I feel sad for you though. As I watched your other videos, you have truly made an attempt to debunk the pseudoscience in India. And you have actually taken a nonaggressive and humble approach to do so, unlike the other science speakers such as Richard Dawkins who do not show a glimpse of empathy in shredding it into pieces. Unfortunately, given the political climate in India, people mistook you for someone who they think is attacking their heritage. And I think that is why you had to make this video to explain our true heritage to us. We Indians want to feel good about our background and culture, but in that hurry, we blind ourselves to anyone who might be exploiting that particular weakness itself. I have a message for Indians who are reading this: Don't ever underestimate the Indian contribution to science. It is easy to do so when the science news and awards are dominated by European scientists. You should be reading about Indian scientists not just to feel proud as an Indian, but to be grateful for their efforts in bringing that pride to you.

You know you contradicted yourself in second para. Its like: be proud of your culture and contributions but ONLY THE WAY I WANT. Indians be it you or me likes our ego to be pampered. This is the result of years of slavery under Islamic and British rule. You tend to seek some sort of validation. Their a subtle inferiority complex among us. Ex: Covaxin was mocked by us Indians and we wanted covishield. And Covaxin was mocked not by illiterate but the intelligentsia of India. When our best brains acts like mental slaves, your expectation of few not having and aggressive outburst is ignorance. The political climate of india in past encouraged the mockery of Indian heritage and the political climate now is just opposite. We never had a sane middle path.

I took a small course about the history of mathematics in India in college. Indian acharyas developed binary number system to study combinations in music and poetry (Laghu and Guru instead of 1 and 0) moreover, permutations and combinations were computed as means of developing medicinal mixtures from natural ingredients. Trigonometry was used in design and construction of hawan-kunds, and temples. I was really surprised to see how many things like series for irrational numbers(pi, e), faster-converging series, areas, binary numbers, square roots, cube roots, permutations and combinations, trigonometry, limits were developed in India independently from the published works of famous european mathematicians (most of these were studied earlier by Indians, while some of these were researched in europe earlier. ) What is taught in schools as 'indo-arabic' number system is purely Indian but accepted and used by arabic scholars. It is truly disappointing how little we know about the culture of science and mathematics in pre-colonial India. (another fact is that scholars from even 5th-6th century sometimes did not mention proofs and rote learning was practiced in India since the vedic times )

9:36 I have issue with the wording you used. "He has a remarkable understanding of how it was not things in sky that was in motion but the earth that was in motion". It gives off a misconstrued notion that Aryabhatta knew about heliocentric theory long before Copernicus, which is not true. If you read aryabhatia, you can immediately see that's not the case. He still followed the geocentric theory of cycles and epicycles, which was the standard at those times. But where his theory differed from conventional geocentricism is that the earth rotates (not revolves but rotates). That itself was pretty revolutionary for its times. To conclude, Aryabhatta was proponent of rotating earth geocentricism, not heliocentricism.

The story of how jya became sine was interesting. I knew there was some link but the fact that it was due to jaib translated as sinus was something quite interesting. I wanted to share one other point. I study jyotish i.e. Astrology as per Hindu traditions. Now it's quite implicit in our studies that Moon reflects the light of Sun. I can't really quote a shloka, I will try to find a reference though. The concept in jyotish is that Sun represents the soul, Atman, hence the consciousness while Moon represents mind, Manas. Mind doesn't have its own light. Light is only in the Atman and that is reflected by Moon. So this is quite implicitly understood. Also one area which most modern Indians don't research into are our Puranas. They are an encyclopaedia of knowledge. I have read Maths in Narada Purana. Now the historians, who I believe always like to date our scriptures later than what it must have been date the principal 18 Puranas to the early centuries CE. The oldest Puranas were supposed to have been composed in BCE. I haven't seen your videos debunking Vedic maths. But if the question is - are the ideas from Vedas themselves. You got to understand that in our traditions the Puranas are basically supposed to explain the philosophies in the Vedas through examples so that the common man can understand. So the Puranas are an extension of Vedas. The other two encyclopaediacal Puranas are the Agni Purana and Garuda Purana. The time scales like that of Yuga, Manvantara are given in many Puranas.

The Argumentative Indian by Nobel prize winning economist Amartya Sen wonderfully describes the intellectual tradition of India, including the works of Aryabhatta, Brahmagupta and also many other philosophers. The idea that the West is logical and the East only reliigious is not true, Indians and Chinese have a long tradition of debate and argumentation, the different schools of Hindu philosophy have very rigorous systems of their own. Unfortunately questioning and debating is considered a "dilution of our traditions" today.... But this has been true in all cultures throughout time ig, Sen also describes how Aryabhatta was chastised for his methods, but he fearlessly openly used and promoted them. But Brahmagupta was more cautious and hid his real methods in many cases, just like Copernicus, Galileo etc faced chastisement. Lovely book

Actually, many of his discoveries were also made by mathematicians such as Aristarchus. I guess it isn't fair to claim he was a genius because he discovered stuff no one did. But he was a genius because he rediscovered many of these with his own novelty. However, there was definitely a knowledge transfer that happened between Indians and Greeks, and much of that might have been compiled by him. I guess we should take everything ancient with Stigler's law of eponymy, but he indeed did a great service to Mathematics in India.

No intellectual tradition in the world is isolated from the rest. We made our own work, but we also took a lot from the West, modified it, improved it and also made our own inventions and discoveries. The translation of Sanskrit, Greek and Latin texts into Arabic and Persian led to the Golden Age of Islam, where they improved on our work and also added their own discoveries. All of this was finally translated back into Latin were they again made innovations and their own discoveries, during the Renaissance. I think a fault in our hiistory education is that we talk about kings and queens and wars. If we instead teach kids about how ideas developed across the world, we would realise that the various civilisations are not rivals who plunder and fight and steal (those things are primarily done by kings and queens, not ordinary people) but that we are all co-existing with each other's help and building on each others' work. The Argumentative Indian by Amartya Sen wonderfully describes this dynamic, particularly the comradery between Indian and Arab mathematicians, scientists and philosophers in the middle ages

B. L. van der Waerden is the person who suggested an underlying heliocentric model for Aryabhata’s calculations, but this has been rebutted. One of such articles is Review: A Lost Monument of Indian Astronomy by N. Swerdlow, which is also cited in the Wikipedia article. Swerdlow goes into detail questioning both the astronomical basis for van der Waerden’s claims but also his historical accounts. Considering the fact that Indian astronomers who came later and cited Aryabhata directly make no mention of a heliocentric system either, the reasonable conclusion is that Aryabhata had a geocentric model with the one important difference that he included the rotation of earth.

India has had some of the oldest and a very long Materialist and scientific tradition which was very deliberately wiped out by the orthodox and idealist schools of thought. Look up the work by Debiprasad Chattopadhyay on ancient and medieval materialist traditions from India.

These things really helps u to understand the subject (math). Can u prepare a course(brief or whatever u like) on historical systems(like one u have described of Aryabhatt) of mathematics. Bcz that can really help u to admire our current mathematical system and in understanding "what mathematics is" (like ur video on what science is gives lots of insight on how we get true information/conclusions from observation) . I m not forcing u bt just expressing my wish 👍 N sry for mudering the English 😂😂 Love ur work❤️👍

science and religion must be separate. Modi ji said Indians practiced plastic surgery because Ganesha's head was replaced. I would rather say that Susruta invented surgery, his book is the earliest discussing in detail. This is the differnce between a proud Indian rationalist and a bhakt
@diehardernxgt21619 ай бұрын
The problem is, ganesh is mote popular than susruta, so politicians will mention the dieties/people that are more popular.

China has high influence of India's ancient Buddhist traditions. Still they give credit to India for Bodhi dharma. Whatever they got from India, they clearly give credit. That's the greatness of China. While Arabs who had learned somethings from India never gave credit.

What did they learn from India?.Arab or middle East is far more older than India . Sumerian Persians etc were the people who influenced indian culture and traditions as the people first migrating to India were from these locations .so if anything middle East influenced India more than vice versa.
@onlyhumanity6148 Жыл бұрын
@@Xenor999 Talk with the facts. The Indian temples are more than 1000 years older which are still the marvels of architect. The universities like Nalanda, Vikramsila, Takshhasila used to be in India. While if you look at arab, they dont had so much profound things. The only invention of Arab is Islam which is the cause of trouble and wars in many countries. Buddha, mahabir,kabir are the gems of India whose impact on the overall world is very high. The numerical system Hindu-Arabic system was also invented in India.concept of infinity and zero was also prevailed in India since ancient times. Probably you may be Indian or Pakistanis. But having biassed feelings towards Arab is surprising. You follow the religion of Arab, that doesnt mean they were your ancestors and you have right to take credits of Arab.
