Newer Mama Bug Video: • Make a Mama Bug Giant ...
Companion web page: bit.ly/2vS48cj
We are now using lighter, higher performance foam which gives even more efficient flight. There is no longer a need to use thicker foam for the Mama Bug.

I use 4o gauge nichrome, the thinnest available. Most people use at lease 30. 40 tangles and breaks, but it does not melt a wide kerf (gap). The less foam melted and stuck to the side of the sheet, the lighter the glider will be.

My grandsons loved making and using these gliders! Thank you for posting this video. We've looked for the advanced Mama Bug pattern that uses the curved camber shown towards the end of this video, but can't find it anywhere on your site. Can you tell us where to find it? The video and video description didn't have any linked text files on which to click. Thank you for helping us find it.

+Wayne Schmidt Thanks for the feedback, Wayne. And I just subscribed to your amazing channel. From gold-panning to cloud chambers, such cool eclectic projects! Making curved cambers was too confusing for beginners. They bent far too much, creating frustrating un-flyable gliders. I found experimentally that one simple bend as camber flew almost as well and it was far easier for beginners. They only had to set the angle. Here is a link to an old video that uses rolling the camber in with a pen: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIO6loaHgdNqiZY The pattern is linked in the description.

+sciencetoymaker Thank you! Using the hot wire cutter on your site, I finally managed to cut some 0.65mm sheets of foam. You were right, going that thin has a big impact on flight speed. I used the foam blocks sold by Michael's craft stores and even though at 14 KG per cubic meter it worked quite well. The planes glide so slowly it's almost like magic, but I still haven't gotten the knack of using a board to keep them up. Again, thanks for the response.
@sciencetoymaker
@sciencetoymaker 8 жыл бұрын
+Wayne Schmidt Yes, while it's easy to show someone how to fly--walking beside them and mutually holding the board so they get the feel--it's harder when you're the first in your region. It should be level with the top of the board, close to blowing over the top. If you make a video of flying eventually, I'll embed it on this page www.sciencetoymaker.org/airSurfKit/WalkalongFlightGallery.htm

@sciencetoymaker
@sciencetoymaker 8 жыл бұрын
+gavin goproactionvideos Not a string; a wire for weight. All "flying wing" (having no tail section) type of gliders require a front weight to prevent stalling. They also require up flaps in back (called "elevons") to prevent diving. When properly adjusted, the front weight and back elevons give a good glide. We use the tailless design because you have to balance the glider on a upward wave of air (that board diverts air up). With a tail, the updraft tends to lift the tail more, causing diving. Dr. David Aronstein has created some walkalong glider designs that do have tails, though.

+gavin goproactionvideos It is understandable. There are a plenty of hoaxes on the internet. I also think that it is a compliment when people can't believe it is real. It does look like magic! Paper is heavier than foam, harder to launch and fly. But if you want to try walkalong gliding with just paper, I have a new video with a simple spinning design (you can also send them up in helicopters). kzbin.info/www/bejne/l52cdoWqZrWcfLs Try it and show your friends how science can look like magic!

First, make sure the vertical stabilizers are really vertical--folded all the way up. Then experiment with where the glider is in relation to the board. Is it on the edge as you push the glider into a turn? Is it in the the middle? And don't expect a big glider like this to made a very sharp turn such as you can do with the Jagwing. but it will turn. If that doesn't work, try making a video so I can see what's going on. Slater

Greetings from Pennsylvania, Mr. Aditor. I have also tried to make gliders with aluminum foil, but I was not able to get the aluminum gliders to fly. "Styrofoam" (स्टायरोफोम ), the white kind made from little beads (spheres) works best for fixed-wing walkalong gliders. It is cut to about 0.6mm thick sheets with hot wire cutting. You can find out more about hot wire cutting foam here. sciencetoymaker.org/walkalong-glider-airsurf-air-surfing/make-your-own-gliders/hotwire-cut/ There are also some spinning walkalong gliders that you can make from thin paper, which is easier to get. sciencetoymaker.org/walkalong-glider-airsurf-air-surfing/make-your-own-gliders/paper-gliders/ Best wishes, Slater

It is flying too fast... How to slow down its speed?
@sciencetoymaker
@sciencetoymaker 3 жыл бұрын
If the glider flies too fast, then there is too much weight. It might be the front weight, or the whole glider. You can check the front weight by snipping off little bits until the glider stalls, then add some tape until it no longer stalls. It that is not the problem, then the foam for the wings might be too thick, and therefore too heavy. If you make a KZbin video of it gliding, then it would be easier to diagnose what is happening.

bat man The weight can be anything: copper or steel wire, or even paper. I prefer wire because by bending it forward or backward, you can change the balance point (center of gravity) of the glider very easily. That is easier than adding or cutting off weight.
