Every Friday we're going back in time to refresh some of our favorite DUST films!
When eleven year old Amy finds an old eighties video game magazine she dials the phone number displayed on the back, and in a strange cosmic glitch gets connected to Caesar Spinone, a video game call center employee in the year 1989.
"The Give and Take" by Anna Hopkins
More About "The Give and Take":
It’s a sunny Saturday afternoon, yet eleven-year-old AMY DROUIN has found herself faced with the excruciating task of alphabetizing hundreds of old CD’s in a dark basement. This is her punishment for hiding a failed math exam from her mom, and one she begrudgingly accepts. Upon discovering an old eighties Nintendo console among the mountains of cd’s, she abandons her duties and dives into a game, only to find herself stuck on an unbeatable level. It’s then that she comes across an old video game magazine and notices an advertisement for the a video game helpline set up to assist gamers get over their humps. She dials the number, and in a strange cosmic glitch is connected to CAESAR SPINONE, a twenty-six-year old game counsellor, in the year 1989. Caesar is a part time gamer, and full time rock n’ roll musician. We meet him on the eve of a major gig, one his boss won’t let him ditch his shift for. It’s when Amy and Caesar connect, albeit unaware through parallel universes, that they find common ground. Their successful communication results from a few miscommunications, but nonetheless leads them to help each other out with their respective, and often times similar plights.

It was a Nintendo controller. The game name was made up, and I don't remember any game looking quite like that. Kind of a spinoff from Mario Bros.

One Statement first: This was one heck of a feel-good video. It seems the lines got crossed and the Universe played a helping hand. Her telephone call seemed to go way back into the 1980s I'm so glad everything worked out for everyone involved! Whoever came up with this idea? You truly have a creative mind! This has to be one of my favorite videos ever! In 1980 I was 21. In 1990 I was 31.

OK, that was cute. But doesn't quite make the sci-fi cut, as there's not even a hint at an explanation of how the special thing happened. If it's not presented as explainable it's magic and therefore fantasy.

This was great! This looked like the original NES controller in 89 . If im not mistaken, I think the old Atari system had a joystick? Idk? My brother played Atari in the 70s & my other brother & I had the Nintendo console from 89'. The funny thing is I'm thinking to myself, goodness, I wonder how she got it working on the 1st try without blowing air into the back of it & clearing the dust away? The console for the 1989 original Nintendo systems looked like a VCR & you always had to blow in the back of those games to get the system to read them properly. However, instead of calling , my brother would drive me to the Nintendo repair center @ radio shack ... where you had the repair technicians OR sales associates but 1 person never did the job of both. I remember we would go grab something to eat from Hardee's across the street & not even 20 minutes & 5 bucks later, it was all done & repaired. We can translate that today to 8- 24hrs & $80 -100 bucks later...as they try upselling you some entirely new system for " ...just 150 bucks more than yours has just costs you in repairs " ...haha - these salesman/ technicians blow my mind ..smh. I miss those times. Much more simple & slower paced lifestyles. Thank you for the nostalgia ❤️ 🤙🏼

@Pp Ss oh you ain't kidding - not only the evolution but the price tag on gaming in the last 30 years unreal. Granted, I don't play them these days - ( to extra !! ...waaay to complicated to when attempting to beat a level haha) but catching my teenage son playing that Xbox - X series , just what I see in passing- the graphics , the storyline, the ability to play with others across the street or in another country , just all the details absolutely blow my mind. However, with the price tag on the consoles , the online set up plus the games to go with ... well, let's say my son will be enjoying this one for a few years to come, haha. This is why I miss the simplicity from back in the day. People my age are totally awe struck and content something as simple as headbutting bricks for coins 🤣 & easily get addicted to shooting flying ducks with a huge orange gun shaped controller...Storyline & plot not ever needed! Haha ....
