If you are into reading amazing scifi books that no other youtubers talk about (and nowadays most talk about the same books over and over, which is not so useful), check out the "Species Imperative" and "Web Shifters" trilogies by Julie E. Czerneda - they are space operas. She's not a new author, far from it, but no other book tubers talk about her work. I loved Species Imperative, and I'm finishing the third Web Shifters book and loving the series.

If you liked Downbelow Station which is the deep end of her pool you will like the other CJ Cherry works. She is one of my big influences. I recommend her first series (The Morgaine Series ) which starts with Gate of Ivrel. It begins with what you think is a sword and sorcery novel but then you get the paradigm shift. Partway into Refraction now. Really liking it. I’m looking forward to seeing how all the different temporal threads tie together. Incidentally based on his description of the chess games Welker doesn’t know how to play chess. I kept thinking, that’s not how it would go; that makes no sense, etc. But I’m a big chess nerd.

@chrisconnors7418

@@TheShadesofOrange It was Chapter 9 (Feb 8th, 1988). It's where Tim and Jo play chess and he finds that he has a "refractive" advantage. Let me know what you think about the games, and if you're interested, I'll let you know what I saw. I've finished the book now. Enjoyable. Not sure if I'll start another book tonight (it's 12:05 a.m., so technically it's morning---probably shouldn't--I'll just go to sleep instead, soon as I finish downloading the library books that just came in: The Blood-dimmed Tide, sequel to the Widening Gyre, which I haven't read yet; and The Fervor by Alma Katsu). Edit to add: A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking just came in too (T. Kingfisher). Sounds quirky.

Through Hoopla my Library has Repo Virtual available, but I noticed it's the first time I've ever seen a one star rating.🤔 I'm not sure exactly how the rating system works as far as my local library versus a national Hoopla system etc.... but found that odd. Since they have it in Audio form I do plan to getting to it eventually... maybe then try and boost the stars? Lol... But there were one or two others you mentioned available too, so we'll see.

I have heard of Refraction and The Rig (both from you! 😂) And have read none of these. I actually just bought Refraction, Ship of Fools, Empire of Silence, and Leviathan Wakes because of you lol. I may have already told you this, can't remember, but anyway, I know you weren't a huge fan of Dune but I highly recommend reading the prequels, starting with the oldest trilogy which starts with The Butlerian Jihad. They are written by his son and I found them very fun and the writing style more accessible 😀. Also I recommend the Ender's Game series by Orson Scott Card. After Ender's Game they branch off into two seperate series, what happened on Earth with Ender's best friend, Bean and What happens on a different planet that Ender ends up on. Both are great 😀.

I like that you highlight lesser known books. There are some real gems that deserve to be more widely read. Last year I read Mars Crossing by Geoffrey Landis (ignore the hype that says it is like The Martian---it isn't aside from the fact it deals with Mars). I wouldn't say it was great, but it was enjoyable. I do think the author changed his mind about a crucial plot point, but then forgot to remove a sentence that supported the now defunct plot point. Downloaded The Light Years, Virtual World, Crashing Heaven. Couldn't find The Mars Strain in ebook, audio, or hard copy at any of the libraries I can access; nor is it in the catalogue of our local used bookstore. Edit: I can get it for free at Amazon if I start the 30-day free Audible trial. Have Refraction (thanks to your earlier recommendation), Repo Virtual (downloaded Sept so that might be your recommendation again), Stolen Earth (Dec 2021). Really liked The Rig (yep, your rec).

I've heard of them all, most thanks to your channel, but not read any yet. Currently, re-reading Stranger in a Strange Land. One question, how "sci-fi" is The Light Years? If you changed the location to a small town in Kansas in 2022, would it still be the same (if that makes sense)? That book is the only one I am unsure about. Thanks for the video and list!🚀
@TheShadesofOrange
@TheShadesofOrange 2 жыл бұрын
I still need to reread Stranger. And happy that you've caught a lot of these books in previous videos. With light years, it deals a lot with the concepts of light speed travel in terms of time, but outside of that piece of hard science the story itself doesn't feel much like a space opera.
