Bonus college answer: Yes, you're gonna weigh more - but your mass will be lower.
@kimreevemorales67703 жыл бұрын
Hmm what do you mean?
@jimmy798893 жыл бұрын
@@kimreevemorales6770 Because your body is more dense. Farts are less dense than air so when a fart escapes, then you think of it like air is taking place of the fart. Since you are more dense, you weigh more.
@rojopantalones97913 жыл бұрын
Yes, because those farts have mass. By releasing them, you technically lose mass. And, because they're less dense than air, when you release them, as explained in the video, you become more heavy. Overall, you become more dense because you're losing something that's less dense. It has volume, so, when you release it, your volume goes down. Since the loss of mass is less than the loss of volume (because it's less dense than air and gases tend to have a high volume but low mass, hence low density), your volume decreases far more (relatively) than the change of mass, your relative density actually goes up. As he explained in the video, the more dense an object is, the less upward force from boyancy the object experiences. As a result, the downward force of gravity has a greater vector, AKA its force is greater, so the weight actually goes up. Weight =/= mass, but they are related. Weight is a function of mass and the gravitational force. If gravity is weaker, like it is on the Moon, you weigh less, even though your mass doesn't change. If gravity is stronger, like it is on Jupiter, you weigh more. Regardless of where you are, though, farting increases your weight but decreases your mass.
@ZenZooZoo3 жыл бұрын
Joe Schmole Good post but just a couple clarifications: you become more dense no matter what you fart out. Even if you farted Sulfur Hexaflouride, which is more dense than air, your density would still go up because you’ve replaced the gas in your body with the solids (intestines) around it. Your volume actually goes down slightly too.
@destroyer-fr4dz3 жыл бұрын
@@jimmy79889 It doesnt make sense. Density doesnt directly relate to how much you weigh

As a high school science teacher who has watched your videos for a long time, I love what you're doing here and your ultimate goal of becoming a teacher. With that said, I do have a quibble with today's livestream. Weight is the force due to gravity pulling down on an object, which is mass times acceleration. A scale that we step on doesn't actually measure this; it measures the net downward force on you, which, as you mentioned, would take into account buoyancy. Thus, you answered the question "If you fart how does the weight measured on a scale change?" not "Does farting make you weigh less?" The answer to the latter is yes, farting does make you weigh ever so slightly less. Farting removes a small amount of mass from your body and if you take a smaller mass times the same acceleration you get a smaller force due to gravity, or weight. Giving the answer you gave will likely lead to misunderstandings about what weight is. While I understand how you arrived at your answer and what you were saying you have to be careful with word choice in education so that you don't cause new misunderstandings in students.

When he talks about the "tug of war"between forces, I feel its important to point out that on the way up the buoyancy force is winning but when floating at the top buoyancy and gravity are tied.

Well done Mark! I loved the demo. Something I've always felt about how physics is taught is that it needs more tangible examples to connect the concepts with reality and you do a really good job. Definitely keep doing that when you officially become a teacher!

Precision is important and the answer to your question depends on how weight is defined. For the common definition that weight is mass times gravity, when you fart a tiny bit of mass leaves your body and you weigh less. If you define weight as the force measured by the operation of weighing it, now you have to introduce notions of support. I such cases then other forces like buoyancy can play a roll in determining the weight.

My employer coerced me into teaching an evening class at a local JC. The subject was Printed Circuit Board production - drilling and routing. I dreaded the thought. Thankfully I had taken a speech class in college so I at least had a clue on how to talk to 45 people. It turned out that I actually enjoyed the "give and take" between myself and the students. It was more rewarding than I expected.

ahh that’s so exciting you’re gonna be a teacher ! I wish you were my high school or middle school physics teacher. I wanted to be an architect since I was little but then I found out needed some level of physics knowledge at the time (it’s been almost 2 decades now 😅). my physics teacher deterred me from the subject of physics so much so I went through a bunch of degree/career changes. Im getting my 2nd grad degree now in something else I really love, but I can’t help but think of how different my life could have been if I had a physics teacher like you !! Gonna help a lot of students reach their various dreams !!
