Heh, long before there was Steve, there was Jacques Cousteau diving with sharks, and "Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom" with this old guy sitting behind a desk with encyclopedias and such on shelves behind him. He would narrate, while some poor schmuck named Jim would be out in the field. "Now here's Jim out on safari, approaching some rhinos to get a better shot with the camera... Uh oh, rhinos are notoriously short tempered, they are charging. Jim, get back in the Rover! Look at the dent in the Rover."

Imagine the horror the aliens in the first story must have faced, they assumed all the torpedoes sent had, had someone in them, but if you listened to what the commander said in the end, he was the lone one sent to secure the ship before sending the others, aliens have likely not heard of decoys. As for the 2nd one, aliens had likely accessed some sort of entertainment file regarding some show or game, "a hale hero" makes it sound like something akin to halo, but with the comments regarding horrors faced with such ease, it almost made it sound like a show or game regarding demons, probably similar to Doom, if the aliens had witnessed stuff comparable to the later in the files, then it's no wonder the sane ones hadn't visited earth.

That's pretty stupid. Decoys or not one person is severely disadvantaged regardless of weaponry or armament when faced with multiple opponents. You only have one set of eyes and you can only face one direction at a time. This is such a problem that modern militaries teach that you should never go anywhere or do anything alone because odds are you will just die.
