SCIENCE TALK Socio ecological Trade offs Between Household Wealth and Water Stress in Global Mining

Rising global demand for minerals to support ongoing economic development and the Green Transition is expanding extraction areas across the planet. In this talk, Professor Saleem ALI will focus on the nexus of mining activities, rural household wealth, and water scarcity, specifically examining 19 major minerals selected for their importance in the green energy transition or their overall extraction volumes across 27 countries in the Majority World: the Global South. He will combine georeferenced information on 1,373 large-scale mining locations with data from 63 household surveys (encompassing 1.32 million households) on wealth, using a mixed-effects modelling approach layered on a variety of economic, demographic, and environmental factors known to be associated with household wealth - to highlight inclusive policies which prioritize local benefits and environmental sustainability.
