Yesterday I turned 50. The past year has been a turning point in my life, when I started to realise that every episode of trauma, crisis, conflict, challenges and depression I've faced have bought me tremendous insight and understanding, although I didn't realise it at the time. Now I can see why these things occured and what advantage they have brought me now I no longer feel like a victim with self-pity. On the contrary now, every day I thank Divine Providence for bringing me these experiences and I see the knowledge I gained as a gift which can be turned into wisdom. So many times I felt like life was meaningless and too hard and almost gave up. My advice to anyone reading this going through bad times is to keep on going. Don't give up. Try to see the challenges and how you face them as lessons. Learn as much as you can about as many subjects as you can, especially spiritual wisdom and quantum physics. Watch and learn from nature. All the answers are there. Love and light H

I think people might consider the fact that trauma has a way of impacting your ability to learn, at least academically - to say nothing of an aversion of anyone associated with the word spiritual because of the kind of abuse mentioned so who you learn from becomes an issue as well, plenty of people probably will avoid anyone identified with spiritual and even ignore the ones they have no issue with. Learning from nature is another story of course, but it shouldn't be difficult to understand that ones cognition may be affected significantly so something like quantum physics is certainly an issue. Motivationally of course don't give up is self explanatory, however we really need more to get a feel for your exprience, it's probably the kind of thing a memoir could fully express.

Gabor may not feel that subtle energy, but he certainly radiates it. In our arguably disconnected and overly rationalistic culture, I consider his honesty, compassion, and humility to be far more valuable and easy to connect with, feel, and appreciate than I could with any spiritual abilities.

The bottom line with life is, that everything we do, say, experience etc..... there is something that's aware of it! This something that's aware of it can't be explained with words, it can only be realised. It's that still presence within that's always here from birth to death. It's timeless. That is the true self. We all know it, but it gets overlooked because of identification with thought, i.e.who we think we are, the conditioned mind and the body. This is ultimate truth, whether it's realised or not.

YES! Suffering isn't guaranteed to awaken but it provides the sharpest challenge to human beings, forcing the choice to awaken and grow or go down with pain. Those who have trauma, if they have reached even the same level in their development as your average person, trust me - they have travelled further to get there. If they are further beyond your average person in development, they have seen and heard things that bring humanity forward and which we need to hear

Also, I think that some spiritual seekers are looking in the wrong place for healing or trying to bypass trauma work in favor of the "higher" option. A good spiritual teacher should know when to recognize it and refer the seeker to someone who can do the work.

I really appreciate this comment. Focusing on the mind only, with no discussion of the body, seems to me like we are missing a big piece. I have known spiritual teachers to spiritually bypass their own trauma by not acknowledging it at all and then that leaves people who can’t control their mind, for example, feeling worse about themselves because they aren’t as good as their teacher. This just makes me appreciate Dr. Mate more. I do not think “enlightenment” is possible without processing our own traumas. We have to be able to hold the whole of our lives and not just focus on the “good”.

The giant and the apprentice... The one who knows, listens, the one who does not know, speaks. Gabor's quote from Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan speaks volumes: “-Charles. Oh, your voices, your voices. Why don't the voices come to me? I am king, not you! -Joan. They do come to you, but you do not hear them. You have not sat in the field in the evening listening for them. When the angelus rings, you cross yourself and have done with it. But if you prayed from your heart and listened to the thrilling of the bells in the air after they stopped ringing, you would hear the voices as well as I do.”

I agree with Gabor Mate about brining the subject of trauma into the spiritual domain. To acknowledge it at the very least. There are many of us living with trauma trying to practice meditation with devotion to the point of actually abusing ourselves. Trauma is on the blindspot of spiritual teachings which makes one dealing with trauma even more ashamed. I know that it needs to be addressed by other ways but it would be really helpful to support our practice by encouraging us perhaps a bit differently. Especially that people suffering from trauma are indeed very motivated in going beyond their personalities so there are a high number of us who are affected by the lack of empathy/understanding in the spiritual community. So thank you Gabor Mate for bringing this up. Finally someone did it.

Dr Gabor's sense of humor reminds me a lot of His Holiness the Dalai Lama's. It's SO delightful. Also--what bravery it took to ask Adyashanti so directly about the sexual abuse within the spiritual community. I've never heard someone ask those questions, but I have always wanted to know the answer. Thank you Dr Gabor. Your teachings might not look like all the other spiritual teachers', but they are grounded in so many of our lived experiences. You can find enlightenment in the cosmos, for sure, but you can find it in the soil beneath your feet, too. Köszönöm!

Finally these two topics being explored together. Spirituality and trauma. Sometimes severe trauma places us in disembodied spiritual state. Living a real life, day to day, along with an embodied integrative practice to me holds the potential of unification between spirit 'I am', and matter (movement, emotions, life). There is a place where trauma and spirituality meet... I call it embodiment.

He reminds me a bit of my husband who gets triggered by words like spirit and doesn’t feel ‘energy’ in the way that I do. In this piece, I see the little boy in Gabor and can see his frustration that he doesn’t feel what Adyashanti feels. In another interview I watched it was said that deep honesty is more important than enlightenment. I appreciate Gabor’s deep honesty. Thank you Gabor for putting yourself out there. Meditation and watching my mind has never worked for me on a deeper level. But by listening to Dt Maté, I now understand the reasons for my lifelong depression, feelings of loneliness, fears and anxieties, and have been able to heal by allowing myself to re-connect to my instincts and the emotions that go back to my childhood. Thank you for your work, Dr Maté! It has changed my life! “Being honest with yourself “ is not easy because, as Dr Maté says, we learned from a very early age, to suppress those emotions and parts of ourselves that were too painful to experience as vulnerable children just wanting to attach to those who were caring for us.

I was so thrilled and suprised when I came across this meeting of two very interesting minds from entirely different backgrounds, because I have been listening to Adyashanti for at least the past ten years (probably more); and I have only comparatively recently discovered the amazing work and dynamic ideas of Dr. Gabor Mate. To see them both together was a sudden very powerful integration of two different paths for me that gives me a lot of hope and conviction that I must be doing something right! It's a wonderful example of how human beings from such different walks of life can come together in friendship and mutual respect, and this is the message for me, that yes, we can! We humans can meet and talk and agree or disagree but in a powerfully mutual and respectful way. If only our political leaders could understand this concept--that winning over another really isn't the most advanced way for us humans to learn to interact, but instead, to share and enjoy the resources of this wonderful gift of life!

Very much enjoyed the exchange between both of you! Beautiful, we need to integrate all of it, human and higher self, it’s an ongoing process instead of pretending we get to some spiritual pinnacle and then don’t have to experience or process, help, heal, celebrate accomplishments from human self, not just acknowledge and celebrate higher self manifestation and alignment. 😊❤️

Great conversations between the two of you. Brand new way of thinking about silence. However I decided to dive into my negativity to work myself through it. Intuitively I knew I needed help and I got help the other modalities of all the traffic residence and emotional body code. Four years later and still committed to my healing, I find myself feeling absolutely wonderful. I can describe this as a crossing the Wide wide open ocean with my support system nearby me whenever I needed it. My commitment and my support has made me a brand new person. One that I absolutely love… Myself!

Thanks to both of you. As I listened, I was reminded of the Work of Byron Katie...and the contribution she has made to self awareness through her meditative process Ask Four Questios and Turn It Around.....in the early days of her sharing this way of questioning of our thoughts , she introduced it as providing a path to ...stopping the nightmarem waje tge baby, the end of war....like Adya said...the hardest thing seems to be to be honest with ourselves....as one of the 'tools' in my ongoing journey, it is a fierce yet available practice.... This was a great Easter Sunday listening over a cuppa ..thanks again.

Every human being on this earth has experienced a trauma. It might have been small ones, or big ones but we all have felt them anyway. And we did not dissolve them, we just hardened oureselfs against it, creating the 'me' as the good fantasy. Seeing this 'me' actually, means; feeling the hurt once felt, and then Love steps in to solve it. thanks for sharing the video! :-)

Thomas Pieters agreed! And I think we hang on to the false ‘me’ out of fear that if we relinquish it, we would be obliterated, but it seems like answer is to surrender it and feel the true pain and allow love to dissolve it.

@@annalavotha6292 , compassionate thought of you👍, but there seems to be something 'extra' in this fact of Life.. Beeing bourne needs to be a tremendous change, both as the pain for the mother, the cold-snap for the child and the forceful experiance of the father. Life, not yours or mine, but The Life..does not bring a trauma with it. If it feels like this, then Life emediatly repears it, as the father might land back on its feet, the mother 'forgets' the phisical pain and the child ( without memory jet..) reacts on the warmth of the mothers imbrace, beeing only in the Now.:-) The Life, if you would ask me that is, to me has the same origin as The Love. In whitch faults do not exsist. The trauma comes later for the little human being, when thought and 'time' comes in, as result of memory. Without thoughts taking over in the realm of psyche, there is no pain or trauma at all. Thought should not be there, it is not it's function. Your senses are enough, no need for the storytelling thought, which is never Truth. Wouldn't that be..'timeless', when The Love steps in without ever asking it? Enjoy the Life, which you ARE :-)

The comment of Dr. Mate is "this" (more enlightened) and Adyashanti is "that" (not enlightened) is testament to the viewers needs to feel "correct" in their beliefs. When he talks about his experience of “grace”, yes, we will ALL find grace when we come to the very end of ourselves and our own resources, intellectually and emotionally and are willing to totally surrender to God. We cannot experience this without recognizing that we actually need God - something greater than ourselves and humbly coming to Him. We will find Him, when we seek for Him with our whole heart.

There is a lot of very precious silliness going on here. How on earth do these people manage to help people with trauma ? I for one am very skeptical about how they are communicating. If this is the state of the art of spiritual practice in the US then I am concerned. Oh sorry I forgot. I haven`t paid for and read enough of their books yet. Silly me. Just give me time to study these two great masters and I will be enlightened very soon. So excited. Soon I will know how to love.

Gabor Mate (on the left asking the questions) has helped many to heal trauma. Other guy (on the right talking in circles & contradicting himself) displays many signs of narcissistic personality disorder, not sure how much you can help others when you're still so wounded yourself, maybe you can. But he & people like him are of no help to me at this point.
