I really enjoyed this. The debate in the comments about whether it's a story of an impulsive woman who messes things up because she didn't listen to the man and got lost vs a story about a man who didn't trust a woman to fix the problem and she finally does is very interesting. I'm more in the latter group - with a side of the idea that she wanted to take her time to really look around while he wanted to stick to just checking radiation levels (and whatever else was on the checklist) and then move on. I'd enjoy expanding the worldbuilding so we could understand why some places looked desolate and others looked beautiful, and why she seemed so captivated by the fish as though she hadn't seen anything like them before. Does the suit just teleport through space or does it teleport through time, too, like a Tardis? Was the suit only supposed to teleport in space but her corrections made it go through time also? What will happen to her now that the suit is shut down? All interesting questions, right?

There are other Dust films that pull a switch at the end and it's some kid's imagination and I sort of thought that's where this was going. I was grasping for reasons to care about her survival thinking, maybe this is the little sister who always has to pull the wagon and finally got a turn in the wagon and now she won't let it go, with a ViewMaster and she's just clicking away at the worlds she would visit and her brother is yelling that he wants his turn... Only then, in my own imagination, did I think it would be good for her to survive. Otherwise, I was kind of hoping for that jump in front of the bus to put it to rest. Gotta say, to start with apocalypse and dance through some aquarium, a zen garden, and a busy street was a little weird. Was this supposed to be parallel earths?

this evoked a strange feeling for me toward the main character. i disliked the character immensely due to her immature arrogant behavior but was relieved she survived at the end. hopefully the experience humbles her greatly. and, as you can see from the comments, it did not end how anyone predicted. Which i feel is a good thing. some called it pointless, cliffhanging, no twists or explanation. which is exactly why it's interesting. The creator could've continued building this unlikeable character only to send her off in a predictable fashion most would've been satisfied with. anyway, i think it's definitely deserving of some praise.

I get to be that guy that points out continuity errors. When Gill is teleported to a new area, that suit shouldn't look as if she had been there for a considerable amount of time. Immediately dusty in the desert, then the dust is gone when she teleports to the mountains, etc. I know it's minor, but details like that can make a viewer wonder if, instead of teleporting, her consciousness is just being moved to a different host body, which would give the film a totally different meaning.
@mrjoewaterford2 жыл бұрын
Maybe when she teleports it cleans the suit up. In theory.
@Punnikin19692 жыл бұрын
@@mrjoewaterford If you'll notice, the opposite is happening. With each new area she teleports to, the suit shows the effects of being in the new climate for quite some time, even immediately after arrival. The suit would have to be getting dirty, wet, clean, etc. instantly, as if it was there before the teleport occurred.

I feel like just as this started to get interesting it ended, leaving me hanging waiting for some sort of closure. I feel like this had a lot of potential for an interesting twist or substantial event that could have lead to a quality resolution, but instead it fizzled out with a lucky dead battery ending. What needed to happen was a definitive moment after the suit lost power that either showed her arrogance or competence. For an arrogance ending the film could have shown that this situation was so far over her head that she couldn't solve how to jump again on her own. That would require her to get the suit powered enough to reestablish a connection with the "inventor," to get a good enough fix for the suite to get her a jump home. For a competent ending the power loss would show that as the pilot and co-creator of the suite, she was the only one who could possibly get herself out of this situation. This would require that she got the suite powered on, without random jumps, then fixed the jump system without help, and maybe even have her reestablishing radio contact to inform the guy she was jumping home before jumping home at the end. Both of these plot solutions resolve random luck point where it currently ends in a much more story driven, and hopefully satisfying way.

About 90% of DUST videos are producers/directors trying to get funding. That's why they're 5 minute videos with three minutes of trailers. It's pretty rare that it's a full and satisfying story.
@billyoung95382 жыл бұрын
@@darrennew8211 That is also why many don't get funded further. With a concept pilot the point is to hook people with a short story, but leave enough room for a much bigger story. If a director can't tell a satisfying story that hooks the viewer in 5 to 10 minutes, then how can one expect them to tell a bigger and more complex story with more time? While this concept had room for a bigger story, it failed to hook me with the story presented. That doesn't mean it couldn't be reworked to fix this story, but, to me, the story as it currently stands isn't quite there yet.

Good points. This could've been much more interesting, it's one of those "oh no, everything's happening to me" characters / plots, where nothing really happens in the movie. Did she really change anything with all the frantic typing there? Can't really tell. And, have to say it, cliché scene of teleporting in front of oncoming traffic, but whatever. Some backstory on the suit, or the project itself, would've been good. Is she just teleporting around Earth, basically? Random planets? Again, can't really tell.
@billyoung95382 жыл бұрын
@@eleanorkahlo8829 that's one possiblity, but nothing cemented that as a fact, because her actions were in direct conflict with earlier information presented in the dialogue. She even acknowledged the information as seeming to be true otherwise the story looses even more tension because the fall scene wouldn't have actually been a real threat. There in lies part of the dissatisfaction of the current ending, but that part could be given a pass because that would require significantly more story development to use in a satisfactory fashion without feeling like a similar easy out to the dead battery.

Everyone I’ve read so far doesn’t like Gill. But the funny part is, that’s how well her character is written. She’s evoking some bad stuff from people, like a real person. If a character doesn’t evoke like, love, dislike, absolute hatred, respect, or just being a darn good villain, then the writing of that character failed. Only thing I don’t like is violence or profanity just there to be there. But a character you love to hate like this girl? Kudos to the writer who made her that way and the actress who made her disliked character shine. On film you obviously can show it. But if you’re just reading, and you just tell not show, your characters are flat and you don’t have any feelings about them and that’s harder to show enough to garner a feeling about a character. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

Is she teleporting to parallel Earths or just different locations on the same planet? Is time travel involved somehow (Earth at the beginning seems post-apocalyptic, yet we briefly glimpse a truck from our time)? How does she know it's safe to remove her helmet at the end? Goodness, everyone hatin' on this woman. I watched twice, and what I saw was someone desperate to escape a trap that she didn't even realize she was in at first. I don't just mean the suit. When she landed at the aquarium I could see the tension leaving her, and when she ended at the seashore and got the thing shut down, I could imagine her deciding not to start it up again, or to start it and send it back to her working partner, but without her. What others were seeing as chaos and troublemaking I was seeing as sheer desperation and panic, a need to escape something not yet fully understood. I wasn't sure she'd survive it. Desperation moves often don't end well. Don't know. I'm retired now, but from my mid thirties to my fifties, I watched the world change around me from a future to a trap, watched employers attain more and more power over people's freedom and range of options. With retirement, for me, being very much like finally getting that damn suit to stop. (And my God I feel for those coming up behind me, who never had the freedom I know we've lost.) So perhaps I just relate to that aspect of the story. I am grandma aged now, so I also noticed: in that last scene, when she's finally found some peace, she's really quite beautiful.

The film was entertaining but needed a beginning and some kind of backstory or direction instead of a girl in a suit just jumping from place to place. The jumps were nicely done and her suit was well made. A possible ending or alternate existence for her would likewise be interesting. I know, everybody has their own visualization of what they'd like to see but yours is yours as you see fit. We are just the audience chiming in. Best of continued success! Thank you!

Evidently this place jumping has the side effect of affecting one's hair length - at least on one's head.

is it only for me that the unbearable side of the main character makes the film unpleasant ?

Thought that last scene was going to be a rehash of the Quiet Earth. I feel there should have been repercussions for her recklessness. Either some unexpected discovery or she shares space with a brick wall.

Awesome visuals. Love the shots. Love the color grading. Love the Ant-Man vibe too! The man's lines could have been more natural, but Caitlin absolutely killed it. Great performance. Much love to the cast and crew from a fellow sci-fi storyteller.

The ending left me disappointed... I was curious to see how the issues were resolved. Instead, she ends up... somewhere and shuts the suit down and pulls of the helmet and... what? Well done otherwise. The jump effect was quite good. The variety of locations was impressive.

Thanks for watching! Yeah, always tricky to find a satisfying ending in a short. We ended up traveling all over the state of North Carolina for the locations- from the mountains to the beach.

What did I just watch? What was the point? If she was searching for an undamaged world, then why the childish bickering? If she was escaping some controlling freak, then why let him know that she was being disobedient? If she was being the Darwin Award candidate, then why no consequences? Camera work and effects are pretty, but a story needs more than that.

I really liked this short film. Great concept, and the video editing was good. The actress really portrayed the headstrong type. The lesson is that you can plow forward and be unreasonable, reckless, and stubborn but things will all work out in the end! I enjoyed it nonetheless. Thanks for sharing with the world!

Ha thanks for your take on it, Sound Hound. And thanks for watching!

Only problem is that that lesson is a fools lesson, and that headstrong mentality is usually a poor one with a garbage attitude to go with it. Things rarely just "work out in the end", that is a wishful dreamers' way of thinking.
