to up to 10 companies, you can do that. But you can just as easily setup another purchase transaction for another 10. You can also just ignore the whole slice concept and buy fractional shares of single companies as much as you want. You can fractional shares of hundreds of companies if you like. You just have to buy them through Schwab's trade ticket separately.

Good stuff Jake, Ill be looking into setting up a couple custodial accounts for my kids and creating their slices. Hopefully they will have a feature where I can auto pay each of their accounts monthly and it automatically keep investing in the pie that we come up. Unfortunately... no, not a this time. This interface is temporary. I can see Schwab updating this stock slice experience soon. They want to allow auto investing and that will HAVE to include saved companies.

Good overview Jake! I think Schwab did a good job with this feature, and the term “stock slices” is meant for mass appeal and to attract the beginner investor who may not understand the term “fractional shares”. Ultimately though, I think simply allowing us to buy fractional shares by entering decimals or dollars when buying stocks is the finish line, not this feature. Now I’m waiting for a good opportunity to get me a slice of Amazon stock.

I'm still trying to understand this whole investing and slice thing. So say I did the same thing like you just did, buy 5 for $5 each. I own fractions only, can I come back to the same ones next week and put another $25 to own more of the fraction of the same shares? Like the apple, I put 5 and then next week I put another 5 or just apple itself, I wanna put $50 more into it. Is that possible? If yes, tell me how.

Hey Jay! Yes, you can do exactly as you said. You can do whatever you want. You just have to input them separately each time. Add as much $$$ dollar amount you want to whatever stocks you want to keep adding to at anytime and Schwab automatically figures out what fraction of a share you have.

Hey Richard! You can put the same 10 in or just a single stock or do whatever combination you want. Schwab's "slice" function is a gimmick, if you want to always just do one company at a time you can do that.

Hey Ade! You can sell any of your slices individually if you want and buy any other stock slice you want for any amount over $5 individually if you want. The "slices" gimmick is really just marketing, you can do everything individually. Schwab does not charge fees for buying and selling.

If people want an effective and easy investing strategy, they should just buy S&P 500 index funds every month and hold them forever. I don't see the value in robo-advising. For people who want to keep it simple, you can't beat the return at the cost of just buying and holding VOO.

Just go to buy stocks like your normally would. You can buy more at any dollar amount whenever you want.

Which means you'll have to run through the platform each time entering the same securities if you want to buy more. Trade Source and SSE won't allow fractional buys but if you want to close your Slice positions you have to do it through TS or SSE. A little clunky on Schwab's part if you ask me. Hope they implement a better solution in the future.

Hey Elmer! If you want to equally invest the same amount in to the same 10 or fewer stocks every month, just deposit money in your account and buy a certain $$$ amount. You can't automate purchases yet like you can with a mutual fund from your checking account, but I am sure that ability is coming soon.

@@JakeBroeThank for the reply. I have M1 (dividend portfolio) and assumed Schwab adopted the same scheme. So basically, on CS make individual stock slice transactions (up to 10 stocks) each time you want to DCA, instead of just "buying" the slice to add money into slices like on M1? I feel CS can deff compete with M1 if they invest more in this feature. One can hope. Thanks again, Jake.

Fractional shares are a Godsend! M1 Finance does fractional shares starting from $1 so lower entry than Schwab's $5.

I have a few questions which i cant find anywhere on the internet. I only ever bought stocks and etfs at full price on Robinhood. Fully moved to Schwab this week and started in Indexs. Still learning about Fractional Shares. They sound really nice but at 5$ (Robinhodd $1) that is the amount that any stock can go down. Example: I used to own LPL (LG) Stock bought it at 6 and sold around 17. If you were to look at it now it is under 5$. The amount might go up might not. Even thought these are S&P 500 stocks which will probably be around for a long time, prices always vary depending on the weather. If a fractional stock that I bought goes really down for a few years would it should up as a negative or do i loose the fractional share? Ex: BRK.B was 280$ when I purchased 5$ of the stock. Its now 190$ that means my 5$ share would be -90$ or -85$. If the stock goes up and i want to buy a full, do i need to pay the full price at the amount i purchased the fractional share?

I realized 90% of my holdings in M1 are in the S&P 500, so I decided to move my funds from M1 over to Schwab. I'll keep my ETF shares in Fidelity, since Fidelity offers fractional shares for ETFs, S&P 500 and non-S&P 500 stocks.

You can place as many as you like. The "slice" feature of ten is just for convenience, but you can do this as many times as you like for as many companies as you like.

Hey Alex! Yes, Schwab has said they will enable this functionality later this year. They wanted to just start with S&P 500 companies first, but I'm sure small cap and ETFs are coming soon!
