1. Ants Are Strong
Ants can lift objects more than 10 to 50 times their bodyweight.
2. Ants Can Sting & Bite
Some species of ants bite and others can sting like fire and harvester ants.
3. Ants Have Jobs
Every ant in a colony has a specific role. Some forage for food, others feed larvae, and some are tasked with defending the nest.
4. Ants Don’t Have Ears
Ants use vibrations to pick up sounds using an organ located under their knee.
5. Ants Communicate Through Odor Signals
The pheromones they release alert other ants to food and danger. They smell these odors with their antennae.
6. Some Colonies Have Two Queens
Some ant species, like argentine ants, are known to have two queens, which makes for a large colony.
7. Zombie Ants Exist
A fungus attacks ants by taking control of their body. It forces the ant to relocate before killing it.
8. Ants Have Two Stomachs
Ants store food for themselves in one stomach and the other is used to carry food back to the colony.
9. Ants Are Almost Everywhere
Ants can be found on every continent except Antarctica.
10. Some Ants Are Acrobatic
Acrobat ants can raise their abdomen above their head when they’re excited or threatened.
